You are either quite young (say under forty) or very very healthy. When this old theist catches a cold, it usually lasts between a fortnight or threeweeks; but then I'm not sure I involve the Almighty,and put more dependence on honey and hot lemon. I feel I can tell you this, just don't tell the born-again lot.

Prayer is one of the most useless and laziest things a person can do. It's basically wishful thinking in asking for someone else to do something so they don't have to do anything to make it happen. It's basically "Let someone else do it. " mentality. It's just a meaningless, empty way to show you have compassion for someone. It's the "thoughts and prayers" for everything that doesn't go right.

I think it's horrifying that a person can wrong another person. Not make amends with that person. Not earn forgiveness from that person. Pray to god, and feel relief from his actions that hurt another person, without actually doing anything to make things better. And think he's actually doing a good thing. This is awful.

Example: how many people do you think you would need to put in a room for there to be a 50-50 chance that two of them would have the same birthday? 365/2=~182? . . . . . 23 is the answer. Just 23. With 70 people, is 99.9% Related question: same room, same set up, but how many are needed to get a 50-50 chance of the same birthday as YOU? A: 253. Almost impossible + repeated attempts ≠ a miracle

People like him who do horrible things often repent and seek forgiveness, unable to get it from their victims, they fall for religion arguments convincing them if they repent "from the heart", forgiveness will be granted. Historically religions have taken advantage of this natural urge to want to be better. Ex. St. Peter's Cathedral was built out of guilt.

Where do they go? I'm also concerned about Christian women who re marry after their Christian husband dies. What if the woman finds a greater love? Does the original husband then miss out? All the time he was waiting and she ends up having a greater love with some other Christian. She may not want to even see her ex again as she worked out he was actually not right for her after all. What happens to all the divorced Christians who follow their Jesus but hate their ex's? What happens to all the children of christian parents who worked out their parents beliefs weren't justified? Does a raped Christian girl (or boy) meet up with their Christian repented abuser after death? That would be difficult. Are you sure you know what happens here? @AtheiHumanist it reminds me of some of the stuff I'd heard in my church when I was in high school. A 45-year old youth group leader molested a teenage girl and after getting caught, he wouldn't shut up about God's forgiveness, and that he spoke to God and yadda, yadda, yadda, God said it's okay. Nevermind that he essentially ruined the girl's life. How he acted, and how the congregation reacted, were my cue that it was all bullshit and I walked away, first from the United Methodist Church, then religion altogether. He never asked her forgiveness, the church never considered her feelings, only that God forgave him. So yes, it is projection on my part. I've realized that the ones who sit in the front row at church and thump their bibles the loudest are the ones with something sinister to hide.

Just googled Hacksaw Ridge -- it's a Mel Gibson movie about WWII and Seventh Day Adventists. Hoo boy, Jesse has found Jesus via Mel. Why do people think anyone but the person they harmed has the power to forgive them? If I didn't harm you, you can't forgive me and have it mean a damn thing. If someone harms me, nobody else has the right to forgive that person but ME! So get out of here with your meaningless forgiveness, Jesse. If you earned that guilt, own it. God isn't going to give you a free ride, no matter how drunk you are on the idea. You hurt someone. Live with it, die with it, or do what you can to make up the damage you did to that person. Maybe Miracle Mel will forgive you.

Everything about this call stinks of "I talked myself out of feeling guilty for the wrong I committed". Which ok... You're training yourself into becoming a sociopath as far as I'm concerned. Your feeling of guilt is specifically a reaction to knowing you did wrong, and to compel you to make amends. Talking yourself out of that feeling only makes it easier for you to wrong others in the future and not feel guilty about it. That's fucked in the head thinking as far as I'm concerned.

So Jesse saw the movie Hacksaw Ridge and saw it as a miracle? Did Jesse forget the rest of World War 2? Does He not get that 75 million people died during that war? Does he understand that about 20 million civilians died as a result of starvation, disease, massacres, bombings, and genocide? Yes Desmond Doss did help save over 70 wounded soldiers and is definitely a hero , however , about 2,500 American soldiers and a similar amount of Japanese soldiers died on that ridge. Jesse should think about how many of those 75 million who lost their lives prayed. To invoke Hacksaw Ridge as some sort of evidence that prayer works is quite stupid.

If everyone was like Desmond Doss, we wouldn't have a lot of these issues you listed. So considering Doss's belief in God gave him the conviction to be who he was then maybe discouraging any faith might be counter productive

@@desertsand8778 Unfortunately, not every person of faith is like Doss. Many use their faith to discriminate against, to commit murder, to slow down progress, etc. On the other hand, there are plenty of people who are like Doss but lack the belief in a god and yet do have the conviction to be good people.

I actually saw an apologetics video on this. Apparently that verse is _metaphorical_ now... as they all end up getting retconned into being. They explained it as referring to when the leaders of countries come to an agreement or bargain on something. So, basically, God just watches two humans suss out how to get along, and then claims credit for whatever they accomplish by learning to cooperate with one another.

"what if a non-christian has a prayer answered" "you have to understand it's not just god, there are other entities" so...... sometimes satan successfully answers prayers?? sounds like we should start asking if all the non-biblical catholic stuff about hell is completely false and if maybe the gnostics were right about the bible being a smear campaign against satan
@smequals
@smequals 4 жыл бұрын
Jesse, if you can’t talk about prayer in a general sense - how it works, what evidence there is that it works, if your God actually does answer some prayers and not others, what priorities your God has in answering prayers, etc, then it does no good to talk specific situations. Hacksaw Ridge is a great story and a true event, but only for what actually took place. There is no evidence that any prayers were answered that day, especially for all the people who died.

Other entities? Other gods? I mean it's mentioned in the bible that there are other gods, but the Abrahamic god just wants you to worship it. If we stay within the Christian faith, wouldn't it make more sense that the bible was created by the devil? So the god of the bible is actually the devil (devil isn't mentioned in the old testament at all btw) and is converting people away from the actual good god/gods? Think about it, it makes so much sense.

Secondly, the use of fallacies as the foundation of your argument does not make those arguments stronger, in fact, it makes it invalid. @Almighty Jesus, The difference between you and I, apart from you sounding like and angry, resentful, hateful and spiteful person, while I'm not, is that as a child I was ignorant of the tools needed to differentiate fact from fiction and was indoctrinated to accept fiction as fact, but as I grew older I and gained the tools needed and the knowledge and understanding to comprehend the fact that all religious scriptures are unjustified stories, whereas you on the other hand, went from being justified in disbelief in your younger years to accepting an unjustified and unjustifiable set of beliefs when you are obviously old enough to utilize the tools available. So, who's the "fool"... ;) Oh, and I'm not sure what you're on about with the OT, I was very well versed on the whole Bible by the time I had finished year 6, and while I didn't like it, I was conditioned to accept it as "Gods will". I'm sorry to say, but both your comments only serve to make you look like an angry fool, if I were you I would stop commenting.

If he if gonna tell us about that medic from hacksaw ridge, that he was always praying and that he was a devoted christian, that he survived and he saved alot of other soldiers lives, isnt that taking all the effort he made and just giving it to god? I mean, the guy chose to stay, stayed up all day and all night trying to find soldiers to carry back and get to a triage, so all he did was cause of god and not himself? I dnt think thats entirely the case.

I love Rudy's eyebrows and I'm very jealous of them because mine are not as good. You might say I covet my neighbor's eyebrows. Someone hand me a penitential of St. Benedict so that I might fully understand the acts of contrition necessary to cleanse this sin of covetousness. Wait, wait, could someone first explain to me why this is a sin in the first place? Did I make God angry by not being satisfied with the eyebrows he gave me? What if I had really thin eyebrows and everyone made fun of me for it? What if I cry myself to sleep at night? If I apply makeup, is that enough to make God angry, or do I need to have a leg hair to eyebrow transplant before I incur His holy wrath? Thanks for any help you can give because I ask god and he doesn't actually reply, thanks.

Jesse wanted forgiveness for his wrongdoing, but he couldn’t get it from his ‘victim’, so he decided to become religious and get forgiveness from God. Amazingly, Jesse decided that God did indeed forgive him, so he felt better about himself. Isn’t that just a wonderful story that anyone could tell themselves to never have to feel bad about any of the bad things they have done and continue to do to others?? Hmmmm… Jesse is also a terrible Christian if he thinks no one should pray for others only themselves. What an incredibly selfish outlook to have.
