'Pachinko' which is a Korean drama series released on Apple TV+, stars famous names such as Youn Yuh Jung (Minari) and hallyu star Lee Min Ho (Boys Over Flowers). It's based on the New York Times bestseller book of the same name and I've read and watched both (of what's available so far). In short: it's amazing.

I just wanted you to understand that the amount of money that the Japanese company offered to the Korean lady was exactly the same amount that the Japanese Gov. has offered to resolve the Korean comfort women issue. I am quite sure that the author has put this story in the show on purpose.

Beautiful! That is how I would describe this drama. It is beautifully rendered. The team did a wonderful job connecting past and present. The rice Sunja ate in Japan that tasted like home and the rice her mother got her before she sailed to Japan..so poignant. I feel such pride for the Korean people despite me not being Korean for their history and strength. You have endured.

as a korean-american, I can fully relate to what you were saying about identity issues. I'm too “korean” for america and too “american” for korea-which can be hard at times :/ anyways I can’t wait to watch pachinko w my family !! it looks so so good and we always need to remember (and be grateful for) what our ancestors went through during the japanese colonization.

I agree, this is the best Kdrama for 2022. I don’t know what’s coming for the rest of the year. Don’t know what can top this..plus I lovvvvvve Lee Minho and even though his character is a villain, I feel empathy for him. He had to be that way to not just survive but thrive in the environment he was in.

Definitely interesting, Japanese history in regards to the occupied/colonised territories isn’t really discussed much and shown in media. Popular culture mainly focuses on the “good” parts like the Edo period, Samurai in Ghost of Tsushima etc. I’ve recently watched an old movie about the last Chinese emperor’s life (last Emperor 1987) which touches up on the occupation of Manchuria a little(but it’s highly “Hollywoodised” and in English) so it’s good to have a more recent and authentic series to watch.

*This show is sublime ✨️* the way the stories are woven is just hauntingly divine, the characters, storyline, cinematography, the score, the casting is just phenomenal. Their stories have a way of just seeping into you in a way that will stay with you forever, just a must watch 🫶🏽

done watching and rewatching Pachinko until 4th episodes now and im lovinggg it. So many heartwrenching scenes that makes me cry so hard. Its cinematic view is aesthetically pleasing and fresh to look at, and the cast, oh my specially LeeMinho, that man is a very incredible incredible actor. His eyes, body movements, voice modulation just wow. He definitely elevated KoHansu roles from the book. Also KimMinha shes refreshing to watch..

I just watched the series for the first time . Two scenes that I love. 1) Episode 4, when Sunja leaves, when her mother sees the ship disappear from the sea line, she collapses and starts wailing. Her mother knew deep down that she would never see her daughter again. Heartbreaking. 2) Episode 8, when Sunja starts selling kimchi. The last lines of the series, "Best kimchi in the world! This is my mother's special recipe! This is my country's food!". Omg, this woman whom is in a country that doesn't want her, is boldly telling people, "This is my country's food!". Also, I think the details of this scene matter. Remember, Sunja had two valuable items with her. First was the pocket watch which she sold to pay off the debt. And the second were the wedding bands from her mother, which Sunja sold to get the supplies for her food cart. Regardless of how uncomfortable Sunja was or scared, she knew that she had to start selling kimchi because she had no other choice. She was out of options, she had to do what episode 1 said she'd do, which is to endure.

I read the book and was obsessed with it so I was super excited for this adaptation. It did not disappoint! It was artfully shot and portrayed very true to the book. I think Lee minho's character is so complex in how he bounces back and forth between a villian and someone who loves sunja. Each time I read the book I felt a different way about the character. I also recommend min jin lee's other book, free food for millionaires, if you liked pachinko

I read the novel last year, and I liked it very much, but didn't quite love it. I do, however, strongly recommend it to everyone. It really has the potential to become a classic, and people will still read it in another 50 years. The series is great. Grandmother Sunja is fairly known to me by now, but I was mesmerised by the actress playing teenage Sunja. WoW!. Everything else you said I agree with. My only tiny complaint is the playing with the timeline. I just don't think Solmon deserves so much screen time. The heart of the story is Sunja. Fantastic series!

Anna, your review is excellent. Lee Min Ho was in my first my first Korean drama & I was hooked. I started the book but did not get very far before the series began. The book must be amazing & I will finish it. The series was brilliant, the actors, director, & crew came with their “A” games. I can’t make enough positive comments about the series. Now I have questions as I think many that watched it to the end may have. Do you believe 8 episodes was enough to do the book Justice? Am I the only one that thought Lee Min Ho would have a larger part based on the publicity for the series? He did an amazing job as his first villain.) Does the book leave you with more answers as to what may have happened to the other characters throughout the years? Did Noa live? Again, thank you for sharing your thoughts.

I love your content and am excited about reading the book first. One of the reasons why ‘Memoirs of a Geisha’ is not in Japanese is because the story is based on several lives of different geishas and the author did not have permission to use any of their stories. Additionally, the author was not fluent in Japanese either.
