A great tip is to buy a bigger glass. That way you can start having fewer drinks, without cutting back on alcohol!
@goodolarchie
@goodolarchie 2 ай бұрын
Funny, and in all seriousness having smaller glassware is a nice little hack. As beer cans have gotten taller in the 16oz and stovepipe formats and higher abv, it's easy to think "I've had one beer today" but 16oz of 8.5% is almost two drinks. We sip subconsciously, but we pour/fill very deliberately. With a smaller glass you're self-regulating both consciously (as you refill) and subconsciously (as you consume the glass).
@stein2137
@stein2137 2 ай бұрын
@goodolarchie or you could go out to drink instead. Then you'll get a smaller beer (0.4 litres is the new standard in Norway, although it used to be 0.5 ("shrinkflation")), for as much as 5x what you'd pay at the store. So not only would you get a smaller drink, but the prices (especially post covid) makes it impossible to drink too much 😆

This topic can get rather technical, but something to remember is the fact that sugar, high fructose corn syrup, and ultra-processed foods are also very destructive to the liver, brain, and microbiome. If you're going to enjoy some alcohol periodically, it makes great sense to also understand the dangers of consuming so many other products that are also wreaking havoc on our health. Salad dressings, sugar-filled drinks, cereal, fast-food, condiments, snacks, and all those stupid various types of protein and cereal bars. They are Ultra processed foods loaded with bad stuff disguised as "good for you."..... Boosting your glutathione levels, and understanding the role of fiber in insulin resistance is also key in helping your body combat the various toxic load it faces from many angles, including alcohol.... I guess my point is, alcohol is not the only bad guy in the movie.

Right? I have some tee-totaling family members who are so braggy about how they abstain but are morbidly obese, sedentary and eat general $hit. I'm at a perfect BMI, work out daily, eat 80-90% highly nutritious and have on average 2 drinks a week, which I choose wisely to match the meal or occasion and make sure to savor it. I've abstained many times for health reasons but the reality is that a crispy chardonnay on a hot summer evening can be so lovely, not unlike a juicy burger, or a chocolate mousse cake. Understand it's not 'good' for you, at all, but some things in life are just about pleasure and that's fine.

As I got older, my tolerance for alcohol dropped. It got to the point where I would get a sinus headache within minutes of finishing one drink. But I wanted to drink socially. One or two beers or glasses of wine with friends. At that time, my physician was an old-fashioned, proverbial "Country Doctor." A wonderful human being. During my annual physical, I told him about my alcohol intolerance, my desire to drink socially, and could he recommend anything that would allow me to drink. In a very caring way, he essentially told me, "Come back to me when you have a real problem." I never forgot that. He's sinced passed, but I've never found another doctor that can compare with him.

Coffee for the liver. It mostly comes down to why you drink and what you do when you drink. I doubt you can really study alcohol's effects without considering social context. A little wine with a meal, knocking back some suds with your friends is not going to do you in. If you're getting wasted on the weekend or self-medicating, staring into the void of depression or anxiety, then you have underlying problems that alcohol isn't helping. I was a heavy drinker for 30 years, doing good to keep it under a six pack a day towards the end. No regrets. I quit for good 3 months ago. It wasn't difficult once I got my anxiety under control, and the naltrexone didn't hurt. I'm in picture perfect health, better than most tee-totallers I know. Heart's in great shape, 15% body fat, blood pressure, cholesterol, liver markers all in the ideal range. I wish I could hold it to a few drinks every now and then. But apparently I can't.

@@BRIANDER100 Every day, I'd guess the average over 30 years was ~4 drinks a day. More towards the end, sometimes a case a day on the weekends. To be clear, that's way too much. I don't get drunk usually, but I'd keep a buzz going in my off times. I never blacked out, or put myself or others at risk. My blood pressure was creeping up and I was worried about my liver and just my overall long term health once I'd hit 50, so I course corrected. Some health authorities call 2 a day for a male "heavy drinking" and here's a recommendation of no more than two a week. The problem is that I end up not taking them seriously.

@@JorgeGarcia-no6hf Thanks for the encouragement! Here's how I turned it around: A 7 day water fast. Started re-feeding with homemade kefir. Then gradually introduced a Mediterranean-style diet. So I'm wanting to build up muscle before I cut anymore so I don't look too thin. I do workout with dumbells. The challenge now that I don't have the calories from drinking and I eat healthy is to get enough calories to build muscle. Good problem to have. I do some tough hiking already. That and not ever eating junk food explains why my physical health is already better than most men my age (52). But, yeah, I'd like to increase my VO2 max with running or some other exercise. The best way to avoid alcohol is to avoid social occasions that tempts you for a drink or two. Then the question comes down to which is a worse killer - loneliness or occasional drinks with friends? Dr has been brilliant in allowing us a peak into the research data available and the conclusion is obvious- if you enjoy drinking, cap it at 1--2 a week. Dont start it if you don't. if you compare the risk value of low alcohol consumption vs. other risks we can't avoid, let's say air pollution risk because of the time spent outside, this is a negligible risk to undertake.

I drink pretty regularly, it’s my one stitch. Because alcohol takes preference in the body to be used for energy first, I run quite often around and even during consumption. It’s not uncommon for me to smash a 5k after 2-4 drinks. I supplement with a multi vitamin/extra vitamin C before and after drinking. I don’t eat many carbs during or after drinking. I also make sure I’m in a calorie deficit before I consume, to top out my calorie allowance for the day, that’s usually exercise induced. I aim to burn 1200 cals a day through exercise, so it’s not as if I’m starving myself. That mixed with my steady intake of omega 3, 7500iu vit D3, extra magnesium supplement, trying to consume one drink an hour, and hydrating throughout, I’ve been able to have my cake and eat it too.. so to speak. I’m not saying this is an easy protocol to follow, or that it’s even offering me any benefits that can be shown in a clinical way to mitigate. All I can go by, even after losing 60 pounds over the last 1.5 years. I’ve been able to keep the weight off, while enjoying alcohol - trust me, the next days still exist, but I’m enjoying my life on both sides, and I think that’s important. Some people might think there’s a fundamental problem that I feel I need alcohol to enjoy life, that’s fine. To each their own. In that, I always end up at a spot where even with all above.. my body is like, dude.. time for a break, and that results in weeks and at times months of sobriety. I do know fundamentally.. I’ll never stop unless it’s forced upon me, through some sort of concern. Just simply being honest, and adding to the content here. I live a good life, I want to live life my way, and even with my one bad habit here, I do try my best to do it as safely as possible, if possible. Regardless.. it’s my choice, and any negatives that come with it, that’s on me. Have a great day. Thanks for the video

I mention the running/alcohol thing because steady state running is a calorie burner, and with alcohol taking preference as the fuel source, I feel this is an effective way to get it burned off faster. Alcohol is a diuretic and diuretics in general pull out glycogen. Based on my observation, this reduction mechanism usually is associated with health improvements that are also associated with fasting and ketogenic diet. Either go out for a walk to burn those extra carbs or take alcohol (ie acetaldehyde = toxin) and burn those extra carbs. Oh, you could also not take carbs and alcohol to get the same benefits!

And also like she said, it’s best to just not drink at all in that case, you don’t want to go opening Pandora’s box because you may not be strong enough to close it again. The honest answer is to stop drinking. Your liver is the most unique organ in your body and has the ability to heal itself better than any other. When you reduce the toxins into your body, you give your liver, GI and digestive system a break; a chance to recover. Talk to your doc about intermittent fasting and a new diet that supports gut and liver health. Reduce refined carbs/added sugar because even if it’s not alcohol-related, there’s always non-alcoholic fatty liver disease to be weary of. Good luck and good health, my friend.

Lots of great info here. I agree that acetaminophen should be avoided, especially when consuming alcohol. However acetaminophen is technically not an NSAID like ibuprofen. Acetaminophen (one brand name is Tylenol), is in the class of analgesics (pain relievers) and antipyretics (fever reducers), but it is not an anti-inflammatory, and therefore not a Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug (NSAID).

I drank an average of 8-12 drinks a day for 15 years (I rarely remembered going to bed). To mitigate, I drank a ton of coffee and I took milk thistle. 2 years ago, I cut back to drinking once a week or so. My liver function tests are normal for the first time in 20 years, and imaging shows all good.

great video. yeah, alcohol is a mycotoxin, and neurtoxin. so besst to avoid. i always did best drinking once or twice a month. getting back towards that state. the food combining and sequencing is shit advice. alcohol inhibits proper digestion. best to not drink for 4 hours after a meal. and not drink in the evening, due to hormones and sleep quality. if i had a drink or 2 now, in evening, shilajit, saw palmetto, horny goat weed, siberian ginseng, rhodiola, and chlorella get me feeling awesome again, after a melon, and a bunch of grapes. or a few oranges and a grapefruit.

It’s hilarious that she thinks people have this moment in time where they can abstract and reflectively discern whether or not they can “harmlessly” enjoy a drink or two or else choose to abstain outright because of a prior family history or personal propensity of succumbing to addiction. To a ubiquitous substance that is heavily marketed and embedded in our social customs. And that once consumed to varying degrees literally rewires the biological pathways in our brains.

Don't support drinks. If I must drink, I'll do it like a worker in a brewery. They've practiced ingestion of brewer's yeast between beer tastings. You can actually Google this stuff. Learn how the yeast will help you recover. If you can't ingest the yeast, eat two slices of bread after a hard-drinking night instead. You'll be surprised how quick you'll recover the next day. Bread acts like a sponge while the yeast in the bread turns alcohol into vinegar, which in turn, detoxes the body. Please take the supplements mentioned above. It is a preparation for before and after drinking. In addition, there's nothing wrong with a steak and egg breakfast. This will supply immediately, the amino acids, and protein your body craves.

I wish I were a scientist and could do some experiments into my my theory. I feel so much better during and after a fast when I have some alcohol with or after my last meal before fasting. My theory is that the alcohol prompts a stronger rebound effect. Ancients, like the knights hospitallers, had drinking alcohol 2-3 times per week as part of their regiment. And they had tremendous results. Vallete is said to have vigorously lead the counterattack against the ottomans during the seige of Malta at age 70. Last thought: how much of the I’ll effects of alcohol on our bodies are due to the million inyekshuns we get as children and/or chemical preservatives that are in the alcohol today?
