I remember hearing raves when it came out, and then when it hit critical mass, inevitably it won't be a hit for everyone. I've had it on my shelf for a while; I think I'd enjoy it

Yeah. I do think the narrative is quite negative these days for some bizarre reason. Regardless, I think it’s a fantastic book. I think you’ll like aspects of it.

After you did the "series to watch" I ended up waiting for this. I'm an expat myself, so this definitely peaked my interest! Also, loved the quotes addition, as it gave me a feel for the writing as well.

I have kept going back and forth on on if want to read this because of the mixed reviews. I think you've sold me now. It sounds like something I'd like to spend time with. (Plus i own it so was going to try it anyway)

Thank you so much for doing this review, I really valued hearing your take on this story. I personally didn't really enjoy my reading experience of this book, but I actually think it had more to do with the fact that I read it at the wrong time in my reading journey (when I was reading mostly fast-paced YA fantasy) rather than the fact that it's not a story that I can personally relate to. I loved the start, but quickly lost interest in the later generations. Still a very powerful story though, so I am totally not surprised to hear that it worked well on TV. Loved hearing your thoughts!

That’s fair! I can imagine it being wildly different to YA fantasy haha and likely throwing you off as a result. Thanks Esmay!

That second quote is sadly true - the more power a man gets, the more inhuman he becomes.
