As a Southern-raised country boy, I can confirm the correct remedies here! Bee sting? Make a paste of meat tenderizer and water and pack it on the site of the sting. Stepped on glass? Soak it in some Epsom salts. Acne? Cut back on the grease and leave it alone. Hiccups? BOO! Getting scared is the best surefire remedy! Teething baby? Yup, Jack on a finger.

What's the best way to scare hiccups away: hearing a speech by Michael Robinson - er Michelle Obama, talking bad about the Crimson Tide, or mixing beans in your chili?
@jenx5870
@jenx5870 Жыл бұрын
Yes, but the RN in me now says no. The true treatment for a bee sting is: apply a cold compress, then you may apply hydrocortisone cream or calamine lotion if you're not allergic. Cut on the foot: clean with soap and water, then apply triple antibiotic ointment if not allergic, and a bandaid. If the edges of the wound don't meet, or the wound is deep, you need stitches. Hiccups: plug your ears then take ten gulps of water without taking a breath, or distract yourself by attempting to get your pointer fingernails to meet perfectly for 30 seconds (or by doing something else).

Whiskey! 1. Got a sore throat, put a teaspoon of whisky in your hot tea. 2. Got a very sore throat? Dab some whiskey on a handkerchief, put it on your throat. Wrap with a wool sock. Secure with safety pins Put on two pairs pajamas, go under two layers of quilts, sweat it out! 3. Got greasy hair? Or dandruff? Wash your hair, follow with a whiskey rinse. In a cup of warm water with a teaspoon of even a tablespoon of whiskey. 4. Go smelly feet? Soak them in a basin of warm water, with a tablespoon of whiskey. 5. Got a mosquito bite? Dab with a handkerchief with some whiskey. 6. Clothes smell like cigarettes or some place that had lingering odors? Fill a spray bottle with water with a tablespoon of whiskey. Spray on clothes til damp. Good for remove body odors too. 7. Got tooth pain? Make a clove spice tea, add some whiskey. Soak a handkerchief in it. Chew on that clove and whiskey handkerchief. 8. Almost out of your favorite cologne? Pour some whiskey in the bottle. Shake it up. It's a little weak, but it will do. Got any other household dilemma or ailments? 😳 Learn to identify jewelweed. If you boil it up it will work. Put your plants in a saucepan and just cover with water; reduce the water by half; pour off the liquid and use it (the liquid. You can throw the weeds away.) It doesn't keep unless you freeze it, but you can freeze it in cubes and thaw it out a little at a time as you need it. It also works to kill fungus. If you're growing plants from seed, add it to your plant water and it will keep your plants from damping off. I never tried it on people fungus, but idk why it wouldn't work. I got this one from Euell Gibbons.

My mother grew up in the Oklahoma Dust Bowl during the Great Depression. She had 12 siblings. Just like Ma and Pa Kettle. They were literally dirt poor and had to make do. She had inexpensive "cures" for everything. As children if i or my brothers had a cough, she would give us a heaping tablespoon of, you guessed it; Vicks Vaporub, it says POISON on the label and also says DO NOT INGEST! She was undeterred! If we had a persistent cough, she would fill a whiskey jigger with kerosene from one of our 100 year old hurricane lamps. The kerosene was probably a 100 years old too! She would have us take it like a shot of whiskey! Kerosene is jet fuel! For a bad cut, she would pour salt on it until it stopped! Unbelievably painful. Lots of other scary "cures". I went to the doctor twice as a kid. I never went to a dentist either and neither did my 4 brothers;, "dentists are for rich people!"

My dad was born in Oklahoma during the Dust Bowl, just before they left for California. I didn't suffer from any of those "cures", but my parents did use Vicks for just about everything. My husband still puts salt on wounds, particularly mouth sores, and my dad always had me use alum for mouth sores (canker sores).

We used to live near Sulfur Wells Park in southern Ky. (We actually lived in Metcalf County about five miles from the nearest community called "Chicken Brussels.") The sulfur water tasted like rotten boiled eggs to me, but people filled jugs of the water from the free water fountain. The park had a "swinging bridge" across the rock-bottom springs. There was also a roller skating rink. This was the 50s.

My Texas grandfather chewed tobacco and I've gotten the 'spit on the wasp sting' treatment. It mostly made me decide to tough it out if I got stung again. He had a cough remedy that was a spoonful of sugar with a drop of kerosene (only a small drop, luckily). Not a medical remedy, but he kept a cloth bag of powdered sulfur on the porch. You were supposed to dust your shoes with it so you didn't get chiggers.

If you use the chewing tobacco, make sure to get loose leaf. Moisten it in your mouth or even just wet it, then take an individual leaf and use like a bandage. Unfortunately, like chewing it, using it as a bandage can cause cancer over time just takes longer. Maybe you'll beat it to the grave.
