If you can’t grapple you don’t know how to fight - sad this still needs to be said in 2022

No matter how good you think your striking is, if you don’t know how to grapple, you don’t know how to fight. A mediocre grappler can absolutely squash a high level striker who doesn’t know how to grapple. Why limit yourself?

Hey Ramsey, if you were rolling with a six limbed creature like Goro from Mortal Kombat how would guard passing work? Would his second pair of arms work like a second pair of legs? Would you have to pass guard twice to get to full mount? Thanks.

There’s a reason Goro was champion of Mortal Kombat for hundreds of years. Even a normal sized guy with two sets of functional arms like that would be a huge problem in all facets of fighting. In grappling, you’re best bet would be to avoid the front of the body at all costs, and attack the back. Passing the closed guard would require Goro to make stupid mistakes. Passing a butterfly guard, knee shield type of guard, other open guard on the ground- same. Rubber guard with 4 arms? Forget about it. Shoulder pin guard? You’re basically dead already. Passing guard from standing- now you have a chance. But once you get to side control or mount, Goro could do silly stuff with those extra arms you’d never trained for to reverse position or even strangle you while you’re on top. Man, Shokan BJJ would be so interesting if those guys were real.

And only then when you know grappling your striking can become effective (because then you could learn better takedown defense to avoid grappling) hence why this video tells us that we must know grappling to fight. yes literally. if your takedown defense is ass you have exactly one opportunity with each exchange to drop your opponent or else he will more likely than not clinch or shoot for takedown and you will either get subbed, tko'd or lose the rounds by points. and knowing that obviously makes the striker way way more insecure in going all out and being aggressive. grappling kinda is a one way ticket to downtown if you dont know atleast how to grapple defensively. its so weird that superb grappling sometimes even compensates someones lack of striking. ben askren for example is probably as good of a striker as your average fitness boxer and yet managed to go 19/2 as a professional fighter. khabib went 29/0 and if you watch his early fights his striking especially also wasnt really refined. in my opinion a basic grasp of grappling really is simply necessary for you to deploy any other techniques without hesitation or fear in your mind which ultimately means you can play more into your strenghts (i.e your superior striking). john danaher for example talks about this concept in the sphere of grappling itself also. he encourages his students heavily to be efficent at escaping bad positions with relative ease because it gives you the confidence to be way more agressive in your offensive attacks because you simply know its not the end of the world if you miss the armbar and somehow and up in sidecontrol or whatever because you can always recover.

But in any case, a trained grappler is not going to give you the time or the physical space to gouge their eyes out or hit them in the balls. If you've ever grappled a high level BJJ guy you'd know it's like wrestling a boa constricter. All of their holds are tight, and you get very little room to move if you don't know how to navigate those positions..also, the trained grappler can use those "street" techniques too. Wrestling knowledge is just the knowledge of how to physically manipulate another persons body, which is needed in the clinch of any sport and will improve anyone.

Of all the sports I competed in, wrestling was the one I was more "natural" at as a competitor. I was not a wrestler in high school but tried out for the collegiate wrestling team at BCC. ( I was the MVP of my High School Football and Basketball teams) They said, "No one starts a sport at the collegiate level". But, after tryouts, I got a full scholarship and in my second year, placed 4th in the State of Florida at 177lbs/ I only quit wrestling because I began my career as a Pro Kickboxer. I learned this about 13 years ago after i got my 2nd degree blackbelt in Okinawa Kenpo. One of my senior students went out and started training with a grappler. We had a chance to sparr about 6 months later and i started noticing that i was having a much harder time throwing or controlling him like i had previously. We ended up on the ground where i thought i had some intuition to protect myself and got humbled. That kind of hurt my pride for a while. I ended up getting some grappling lessons as well as training in a few other styles that i was very happy to learn. A small amount of Muy Thai while i was in Thailand, as well as some BJJ here and there. I have to say that my world opened up a lot more in self-defense and skills once i did that. Having a broad utility belt in the martial arts world these days goes a long way. But i am still a firm believer that if you practice and internalize only a couple things really well....it will take you much farther than doing a ton of things just sort of well.

As a striker I can firmly say I love kicking, using knees, elbows and punching and I also enjoy submissions which are so easy but before I even knew 1 submission I challenged a wrestler and getting takendown is an experience and getting pinned down is also an experience, that every striker should know how it feels in order to know what the threat is, how it's done, set up and most importantly how to counter. Even great fighters like wonderboy and Israel amazing strikers in MMA still had to learn how to grapple. At the end of the day go to BJJ class and go to striking class so you know how to strike and keep that fight standing and finish on the ground or on your feet the more options the better.

lol no. yeah grappling is good and if the fight goes to the ground you will definitely win if you know grappling but when you're still standing there is a very big risk of the grappler getting knocked out/down. I do Muay Thai and Boxing and have only done one grappling session at the MMA gym so far where we did the basics such as sprawling, guillotine setups, etc. but the only time I've been taken down in sparring is when the rules have been changed to favor the grappler. did this sparring session where the rules was no strikes to the face, no hitting too hard, and no timer so the round just goes until there is a submission. with those rules I ended up tapping loads of times. but when the rules aren't changed I don't really get taken down. we don't spar in the ring/cage we just spar on the mats so plenty of room to land a nice jab and step back and circle off. I once kept smacking this guy with some nice Jabs and the occasional Cross then when he went for my legs I took a big fast step backwards and circled off and kept doing that and he got fed up of getting smacked and failing to get the takedown and started chasing me around the mats trying to get my legs and I kept backing up and basically running backwards around the room at one point lol. so I guess what I'm saying is if grapplers don't change the rules it ain't as easy as the Gracies make it look lol. saying an average-level grappler could beat a talented striker made me lose brain cells no offense. my opinion is learn to strike and get very skilled at it but know some basic grappling just encase you end up on the ground so you at least you can do something down there without being helpless but prioritize striking. but I guess not everyone is the same. some people want to be amazing grapplers and only want to know some basic strikes. just depends on which part of martial arts appeals to you the most.

Its often protective enough you have to axe a guy several times before you hurt him through his gear assuming you dont strike him in a gap (where the armor isnt). The average fighter in armored combat sports is a weak grappler. So with my limited 2 years of highschool wrestling, I was able to absolutely shut down fighters twice my size (we dont have weight classes in melees) when I first started fighting.

There was a time when grappling, specifically wrestling played an important part in being a good, well rounded boxer. Back in the day all boxers needed to know how to grapple. Over the years as the gloves increased in size and allowed for less hand movement making it harder to utilise grappling techniques and making it easier to block punches using the gloves themselves boxing changed focussing more on the punching aspect and less on grappling. Although some modern day boxers do still use wrestling techniques.

If you don’t know how to strike you are not a complete fighter. Even if you have excellent grappling, a pretty average striker, has a very high chance of destroying you in a fight. You’re gonna heel hook him? What if he controls range and moves his feet and waits to counter you with his jab. When was the last time you tried to take down someone that was allowed to strike you with all 8 limbs? A grappler can beat a striker, if he can get it to the ground. A striker has an immediate advantage because it starts on the feet, if you ambush the striker you’ll win, but toe to toe you’re just as likely to get caught, fail a takedown and be on your back getting your head kicked in while you’re trying to establish grips. You’re used to training against an opponent that is abiding by a set of rules. In a fight to the death, you grab your heel hook, he’ll grab your nuts and castrate you or pull out a knife and stab you or have his buddies come kicked you in the back of the head . On the feet you have the option to move and use your environment. On the ground you’re just a shark out of water.

Best option is too know everything, because some guys are as good as you on the feet as you are on the ground, and you have to close that distance safely, knowing where you’re safe and not safe in the striking range is also very important for grapplers to know.

I've ways held boxers and strikes in higher renown. I think anyone can learn grappling skills but not everyone can be an effective striker. Knocking out someone without breaking your hand is more impressive than choking someone out.

As wrestler who just started boxing, I'll say it takes is one punch to knock someone out. But it takes a lot of moves and combinations to set up a submission.

Even being somebody who practices shotokan, he's right, real fighting is fucking dirty and even if you don't 'like' dirty fighting you need to prepare for that, someone is more liable to do a cheap headbutt to your face outside and then sucker punch you than fight fair because that's how the real world works and no amount of strike oriented training will pepare you for that. With that in mind I actually asked my teachers once about how you would deal with a headbutt if someone grabbed you for example and they just showed me a neat elbow strike I wouldn't have thought of and it was such an obvious move when you learn it and realise, quick and it will get you out of trouble fast. You can very easily tell just based on the scenarios and discussions people have who is learning martial arts as a sport vs self-defence.

I agree that one needs at least a modicum of grappling of some sort. At least you can puzzle through some defenses even if you don't concentrate on that aspect

The real issue here is that grappling as a form of martial arts is so slept on. Boxing and kickboxing are so hyped up in our culture that we forget that grappling is also a huge element of fighting. Just like we are blown away by Mike Tyson or Muhammad Ali’s skills, we forget how elite grapplers can absolutely dominate an opponent. In a way, grappling is more dangerous because everybody knows what boxing or kickboxing is, everybody understands it to some degree. But not as many people understand the danger of grappling, they don’t understand the danger they are in when a grappler gets a hold of their leg or waist. To be a proficient fighter, you have to be able to do BOTH, which is what we see with high level MMA fighters today. They can strike and grapple to a high standard.

I feel like it really just boils down to who’s better in general. Like grappling is great until you can’t get a hold of them. And there’s the saying that it only takes One. Same applies, if you can’t land, and get grabbed and you don’t know how to get out? Then it only takes a few seconds before you either get snapped or choked.

That's why I like the style of karate I do. It incorporates grappling (both standing, takedowns, and groundwork) alongside it's striking. Most modern karate systems only focus on striking unfortunately.

I feel it should be if you can't get back up from bad position after being taken down, take someone down. The average grappler can beat you. I wish I had the takedown game now and counter wrestling I do now years ago. To much focus on mma on jiu jitsu and not enough on dictating position. You put in punches and if I can stay on top I win.

I was boxing sparring with my buddy and embarrassed him ,he got mad took off the gloves and started his bjj on me arm bar got me tapping out real quick...soon has the grappler close the striking gap, the none grappler getting his ass kicked because boxing doesn't really goes further than clinches once we close

I gotta disagree with you on this one Ramsey and here’s why: For starters, your definition of “average grappler” is different than mine. You are a world class fighter with world class exposure, so your standards may be much higher. I have no illusions that I could beat up a professional boxer simply because I competed in wrestling throughout high school. Also, many pure grapplers do absolutely no training against someone who is actively trying to throw strikes at them. Just because a striker has no experience with grappling does not mean that they are an idiot who will just start throwing telegraphed haymakers as hard as they can and become off balanced and upright. Even if we discount the size difference that will occur between people on the street, there are many different types of strikers out there. A boxer who is very quick and powerful with straights and uppercuts will be much much harder to take down or even pull guard on compared to a Deyontay Wilder type of brawler. Making blanket statements without considering the type of striker or grappler is just not being fully accurate. A big part of fighting is being able to take a kick or punch. This is something strikers will generally excel at compared to pure grapplers. There are a large amount of average level grapplers that have never been kicked in the leg or punched in the face before who will literally just buckle from the unfamiliar pain and shut down in a fight, even if they are not concussed (I’ve seen it). All I am saying is that elite strikers are not guaranteed to lose a street-fight with an average grappler any more than a professional baseball player will lose a soccer game to an average soccer goalie.

I trained with boxers and kickboxers years ago, and fought a couple of boxer vs. kickboxer bouts, I was the boxer in both bouts. I don't pick fights, but I have no grappling experience, and fighting a decent grappler would be a nightmare scenario for me.

Primarily I'm a boxer but I do agree ground game is soo important now day's but you need to know how to strike too because if you're fighting a striker you only have a few attempts to get them on the ground before you get lit up, its dangerous if the striker knows how to snuff your takedowns.

I 100% agree with the last sentence Ramsey spoke. Which is not the same as the title of the video. If you don't know how to grapple you are not a complete fighter. That does not mean you do not know how to fight at all. It means that you are not complete. 100% agree. Video title does not match the actual message of the video.
