Just did a 2000km road trip in the previous generation kiwd. Averaged 19km/l. Car was fully loaded with camping gear, water tank etc. Never struggled on the highway or the hilly roads around harrismith.

What's your driving style? I like to keep up with the speed limit, i.e. 120 km/h. Will it still be okay?

Not for me, the one i drove was underpowered and utter garbage because we were only two in the car. Loud tyre noise for something that can't even do 170 km/h. This is the worst car that i have ever seen.

I just finished a 1,800 km trip to the my home village and surrounding areas for the past week in the previous generation. There were 2-3 passengers and their luggage in most instances and I had to negotiate myself through some rough terrain and some bad weather sometimes. I have massive respect for this little car and I now understand why there are so many of them on the road. I did a 400 km trip at the cost of a tank of roughly R 350. I could keep up with most cars on the road. I was happy.

@@juliuskona3299 you do get a lot of road, wind & engine noise in the cabin, but considering the fact that it’s a budget city car it can be forgiven for this and one does learn to block it out especially with the radio on.

I did a test drive yesterday and you can really feel the difference that they did a lot of things with the new Kwid and it feels much more stable than the pre-facelift model which I own for almost 3 years but it lacks the rear wiper, that's the only complain that I have and the steering feels a bit heavier than the old model

@@tinashechoga2613 4 months in and I love it. Nippy and quicky, the AMT drive can use some improvement, it changes from 2nd to 3rd gear too quickly so you lose some torque on the low end of the gears. They need to improve the gears ratios. Other than that, the fuel economy is great from JHB to DNB costs a little over R400.00 at an average speed of 110KMS. It's very well built and there have been no mechanical issues or leaks. I really think they have made a reliable car.

I looked at a Picanto Start and Street model the other day and boy, they do rip you really off. At R181000(street model) with no rear electric windows and steel wheel covers and entry-level Start is all manually controlled windows on all 4 windows but one advantage of a Kia brand is that unlimited warranty

And one disadvantage of any entry-level Toyota is that 3 year 100000km warranty. They should extend to 7 years like in UK for example. I just saw the other day a 2018 Kwid has done 160000km already

Great review, how am I only seeing this now though. I'm a dad of a 2 year old, looking for my first car however I'm looking for something slightly newer in terms of technology as well, safety is important, fuel efficiency too. I've been struggling to find a car. Looking around the 130k or so maximum budget Was considering the VW UP or Renault Kwid. Something stylish though in the looks of the VW UP. Please assist. Much appreciated

Test drove one, the Kwid quit on me before leaving the dealer property. They had to push back the car and prepared me a new one in a hurry. Got in, here is my evaluation: Thing flexes and groans as it moves around corners. ABS is twitchy making you feel like your brakes are made from sandpaper. Pulling away from a red robot on a robust incline means you have to rev the living shit out of the car to get it going and don't dare shift to third before the hill is crested. Overtaking on the highway becomes a religious experience you either pray that the lethargic little blender motor under the bonnet decides to rev up enough to positively influence your speed, or when the required velocity has been attained (after a decade) pray that the valves don't shoot from the head. The noise the engine makes is horrific, last time I heard something that rough was a diesel water pump on a farm built early in the last century. When you drive in a crosswind it feels like the whole thing wants to tip over. I am desperate for a car but not this desperate.

@@Brownbilly29gmail No, but the cars I saw and the one I drove had a lot to be desired. I am now looking at a second hand BMW and even with the higher fuel consumption it looks like a better deal as maintenance cost the same and insurance is a hell of a lot cheaper. Also I don't feel like bully beef in a can in the car. I do 100km of highway driving everyday want something a bit more reliable and robust than what I have experienced.

I hate that front. Not that its ugly per-se, but that styling seems like unnecessary cost additions on a car that doesn't even give you two wipers!

Don't buy this. You can get way better new-ish 2nd hand cars like a Yaris or Up! Or if you don't mind a good older Corolla Quest. I drove one from PTA to DBN and passing Trucks and Buses on the highway will make you religious. But if you a City Slicker and that's the only place you will drive, why not I guess.

@@tinker2054 it's at least reliable. Renault kwid has a plastic sump with 3 nuts per wheel. Pretty much sums up the costs cutting.

Nah you can get a Sandero, I don't think the Etios is much better at safety and looks that the body would crumple up

At least the Etios has a 4 start Global NCAP and Latin NCAP safety rating. If I remember correctly, the tinny, cheap as chips Renault only managed to muster 1 star. Rather my safety over looks and features...
