Always felt like i get in my own way. Like my soul wants to burst forward in uninhibited improvisation, but the ego stands and judges and rates the output every few seconds and i stumble, fall off the tightrope, til i'm too bruised to carry on. But i tell you, the times where the expression really take flight, are infinitely worth it. So i'm still exploring this dynamic in the trust that there's freedom to be discovered

I love this presenter because it reminds me that whatever I learned, that I have to play from the heart. I hope that whatever I play that I'm guided in a spiritual manner. I think it's important to be spiritually inspired and that can mean a lot of different things for a lot of different people. Many of the greats, including Keith Richards has said, his inspiration comes from a higher power. He said, think of an antenna on your head where you receive inspiration and then you transmit it out. Receive and transmit. 🙏🕊️❤️

Thanks for sharing. I’m very much in the place of wrestling with my mind. To stay within myself is exactly what I needed to hear.

I bought that book back in 2001, read it loved it, internalized it and then at some point forgot all about it‘s existence. I had a mild shock seeing the book cover in your thumbnail. I don‘t understand how I could forget about a book that so completely changed my outlook on life!

These videos are fantastic, first the ego and music one and now this. I don't often leave comments on KZbin, but your videos have really struck a chord (no pun intended) with me. Well done.

Thank Michael for reminding the role of ego in playing. I had a listen to a couple of slow music pieces you wrote and uploaded , i enjoyed listening. Do you tutor adults , especially for someone who has been unable to learn for a long time ?

One of the best books about playing music ever written imo. “The Music Lesson” by Victor Wooten Is right up there with Kenny Werner’s “Effortless Mastery” Thanks for sharing man! This is something that needs to be addressed more. ESPECIALLY in the younger years of a given musician’s path.

Hello, thank you for this recommandation, you may find yourself interested in the idea of Wu Wei from taoist philosophy at some point if you don't have already. Effortless effort, non-doing, doing what comes natural, from Lao tseu "He who stands on tiptoe doesn't stand firm. He who rushes ahead doesn't go far. He who tries to shine dims his own light. He who defines himself can't know who he really is. He who has power over others can't empower himself. He who clings to his work will create nothing that endures."

Yes! True victory is to know oneself. One cannot know oneself when one is always reactive.

Great video because it's such a relevant topic. And not for music alone.

Hi Michael !! I agree with you. I've been reading it for a few days and I can say that it is a wonderful book, because it contains good advice for musicians and combines it with meditations. Which is great for working on excessive Ego. Greetings 🙋♂

I have this book. I didn't get far in reading it. I'd say the time wasn't right - then. But now - it is. Thank you for your timely reminder, it is very helpful and much appreciated. Bests - Jason
