Aloha Everyone! It’s Lynn with iHula Hawaii, bringing the hula of Hawaiʻi to you.
In today’s video, I will teach you how to ‘ami, which simply is a rotation of the hips in a circular motion. There are two directions to do the ami in: ‘ami right & ‘ami left.
Let’s start with an ‘ami to the right that goes in a counter clockwise direction. This is the traditional direction of the ‘ami.
Using the four points of the clock, starting at 9, 6 3 then 12, we will rotate our hips counter clockwise using those numbers.
Let’s begin with our hands on our hips, knees bent. We will begin by shifting our weight to the 4 points of the clock: 9, back at 6, 3 on the left and to the front at 12. Repeat 9, 6, 3 & 12 , 9, 6,3 &12.
Now let’s smoothly connect them going around and around.
The key to the ‘ami is keeping your knees bent and separating your hip movements to keep your upper body from moving as well,
Now from the side you can see that the posture remains straight and the hips circle around. You’ll also notice that as we come to the 12 o’click point, we are not pushing our pelvic area out rather just closing the ‘ami is a straight motion from your left hip to the the right.
Turning forward let’s try again and ‘ami 2, 3, 4 - really using your knees and your hips - continue your ‘ami and we’re all pau.
Now let's learn to ‘ami left: going in a clockwise direction, we will hit the points of the clock with our hips starting at 3, 6, 9 and 12.
“Ami left, 2, 3, 4 ‘Ami left 2, 3, 4.
