A great tip is to buy a bigger glass. That way you can start having fewer drinks, without cutting back on alcohol!
@goodolarchie6 ай бұрын
Funny, and in all seriousness having smaller glassware is a nice little hack. As beer cans have gotten taller in the 16oz and stovepipe formats and higher abv, it's easy to think "I've had one beer today" but 16oz of 8.5% is almost two drinks. We sip subconsciously, but we pour/fill very deliberately. With a smaller glass you're self-regulating both consciously (as you refill) and subconsciously (as you consume the glass).
@stein21376 ай бұрын
@goodolarchie or you could go out to drink instead. Then you'll get a smaller beer (0.4 litres is the new standard in Norway, although it used to be 0.5 ("shrinkflation")), for as much as 5x what you'd pay at the store. So not only would you get a smaller drink, but the prices (especially post covid) makes it impossible to drink too much 😆

As I got older, my tolerance for alcohol dropped. It got to the point where I would get a sinus headache within minutes of finishing one drink. But I wanted to drink socially. One or two beers or glasses of wine with friends. At that time, my physician was an old-fashioned, proverbial "Country Doctor." A wonderful human being. During my annual physical, I told him about my alcohol intolerance, my desire to drink socially, and could he recommend anything that would allow me to drink. In a very caring way, he essentially told me, "Come back to me when you have a real problem." I never forgot that. He's sinced passed, but I've never found another doctor that can compare with him.

This topic can get rather technical, but something to remember is the fact that sugar, high fructose corn syrup, and ultra-processed foods are also very destructive to the liver, brain, and microbiome. If you're going to enjoy some alcohol periodically, it makes great sense to also understand the dangers of consuming so many other products that are also wreaking havoc on our health. Salad dressings, sugar-filled drinks, cereal, fast-food, condiments, snacks, and all those stupid various types of protein and cereal bars. They are Ultra processed foods loaded with bad stuff disguised as "good for you."..... Boosting your glutathione levels, and understanding the role of fiber in insulin resistance is also key in helping your body combat the various toxic load it faces from many angles, including alcohol.... I guess my point is, alcohol is not the only bad guy in the movie.

The best way to avoid alcohol is to avoid social occasions that tempts you for a drink or two. Then the question comes down to which is a worse killer - loneliness or occasional drinks with friends? Dr has been brilliant in allowing us a peak into the research data available and the conclusion is obvious- if you enjoy drinking, cap it at 1--2 a week. Dont start it if you don't. if you compare the risk value of low alcohol consumption vs. other risks we can't avoid, let's say air pollution risk because of the time spent outside, this is a negligible risk to undertake.

I didn't drink for about 20 years. Now I have 1-2 drinks per week, and that's about 6 years now. Granted, everyone ages at an accelerating rate after middle age, but it also seems to be that even that small amount of alcohol is causing me to visibly age faster. I do find it a good way of unwinding on a Friday/Saturday night by having a glass of something with dinner. (I also started working in an office during this period, so higher stress levels now.) But at some point in the future I'll probably go back to removing it from my diet entirely.

Coffee for the liver. It mostly comes down to why you drink and what you do when you drink. I doubt you can really study alcohol's effects without considering social context. A little wine with a meal, knocking back some suds with your friends is not going to do you in. If you're getting wasted on the weekend or self-medicating, staring into the void of depression or anxiety, then you have underlying problems that alcohol isn't helping. I was a heavy drinker for 30 years, doing good to keep it under a six pack a day towards the end. No regrets. I quit for good 3 months ago. It wasn't difficult once I got my anxiety under control, and the naltrexone didn't hurt. I'm in picture perfect health, better than most tee-totallers I know. Heart's in great shape, 15% body fat, blood pressure, cholesterol, liver markers all in the ideal range. I wish I could hold it to a few drinks every now and then. But apparently I can't.

I don't get drunk usually, but I'd keep a buzz going in my off times. I never blacked out, or put myself or others at risk. My blood pressure was creeping up and I was worried about my liver and just my overall long term health once I'd hit 50, so I course corrected. Some health authorities call 2 a day for a male "heavy drinking" and here's a recommendation of no more than two a week. The problem is that I end up not taking them seriously.

So I'm wanting to build up muscle before I cut anymore so I don't look too thin. I do workout with dumbells. The challenge now that I don't have the calories from drinking and I eat healthy is to get enough calories to build muscle. Good problem to have. I do some tough hiking already. That and not ever eating junk food explains why my physical health is already better than most men my age (52). But, yeah, I'd like to increase my VO2 max with running or some other exercise. @fraziermichaelj6 ай бұрын
The honest answer is to stop drinking. Your liver is the most unique organ in your body and has the ability to heal itself better than any other. When you reduce the toxins into your body, you give your liver, GI and digestive system a break; a chance to recover. Talk to your doc about intermittent fasting and a new diet that supports gut and liver health. Reduce refined carbs/added sugar because even if it’s not alcohol-related, there’s always non-alcoholic fatty liver disease to be weary of. Good luck and good health, my friend.

I had a bad habit of consuming 3-4 beers on a daily basis (and I DO mean daily basis) for somewhere between 8-10 years I wanted to quit but it was extremely difficult for me. It was impossible to imagine an evening without drinking. Somehow I was randomly able to stop one day about 4 months ago and haven’t craved any or had any since then. Feels great to have that monkey on my back And she’s right guys, some people are definitely genetically predisposed to suffer from alcoholism. I definitely was, on both sides of my family. And also like she said, it’s best to just not drink at all in that case, you don’t want to go opening Pandora’s box because you may not be strong enough to close it again. Alcohol is an extremely powerful drug that is regarded very lightly and causally in our society despite all the destruction it continues to cause

Think it's important to note here that acetaminophen is not an NSAID. The recommended dose is no more than 4GRAMS per day . Would do well to take even less than that as it messes with your liver.

I wish I were a scientist and could do some experiments into my my theory. I feel so much better during and after a fast when I have some alcohol with or after my last meal before fasting. My theory is that the alcohol prompts a stronger rebound effect. Ancients, like the knights hospitallers, had drinking alcohol 2-3 times per week as part of their regiment. And they had tremendous results. Vallete is said to have vigorously lead the counterattack against the ottomans during the seige of Malta at age 70. Last thought: how much of the I’ll effects of alcohol on our bodies are due to the million inyekshuns we get as children and/or chemical preservatives that are in the alcohol today?

I consume alcohol - especially beer and hard cider - regularly, and I haven’t been drunk in decades. It’s because I hold firm to a rule that’s very easy to hold to: “Don’t drink unless you’re eating at the same time - a meal or munchies.” Just alternate between chomp and gulp and you don’t get drunk because you get bloated first. There’s a lot of great combos, and no matter how great a drink tastes, it tastes even better if you’re thirsty.

but whats the point of drinking alcohol if not getting drunk? If it was just the taste I would definetly drink alcohol free beer.
@jeffreylevin15666 ай бұрын
@@tommuller849 It's all in how the alcohol pairs with the food -- the aforementioned combos. My favorite: super-hot wings with a Labatt Maximum Ice beer chilled in a freezer for an hour and a half. If you think that alcohol free beer can match real beer for taste, you need a more discriminating pallet.

How do you keep you weight down to a healthy level or don't you? Alcohol packs lot of calories.

Yeah. I only drink to get drunk. I have kids which means I don't get to drink very much anymore.

I’m drinking a bottle of wine a day but I’m always hydrated throughout the day and rarely have a hangover, my bloods are perfect, as is my health with taking plenty of supplements, but still I worry that this isn’t helping my brain cell count

Exactly. And I think the monumental point she and virtually everyone misses when they think about drinking alcohol in the abstract is that tomorrow’s brain damaged alcoholic starts with just one drink. The shit is addictive. Snorting a line of coke once a week might enhancer your attention and increase productivity? Let’s do some clinical trials.
