The big bang is the best explanation for what we observe SO FAR. You imbue the observable Universe with purpose and intention right off the bat, and insert the "something from nothing" fantasy and science does not say that. You say that "You Atheist have a hard time with that one" when, in fact, no Atheist or scientist ever says your imagined statement. You theists always come up with that one. In all fairness, even though I agree the world isn'f fine tuned for life, what you are describing (terrifying, chaotic etc.) are points of view humans have because we have empathy and reason. A baby gazelle being eaten alive still sustains life, even though if goes against our view of compassion and empathy. I just think your point of view is very subjective on the compassion of humans. The situation is just something that happens. The caller, the theist introduces the human element by claiming design. They say its an intelligence which set it up this way. Well, now that's in the realm of intelligent beings. Im taking from the point of simply being a living thing. The very nature of being "alive" means you must sustain that status by consuming other organisms that are also "alive". If it were purposely designed this way, it would be like building a virtual world with virtual beings, and the only option is deathmatch. Now thats fine, but you dont get to say you designed it so the things can live when the only possible outcome is that they dont. Its killing for peace and banging for virginity. It doesnt make any sense. I try very hard to avoid anthropomorphising. And im not doing that in this case, the opposite in fact. There is nothing special or unique about humans ability to empathize and care for other individuals in your species. Lots of social animals do it. Saying the world is designed for life when what you mean is it was designed for my nice comfortable existence with central heating and food prepared and medicine to heal me without taking the rest of "life" in to consideration wont get you very far. Caller was even.trying to say "not for humans, for life". Assuming that some entity even has the ability to design a universe, to make it in such a brutal way is cruel. Its not a matter of my opinion. Its just based in the physical facts about the universe.

Just an observation, by far the vast majority of life on this planet are micro organisms. One handful of quality soil will contain about 5 billion individual life forms. They make up well over 99% of all life on, and in the planet.

It is a bit elitist, given the fact that these new entries and changes on the non-academic, everyday meaning of "gender" in dictionaries are VERY recent. Anywhere from 4 to 8-9ish years. You can use the Wayback Machine and compare, for example, the Macmillan dictionary definition of the word "gender" with an entry from September 2011 and the entry today. The whole page is vastly different, and it seems to me it's more to gratify current gender ideologies than to record an actual change in the colloquial usage of the word.

The big problem here is that "randomness" is just code for "we can't predict something." A roll of the dice isn't metaphysically random; gravity is deterministic and controls the outcome with 100% certainty. We simply can't do that calculation in our head when we roll it so we call it random. Random just references our inability to predict something. The laws of physics, however, seem deterministic as far as we can tell, and any hypothetical ontological randomness would be indistinguishable from the epistemic appearance of randomness. As for fine-tuning, those same deterministic forces "tune" chemistry and biology to exist in environments that allow it. Earth is just one environment that allows physics to work on matter in way that it assembles biological life. Nindo also (like most, if not all, theists) really display a gross ignorance of probability. If you roll a 70-quintillion-sided die, the result will be 1 in 70-quintillion, yet it will happen. Randomness (as described above) will produce incredibly improbable results. People only look to explain such improbability, like life being here, when it seems important to us. All the outcomes of all the games in Vegas on a given day would be ridiculously improbable too, but nobody invokes God to explain that.

Gender can be studied scientifically through the intersection of psychology, sociology, anthropology, biology, and biochemistry (probably some political science in there, too). It's a concept, like class or nationality, that can be studied and measured even if it doesn't have a pure physical form. Gender seems to be an emergent property from the interaction of certain behaviors, bodily states, and psychological states with culture. Many cultures ascribe to a gender binary, and some cultures have a more than two genders (e.g. parts of India with the hijra and parts of Somoan cultures with the fa'afine). Most cultures have a bimodal distribution of genders, including those with more than two genders, explaining why two genders stick out so much. I wouldn't be surprised if we see the emergence of new genders (or gender expressions, at least) as we improve our understanding of what gender is and isn't.

I attended a wedding, The thirty-something bride was unashamedly pregnant. The bride wore white and there were 30-year-old bridesmaids. It made me realize that "virginity" can be a social construct and gave me insight into the phase "sex is biological, gender is a social construct". The arguments about this stem from talking at cross purposes. The problem of the infinitesimal probability of earth that the guy arguments is that it is probably true that the exact earth we got is very improbable, but it is equally probable to other alternatives and we had to get one (otherwise we won't exist). Life has “fine tuned” the earth for us to live. The earth was a pretty horrible environment when the oldest evidence of life that has been found indicates life was around. The only thing that would be considered required for our survival at that time was liquid water. The temperature was likely very high because it was the late heavy bombardment; many many massive meteorite impacts over a couple of hundred million years and massive Vulcanism meant there was a lot of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere (and a lot of acids in the air an water). Life appears to be pretty tough. We on the other hand couldn’t live if photosynthetic organisms weren’t keeping the oxygen levels above 15% and those same organisms (and weathering) weren’t locking up greenhouse gasses preventing the now much hotter sun from boiling off the oceans. Etc etc

That kind of limits how drastically different sexes can be. In fact I think all individuals who successfully reproduced can easily be placed in one of the two sexes by their role in reproduction and that might be taken as "proof" of our species only having two sexes. PS Also I think the gender vs sex distinction is quite specific to a certain culture and situation. At least I feel that to translate it into e.g. finnish, russian(probably most other languages too) while maintaining the same nuanced difference, is impossible in 1-2 words and pretty much forces you into using extra explanations.

Part of why I don`t identify myself as an atheist is because of all the political baggage the term has acquired. It also seems odd that every atheist on the show has the same views on trans people, and the one time a guest voiced a contrary opinion he was immediately, almost instinctively, thrown to the wolves. We often criticize religious people for living in an echo-chamber, and being unwilling to openly and honestly discuss contrary views, but whenever differing political views are brought up they are dismissed and laughed at. To be clear, Nindo is a fool, but he should not be dismissed because of his political views. Edit: I was just making a point about free speech and conformity, not trying to start anything. Atheism IS defined as "A lack of Belief in a Deity or Deities." That is the ONLY requirement. Beyond that, Atheists tend to be more accepting of others for who and what they are. You can be an Atheist who doesn't accept others for who they are. That, is your choice. But, you should be aware that your stance may not be accepted by others. To act as a reminder, I will quote a ruling in Loving v. Virginia that legalized and decriminalized Interracial marriages. "Almighty God created the races white, black, yellow, malay and red, and he placed them on separate continents. And but for the interference with his arrangement there would be no cause for such marriages. The fact that he separated the races shows that he did not intend for the races to mix." And that is how Theism acted and spoke when Interracial marriage was brought up. God says no to that. That is how Theism works. It keeps you from accepting the "Others" Atheists are not with Allah, God, Yahweh so they are BAD the Theist says. You don't have to accept others but, society will and people will. Just as society didn't accept Interracial marriages but now they do. Just as Society didn't accept Homosexuality but is starting to accept that as well. Theism, acts as the block to acceptance. You can chose to be against equality for others. Or you can choose to be accepting of others. My rule I live by: Consenting adults. All good. If adults consent knowing the consequences of their actions, I do not stand against their actions. I may not always like their decisions but that simple rule, works well for me.

The issue is that "political" views have no bearing on biological demonstrable reality. There's Only two sexes, the genders male and female are directly representable of that reality and as such can and have been used to describe art pieces from both art and vehichles as male and female based on what physical charateristics they share with the physical female charateristics of women and or the physical male charateristics. Any other gender is fully socialy constructed and only exist in ones head alone. Most of which are useless and Only describe a persons sexual preference and favorit colors and hillariously and sadly presented as the whole of their identity. Sure, some such genders try to represent the combination of male and female genes. These combinations are still of X and Y cromosomes, there are no New cromosomes to be clear. The thing is we developed to be only two by nature and when the body makes a mistake in reading it's genetic material and mistakenly develope both, it fails to produce fully functional sex organs. Nor have any "New" sex organs developed either. It's still various partial developments of the same and only two we've ever had. Politics never will rewrite nature and objective Biology any more than all of humanity praying together never will either. Nature just is and we need to be honest about that. People just need to learn/understand that their personal interpretation of the world and their interpretations of themselves don't influence the workings of reality.

I've done the research and with the 60+ gender identifications floating around there, all I see coming from this is further partitioning of society and even more confusion with how we're to approach each other. If I'm adopting every typical female characteristic and stereotype and someone calls me a 'female,' my answer isn't to throw a fit and call someone a bigot or dumb. Not everyone is keen to what everyone else is experiencing in their minds. Not every presumption of gender should be taken as a major blow to one's character. However, with that many gender identifiers out there, perhaps we're going overboard with being self-absorbed and lacking with a basic understanding of human nature. I think I would agree that being militant on the gender issues is going too far.

Guys, I love the show and you two are excellent hosts, but on this one call you really didn’t handle it well. You left this guys waaaaaay too many outs and ways he could be dishonest. Maybe it’s a testament to the goodness of your character that you trusted this guy too much, but if you wanna get anywhere you have to be utterly vicious in not allowing him to renege on his positions. Also, when you were debating whether he said the Earth was made for “us” or life in general, I distinctly heard him say life multiple times. I must admit, I used to believe, that there are 2 genders, and in a way, I was correct. It's because in my language, there is no difference between gender and biological sex. What helped me understand this difference, is that gender can be described as a "role in society" sort of. If you describe it as that, there is absolutely no limit to how many genders there are. Btw, there aren't just 2 biological sexes either, but most of the people fall into one of two categories, there are some exceptions though.

Re: "Universe is random" Depending on your definition of random. Formation and evolution of galaxies, stars, planets obeys the laws of physics, which are not random. But clumping of matter into galaxies, star formation, planetary formation goes one way or another a lot by chance. Small variations in initial conditions cause big variations in long term results. When gravity coalesces matter, small (random) variation in density get amplified by gravitational coalescing. In this sense, universe is random. A bunch of dice gets rolled for each galaxy, star and planet. Our Earth is the one that rolled the winning combination, that we know of. And we only know that because we've got a winning combination, otherwise we would not be here.

Great comment by Rudy on gender. Being a skeptic is all about being able to go beyond what appears to be true at first sight. Gender has never been binary, it varies a lot from culture to culture, and throughout history. It's ok to be unaware of this fact, but being a skeptic is acknowledging our own misconceptions, and questionning the things we think we know. Once you start thinking about gender, it quickly becomes obvious that the male/female dichotomy is simplistic at best. The caller was disappointing, he was so sure of himself, yet clearly didn't grasp the basics of skepticism.
