you couldn't have chosen better words! they all perfectly fit into their respective category and increased in difficulty as expected; from, "yeah, that's pretty easy, isn't it?" to, "wait a second, I surely heard this one before; when I give it a few, I might just recall it" to, "what language did you say is this supposed to be?!" English isn't my first language but consider myself to be fairly advanced nonetheless. I used to live in Canada for about five years and don't face any language barriers or whatsoever in everyday situations. but still, while I kept a perfect score during the first two categories, I've only heard of two words in the last one. those aren't exactly words you need to get around in your daily life, but are certainty nice to know.

Yay---21/21. But I'm a former PR writer who, in my late 40s ended up teaching English (favorite job of all time). I'm OLD now...75. My problem is not whether I know the definitions...but whether I can remember them!! So far...so good. Nursing home may be a bit farther off than I worry about. Anyway, your word quizzes are great fun. Thank you.

Brian, it seems you lifted most of these words from French because... : Asset : Atout Vibrant : Vivant Refute : Réfuter Hierarchy : Hiérarchie Scrutinize : Scruter Convey : Transmettre (convoyer sounds similar and somewhat conveys the same idea) Illicit : Illicite Resilient : Résilient Evoke : Evoquer Epiphany : Epiphanie (used only as a religious celebration, it means "what appears" in latin) Mitigate : Mitiger Enigma : Enigme Implore : Implorer Arduous : Ardu Sycophant : Sycophante Sordid : Sordide Disseminate : Disséminer Obstreperous : Agité Vicissitude : Vicissitudes (usually plural) Apocryphal : Apocryphe Encomium : Louanges

You are very expressive and engaging in your presentation, but sometimes that expressiveness works against you because you sometimes give the answer away by emphasizing it when you read the list of options. The more obvious example is with word # 15 of the quiz. You quite seriously give it away.

#19 & #21 got me, but I want to find the words that mean "withhold smugly," "complain at length," & "staunchly unyielding." Having spend more than half a century reading English, I'd say encomium and vicissitude are words that seldom are heard (and the skies are not cloudy all day).
