Aloha Everyone! It’s Lynn with iHula Hawaii, bringing the hula of Hawaiʻi to you.
In today’s video, I will teach you how to ‘ami, which simply is a rotation of the hips in a circular motion. There are two directions to do the ami in: ‘ami right & ‘ami left.
Let’s start with an ‘ami to the right that goes in a counter clockwise direction. This is the traditional direction of the ‘ami.
Using the four points of the clock, starting at 9, 6 3 then 12, we will rotate our hips counter clockwise using those numbers.
Let’s begin with our hands on our hips, knees bent. We will begin by shifting our weight to the 4 points of the clock: 9, back at 6, 3 on the left and to the front at 12. Repeat 9, 6, 3 & 12 , 9, 6,3 &12.
Now let’s smoothly connect them going around and around.
The key to the ‘ami is keeping your knees bent and separating your hip movements to keep your upper body from moving as well,
Now from the side you can see that the posture remains straight and the hips circle around. You’ll also notice that as we come to the 12 o’click point, we are not pushing our pelvic area out rather just closing the ‘ami is a straight motion from your left hip to the the right.
Turning forward let’s try again and ‘ami 2, 3, 4 - really using your knees and your hips - continue your ‘ami and we’re all pau.
Now let's learn to ‘ami left: going in a clockwise direction, we will hit the points of the clock with our hips starting at 3, 6, 9 and 12.
“Ami left, 2, 3, 4 ‘Ami left 2, 3, 4.
Mahalo for tuning in today to iHula Hawaii. Please subscribe, click the bell and give a thumbs up if you’ve enjoyed this video. Come back next week to learn a new hula with me, and we’re going to be using the ‘ami in our new hula. Until we see each other again, a hui hou and aloha.

Just wanted to thank you for these videos. I grew up dancing hula in Hawaii but moved away. Now I’m in college and am trying to reteach myself in Pennsylvania. This makes me feel connected to my culture.

Aloha Journey~ mahalo for subscribing and for leaving a positive comment. I love that my hula videos are bringing a bit of Hawaii back into your life in Pennsylvania and you're enjoying connecting to your culture. Is there by chance a Hawaii club at your school? I actually have ‘ohana in Pittsburg:).

Thank you so much for this and your hula hands videos, it’s great to see how to do them correctly instead of hoping I’m doing them right 😄 They’re great for practicing 😃

Mahalo Karen for sharing that you have missed my hula videos. It's been a bit of a challenge scheduling to shoot between my work and dealing with our weather patterns. But I got a new hula coming next week so I plan to be back on schedule. How did learning the ‘ami go for you?

Yes, the weather has been a bit difficult to film in - either super hot and muggy or rainy. Thankfully I got a few sunny days in this week. Glad you're still following! Did you try to do the ‘ami?

Aloha Lynn, This was maika'i loa. I have been watching your Hula videos for a while. I'm blind so I have a little trouble following along when you put the steps together and doing the gestures. Can you do some more Hula videos with audio descriptions? Basically what that is is describe what you're doing at the different parts of the dance. I don't have a halau near me so you're my closest thing to a kumu that I can have. I don't live in Hawaii and the closest studio or halau near me is two hours away. Mahalo nui loa for doing what you do. I have an idea for more hula videos. I think it would be cool to do a hula to my yellow ginger lei. Maybe, you can do some hula kahiko. I'd love to learn the hula to the chant E Pele. E pele. Sorry this comment is so long but I had a lot to say. Mahalo again. Ahuihau.

Aloha Cassie, Firstly, mahalo for sharing how you have been able to learn the hula from my videos despite your physical challenges. That's so amazing and really touched my heart. Thank you also for your suggestions. I actually have "My Yellow Ginger Lei" on my list of what I'd like to share on iHula Hawaii. As far as kahiko, my training is in ‘auana so that's what I'll be able to share and teach. I didn't think your comment was too long. I appreciated it. I hope you enjoy this next hula series coming up!

'ami - ROLL the HIPS in a circular motion. Watch the feet and the knees.. knees are to ROLL/ROTATE in a circle..You'll know if it's done properly 😉 Show this to your Kumu.
