Yes, you know him from The Office, but Rainn Wilson has an inspiring career that not only extends well past that show, but has even evolved past just being an actor. He founded SoulPancake, an incredible platform that creates content celebrating creativity and exploring life’s big questions.
On this episode of Impact Theory with Tom Bilyeu, Rainn Wilson takes on some of the biggest questions we face as a society today--a mental health crisis that is disproportionately harming younger people, climate change, and an epidemic of loneliness that has only gotten worse with the pandemic. He discusses how therapy helped him deal with severe anxiety, talks about why service to others is so important, and advocates looking at the data on big issues like global warming.
Check out SoulPancake at: • What's New?
SHOW NOTES:
Rainn discusses mental health, especially its increase among young people [0:51]
Rainn shares his battle with anxiety, and says it never happened when on stage [6:15]
Rainn talks about the gestalt therapy he has used to deal with anxiety [10:25]
We are most satisfied when we serve others, as that creates human flourishing [15:37]
Rainn advocates compassion for others, and making yourself a better person [21:39]
Gratitude is the number one tool of people of faith [28:08]
All teenagers want to do is be with other teenagers, and right now they can’t [32:47]
Rainn explains how he got involved in climate change [34:09]
Check it out at: • Rainn Wilson FINALLY M...
Tom advocates not merely taking sides on issues, but actually investigating the data [40:01]
QUOTES:
“I’m a big proponent of therapy because my parents didn’t know how to talk about emotions, let alone to teach me how to process feelings.” [11:12]
“We rise to our maximum potential when we’re of service to others.” [17:36]
“One of the worst ways to achieve happiness, contentment, whatever you want to call it, is through materialism.” [18:44]

Imagine that you are caught between two forces. One, the force of conditioning, pulls you toward a life full of effort and struggle. The other, the force of the soul, pulls you toward a life that is effortless. The contest appears to be grossly unfair, because the first force has a huge alliance behind it. Everyone you know accepts that life is difficult , and therefore society demands that you go along, not only in word and deed, but even in the thoughts that run through your head. For your thoughts are not your own. You have assimilated a hundred voices from the wider environment- family, friends, mass media, society in general - and now they speak to you from inside your own mind. You are not your thoughts. When you stop identifying with them, they will weaken and dissolve over time.

@Candy Jones both are correct. Removing them can still mean you understand them and have compassion for them and the state they're in and the role they're playing in your life. But when there's an illness inside the body we want it removed, when there's an illness outside the body we justify why we tolerate it? It's silly. YOU first.

Hey Tom, perfect! I'm always grateful, when celebrities come out about their struggles with depression and/or anxiety. It gives a much-needed focus on this particular pandemic. The truth is, is that people who have no experience with these issues, really don't want to deal with or listen to the cries. I love it (not really) when someone tells you that should be grateful for being on the planet. That every day is a gift. Talk about shaming people, who already feel this way. We crave love and acceptance. Unfortunately, we're always chasing them, when we shouldn't have to. Thank you, Rainn! Thank you, Tom!

In this world in which we are taught to feed our own inner pain, by habitually both talking and thinking about those very events that actually gave birth to it. Of course, it can come as no surprise to see that so many individuals are now having to suffer at the hands of their out of control emotions/thoughts.

This was an interesting topic. I myself do my duty to people but am struggling still in a lot of parts of my life. I am spiritual and I think the real essence is being true to oneself in order to serve. To let go of the daily stress. We do ideally need money to survive and if one makes money does not mean it is bad. It is how we handle our mind, our actions and what we do, hear, say and speak out to another being on this planet. It was nice to hear this reminder by you both and I hope that we all obtain what we want to achieve in life.

I'm 23 and I've been really struggling with depression more than usual these last few years. Been some really lonely and tough times for me. I'm struggling to let go of the past and forget certain traumas and then things I've done that I really regret. I feel like a bad and crap person at times. Thinking I don't deserve to get better and that there's no point for me. So I've basically just been brushing my problems aside or just keeping them all into myself and not doing anything about it. My life feels very dull and I feel vulnerable and scared at times because of this feeling i have. Deep down I know I wanna get better. Watching this and listening was so insightful and gave me alot of relief so thank you.

Very refreshing to hear this. I lost my Mother 3 years ago at 29. And also graduated with a degree in Psychology at 24. One of my professors highly recommended seeing what it felt like to be on the other side of the table. 8 years later, I finally decided to see a Psychologist after experiencing moderate anxiety because our family business was struggling, at one time, I was a solid college hockey player so I lost that identity. I felt like I was floating through life just treading water. Since seeing a Psychologist; I have finally saw a dentist and got my teeth fix which added tons of confidence, I learned how to trout fish in various waterways, and I also obtained my real estate license. All during the pandemic. Invest in yourself, see a Psychologist. There is nothing to be afraid of. All of those hardcore athletes, actors, business people, and musicians are more than likely seeing Psychologists.

Gestalt Theory is a powerful therapy and I often describe it as emotional baggage to my clients, that baggage gets pretty heavy overtime and weighs ourselves down even keeping us stuck in life. When we can understand the messages our emotions have for us they become sign posts to help us move forward and navigate our journey. Suppression leads to depression. Thank you Tom and Rainn for opening up a conversion that has the potential to help people to unpack excess baggage and take a step forward in the direction they need and want in life.

Wow! It resonated with me so much when Tom at 16:08 min said that his anxiety started to develop as soon as his self awareness grew, and then after he began having anxiety he lost his self awareness and had to build it back up to become less anxious again. This is super interesting and I’m so eager to see more research on why it happens in such a pattern.

I completely relate, vicious anxiety attacks controlled my life for years. I’ve taken several psychology courses and listened to people like this for hours on end searching for an answer. Interestingly, neurologically, anxiety shows up in the brain the same way as excitement. If you can trick yourself into turning your anxiety into being amped up about something (easier said than done) the fear melts away. I also recommend reading some of viktor frankl’s books on logotherapy, he talks quite a bit about a solution to that existential dread that causes so much suffering.

I don't know why I feel angry watching this. I'm grateful he's bringing attention to mental health issues, but a lot of them go so much deeper than what's being glossed over the surface here. Feeling suicidal is terrible, going through severe depression is horrible, people can be totally debilitated by it. I've had to be hospitalized on terrible psychiatric wards just desperately trying to get some help and feeling like I've been placed in a prison setting. This issue is a lot more serious than a cocktail conversation. And I believe in being of service, I've volunteered in the past in senior assisted living and nursing centers. But I don't know if it meant much. Older adults can have serious mental health issues as well as younger people. I lost an uncle who was in his 50s to suicide. Loneliness is a problem across the board. I just feel an urgency to speak up about all of this. This pandemic is slowly driving us all crazy.

Hi Lynn, I agree with you 100%. I enjoy Tom's podcast but some like this one miss the mark by over exaggerating the title. However, comments like yours and many others here do exemplify the depth and scope of the hold mental illness has on living in constant emotional pain and uncertainty. I was hoping that their discussion would provide more benefits and techniques of how to remove this emotional prison we find ourselves in.

From what I've experienced, I definitely struggle in the areas of drawing away from my pain and focusing on things outside myself. So I just want to encourage you to go back to this episode the moment when you are feeling less (angry sad scared anxious, revengeful etc.) Which is very normal to feel. If I were to re-explain what I think I'm hearing him say is ... The act of focusing outward. Stepping for a moment, to see the world, people, and past circumstances, WeALL😌 can learn to balance out views ( which we can learn over time). In the "idea" of helping others, we get us distracted from our pain. Thankfulness is also another tool available for us. To stop the painWe feel when thinking about other people places things.frustrations etc He then explained alot of tools and scenarios which lessen the strength our INTENSE feelings.

That's all well and good, but in order to do that, you need to learn how to access your eternal self. Techniques like yoga nidra, Self-Enquiry, Madhyadasha, etc. bridge that gap.

Somebody should do a study based in schools to find out if nutritional deficiencies impact mental health and depression. I had major anxiety problems and suicidal thoughts for years. Found out I have celiac, changed my diet, worked with doctors for 2 years, got my diet on track and got the right supplementation. Mental health dramatically improved with no psych therapy intervention.

Very interesting and full of positivity, as always, but in talking about climate change no mention was made about political and multi-national company interests (energy industries hugely based on fossil fuel, the pharmaceutical industry and the agriculture and food industry) whose interests more often that not go against any changes to counter climate change.

“YOU” are not anxious, your subconscious is 🧘‍♂️
@auralunaa
@auralunaa 3 жыл бұрын
@Ghost Worm Let me clarify :) You’re not in control of anxiety. It’s an automatic, unconscious response to threat/danger. The subconscious, before becoming anxious, is “normal/healthy.” It then learns through unpleasant emotionally activating events or one big emotional experience. Then that is installed and now the unconscious mind activates the FFF-response automatically, without your conscious “consent.” Hence why I say “you” are not anxious, because more often than not we know consciously that it’s irrational to be anxious in certain situations - like social anxiety for instance, you know there’s no reason to be anxious consciously, but the subconscious mind believes otherwise - it has learned there’s danger around other people, and that controls your behavior. Your reticular activating system picks up on a threat immediately, whether in physical reality or mentally, and that can activate the FFF-response - and you’re not in control whether it activates or not. What I’m saying is that a healthy subconscious does not fire the FFF-response. And also, it can be unlearned and rewired to be normal again. Hopefully that makes more sense to what I meant :-)

Rainn is a tremendous ambassador for God-believers in the world who don't feel the need to force religion on others or reject science. Science is not the enemy of religion-ignorance and insecurity are. If someone believes that God created the universe, they can also believe that science was the tool the Divine utilized to carry out such a project.

I DO love what he said about scientists failing us, and to some degree I agree. However I think we’ve been on a pandemic of apathy for many decades and I really think it’s a product of not seeing support and action from the government and major industries who just don’t give a shiz about the data. It’s hard to have enthusiasm and a voice when you feel you’re shouting to the wind.

By doing hours and hours of yoga nidra. It's a relaxation technique similar to a set of guided meditations. Yoga nidra alleviates depression and anxiety by helping relax the physical body and mind, and it can cure even chronic sleep-maintenance insomnia caused by all forms of psychological stress. One concept I'm always curious about is that people keep reiterating we are a social creature and need to be social and serve to be happy. Is this truly the case or just a concept? In certain philosophical circles isolation is where people go to fix themselves. They go to a cave and sit until all the ideas society supplanted in them go away. Touching on materialism again would people really be willing to give up their luxuries? How much money do people waste on fancy hair styles, moisturizes, exercise, diet, comfort (air conditioners, heat, etc.), cars, houses, etc.? If the best path in life was actually not having technology and just living at one with nature would people accept that? One might argue just living in nature, hunting, and gathering seems to bring people peace of mind. Perhaps society is part of the issue in general. Society creates our egos for a purpose after all. Our identities or what we think we are don't actually exist. Only our bodies made up of atoms and particles does.

All societies are corrupt to varrying degrees. That said, don't you enjoy having plumbing in your fucking house? How about being sure that cashiers don't hustle you and actually give you the products you pay for? People should first be thankful for what they have and then try to move forwards and improve their lives and the lives of those around them.
@crpggamer
@crpggamer 3 жыл бұрын
@@rpaulisan The problem is it all comes at a cost. People without egos wont steal. They are taught this by society. Basically what you ask is the question I posed to you. Would you be willing to give up modern day comforts and live a natural life for the betterment of the earth? Most people would say no. They would rather work multiple jobs to keep their comforts and safety. I think these comforts and societies striving to advance cause more problems then they solve. That is just my opinion. Sure I love luxuries and very few people don't. I doubt you would worry about it if you didn't know it existed.
@rpaulisan

@@crpggamer It's not just luxuries though. "People without egos won't steal" - that statement is so wrong there's no way to describe it. People do steal. They also beat, kill and rape. One of my points was about how valuable the law is. A world without police would be absolutely horrific. Go read lord of the flies. Go watch some poor kids play on the playground (if left unsupervised kids can get fuckin brutal). Also what exactly do you mean about living a natural life and why do you assume it would be better? What if mass farming feeds a lot of people and keeps the cost of food low?
