Fun fact. It is actually explained what Skarbrand does in the badlands in the Thanquol’s Doom novel. In short, Thanquol was tricked by a long dead greyseer into summoning Skarbrand when assaulting a dwarf hold with Queek Headtaker. That’s why Queek is also close to him Btw. Better insult for a dwarf is a dorf. They go feral after hearing that

that instance works perfectly as a major show of 3 things 1: Thanquol's double-edged luck, on the one hand he completely failed because he summoned Skarbrand, on the other hand he managed to survive being in the same room as Skarbrand. 2: Queek's utter stupidity, somehow Queek mistook Skarbrand for the Verminlord Thanquol had intended to summon. and most notably 3: Thanquol's raw power. normally to summon a Greater Daemon you need tons of sacrifices, it's really hard to do without dying by accident too, Thanquol managed to do it without even a single sacrifice and didn't seem to suffer any negative effects. also, it was an odd moment of Skarbrand being relatively chill... I mean he did slaughter both armies, Skaven and Dwarfs alike, but as he was finally being banished by a Dwarf Master Engineer (whom Thanquol promptly vaporized with Warp Lightning) Skarbrand whispered to Thanquol saying that he'd be waiting for the day that the Skaven next needed his aid (which seems very odd, since Khorne hates spellcasters and all 4 major Chaos Gods hate the Horned Rat and Skaven, so it seems very unusual for a Greater Daemon of Khorne to offer aid to a Skaven sorcerer).

@@ShadowWolfRising there are some Skaven among the various clans that follow Clan Pestilens (the clan that focuses on plagues. the clans that follow them are called the Pestilent Brotherhood) that do secretly worship Nurgle (who they called "the Horned God") instead of the Horned Rat. however many, including the leadership of Clan Pestilens itself, consider this to be absolute heresy. so any Skaven found to worship Nurgle tend to turn up dead. due to the common interest in spreading disease and plagues followers of Nurgle will sometimes ally themselves with Skaven of the Pestilent Brotherhood (and by Chaos standards, and especially by Skaven standards, these alliances are actually relatively sturdy), the Pestilent Brotherhood only have an issue with Nurgle worship when it's actual Skaven worshiping him. allegiances between Nurgle followers and other groups of Skaven are about as shaky as any other Skaven alliance. Nurgle himself hates the Skaven though. the Horned Rat is basically a squatter in Nurgle's domain, and while Nurgle is defined by adoration of all life and the natural cycle of things the Skaven are defined by their hatred of everything that isn't a Skaven (and they hate other Skaven too). to Nurgle plagues are things to be spread because you love the pathogens and the development of new forms of life and many interesting and beautiful symptoms and the rot and sprouting of new life that comes in the wake of that death. the pain and suffering is just a side effect. Nurgle is life, death, and decay which sprouts into new life in an endless stagnant cycle. things that break this cycle like immortality, undeath, change, and barren lifeless wastes are anathema to him. to Skaven (even those that worship Nurgle) plagues are a weapon designed to cause pain and death, they experiment only to refine these weapons. the beauty is not in the disease but in the suffering it causes (which frankly feels like it'd align more with Slaanesh than Nurgle) and their plagues are often so deadly that the bodies can't even rot properly (and even if they could the Skaven would just eat the bodies before any new life could sprout from them) just leaving barren lifeless wasteland in their wake. no cycles, no new forms of life (the only life that comes out of a Skaven infestation is more Skaven, and if the Skaven were successful even that would eventually come to an end due to just how unsustainable and self-destructive they are), only ruin.

Skarbrand actually has a bit of a record of being surprisingly chill with sorcerers for a Khornate Daemon (which is especially surprising given Skarbrand's reputation of just hating absolutely everything). actually... just in general Skarbrand seems relatively chill with things that Khorne hates. a particular instance comes to mind where Thanquol accidentally summoned Skarbrand instead of a Verminlord to fight an army of Dwarfs, and after taking out both armies the last thing Skarbrand did before returning to the Chaos Realms was whisper to Thanquol, a Skaven (so hated by the 4 major Chaos Gods) sorcerer (so hated by Khorne), that if the Skaven ever needed his aid again he'd be waiting. then, of course looking to Total War and the Advisor, instead of just jumping up and killing the obvious Tzeentch sorcerer immediately Skarbrand just sits there and keeps sharpening his axes until the Advisor says something that he takes note of (though there is the implication that if Skarbrand had finished his axe sharpening session before the Advisor had piqued his interest then he would've started the whole murder thing). in general I think somewhere along the line Skarbrand basically ended up with opposing views to Khorne, maybe because of Tzeentch's manipulations prior to Skarbrand's betrayal. Khorne prefers Skarbrand's current state while Skarbrand hates it. Khorne hates magic and sorcerers while Skarbrand tolerates them (that's really the closest Skarbrand seems to get to liking something). Khorne hates Skaven while Skarbrand offers them aid (though he does still slaughter their armies). or maybe being banished by Khorne (and seeming to believe that Khorne hates him) just left him with an affinity for other things he believes that Khorne hates.

Playing Skarbrand is basically THE Khornate fantasy. BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD! Khorne isn’t complicated, but his aesthetic is sick and his style is satisfying and that’s enough to put him as my favourite. Also yes they’re easy to manipulate but by the same token they’re hard to control. If whatever you threw them at doesn’t bring them down, you better hope they aren’t coming for you next.

Skarbrand campaign is just brain off and murder. Is it alive? Kill it. Are you not at war? You should be. Battle Time. Move forward and grind through 4 stacks of greenskins with just one stack with skarbrand. The highest I have gotten was 500 kills on a stack of exalted blood letters.

it is a pretty neat reference to that story also, if you end up allying with Queek (pretty easy since you have all the same enemies) you can fulfill the promise Skarbrand made to Thanquol at the end of that incident where he basically said that he'd be waiting for the Skaven to call him again during their time of need. it's honestly quite weird seeing Skarbrand act so chill towards a Skaven sorcerer, something that any regular Khornate Daemon should absolutely hate with every fiber of their being twice over. I mean... he had just also slaughtered the Skaven army (so from that I'd assume that any help he gives during the Skaven time of need certainly won't come without collateral damage... though of all races I think the Skaven are probably the one that would be most willing to send thousands (or even millions) of their own troops to their deaths just for the sake of having something as powerful as Skarbrand on their side), but he killed the Dwarf army too so that made things even.

Skarbrand design is really outstanding. In Warhammer 3 there is plenty of factions which is OP but they get boring extremely fast. For some reason I spend hundreds of hours playing only Khorne because I was interested in different strats and development. Also trying to figure out the fastest short victory campaign in the fewer turns as possible and making infinite move by calculating your position and etc.
