You’re in the living room decorating the Christmas tree, when you notice something odd. A small pinecone is attached to one of the branches, but when you try to remove it, the thing won’t budge. You shrug it off. After all, it’s just a bit of natural decor, right? Weeks later, you find little creatures everywhere in your living room. The invaders are on the tree, furniture, all over the walls and windows, and clambering up on the ceilings. And they’re fast! Let’s get into it!

Artificial trees can get moldy. I recommend washing them every few years in a bathtub, letting them dry for a week before putting them away, & storing them with a pound of silica gel packets, a box of baking soda, & a car air freshener to prevent that cheesy smell. I also recomend doing everything above (except washing) for standing & walk decorations & ornaments. I just got over toxic mold poisoning from a box of decorations that cracked. First there was vomiting, then dry heaving, then 2 weeks of Bronchitis.

We live with brown reclue spiders. They were here already. Sprays is only a temporary solution, but spraying causes the brown recluses to show up more. What I do is lay out sticky traps and replace them throughout the year. One room was always the hot spot. So it was tackled the hardest. Tips: 1, get rid of cardboard boxes, brown recluses love them, because the boxes also attract other insects the spiders eat. 2, spray the baseboards with a specific mixture. Some pest control employees can tell you what and where to get the ingredients when you have a known brown recluse problem. 3, vacuum often 4, don't leave piles of clothes, towels, toys on the floor, under a bed, or in corners. 5, brown recluses, for me, hate bright light. Placing a night light has shown a decrease in spiders being caught in the sticky trap under a bed verses other spots I always put traps. 6, peppermint bomb your basement and have a fan blow the air around. Since our kitchen is at top of basement steps, this is where spiders will retreat. Be ready and place extra sticky traps at top of stairs. 😳 I might've done too good of a job of scenting the basement earlier this year because now there's too many rollie pollies, flies, crickets, beetles. Not a clue where the hoard of (house) flies came from in the basement. Can only guess dead mice from crawl space, which the basement has open access too. Any brave souls dare to explore ours?? These are what I do, on top of my endless list of household chores I already have to do. And yes, I've been bitten. Adult brown recluse bites are painful! I was scared I was going to lose my left foot last year. It took a few months to heal. There's no anti-venom by the way!

All I had to do was a quick clear-out with the aid of a pest management guy once, and while the brown recluse and black widows were temporarily at bay I cultivated a new population of rustic wolf spiders in my house and property and set up bat boxes. The bats and wolf spiders combined, along with the cellar spiders that are always there, quickly filled the niche, and now I don't have to worry about brown recluse or black widows anymore. 😊

I helped with a tree lot on a church property before. The trees were never shaken, however they might have been before they got delivered to the lot. But, we've brought a tree home once from a family members farm. It was kind of shaken while it was being cut down, but I wish this video came out before thanksgiving to give folks a heads up because I've never thought about hitch hiking bugs before. Sure would've loved a baby mantis though.

We have a zippered bag one and have not had 1 problem yet, and we store it in our basement (old, sandstone foundation), so there's always bugs, but never in the bag. 😊

Another little xmas PSA from your friendly firefighter: If you have a Christmas tree inside your living room, put it in some water so it stays hydrated. Why? Well if you get an electrical short in your lights or have a very unfortunately placed candle, a bone dry tree will be fully engulfed in less than 10 seconds once it catches. Your curtains, wallpaper or furniture will catch next. You are not putting that out with a fire extinguisher anymore. At this point your strategy is called „Get yourself and everyone else the hell out, close all doors behind you, then call 911“. A well hydrated tree with lots of moisture in it will burn a LOT slower, giving you a far better chance to put it out in time.

The good thing about black widows is that they are usually docile. They have no intent of harming you and will only bite if they are afraid or in pain. This does not mean that they should be taken out of the house yourself. A professional should take them outside since most know how to hold them in their hands without harming themselves or the spider.

Oh God! That's like one of my worst nightmares! But we always pack our artificial tree in a plastic bin at the end of the Christmas season.

I've been a subscriber of Brew for years. However, i stopped receiving new video alerts about 8 or 9 months ago. I genuinely thought Brew had stopped making videos. I just checked the video catalog, and just realized that they never stopped posting videos. What gives, KZbin?! 😕

It's Been a Looooooong time Since I've seen a Brew Video... And if I've Found a Mantis Egg Cone [or Whatever they're Called] on a Christmas Tree I would be Amazed to see that I would take Care of those Creatures until they've Grown up and then Release them into the Wild. UnFortunately for Me; I'm Aussie, And I don't Think that this Would Happen Anytime soon. 🙁 Due to the Climate in My Country.

I'd love an ootheca of mantis - they are so beneficial. The others - I would not mind but whatever comes in - I would move them outside to keep winterized.

My parents clean theirs with a leaf blower to shake off dead pine needles and apparently bugs too. In the 20 years of my life we haven't had a problem. So if yall have a leaf blower why not to be extra safe? Edit: Australia doesn't count and it would probably be good to use a leaf blower on plastic trees too to shake them.
