You have to feel for Brosnan, really. The guy was clearly made for Bond. Eon chased him for years, too. After Goldeneye he was given mediocre or sub-par material to work with but he always put in a good shift. I believe Casino Royale was supposed to be his (in much the same way Goldeneye was supposed to be Dalton's) but they decided to reset. The Bond series is as interesting for its 'what-ifs' as it is for the entries. Die Another Day is daft as a brush, but I enjoyed it because, like Moonraker, it knows its ridiculous and just runs with it.
@Apanblod3 жыл бұрын
I think Tomorrow Never Dies is a solid action movie and TWINE is on par with, if not better than Goldeneye. Brosnan isn't my favourite, not just as Bond but in general, and I personally consider him to be one of the weaker elements in the first three movies of his tenure as Bond. Not Die Another Day though..
@Grandmastergav863 жыл бұрын
I'm not a particular Tarantino fan but I would've been curious to see the version of Casino Royale he envisaged (with Brosnan in the Bond role) he often spoke about that. I agree with you, Pierce was a good choice for Bond but the scripts for his films were mostly terrible. I enjoy Goldeneye and The World Is Not Enough, the others of his not so much. Roger Moore will always be my favourite Bond but again he suffered from the material he was presented. Dalton is excellent too, the only passable one IMO is Lazenby.

Brosnan has been screwed over so much in his career. First, he loses Bond to Dalton when NBC uncancels Remington Steele. Then after he saves the Bond franchise, the producers fire him without notice in their rush to reset. Die Another Day was an over-the-top homage to 40 years of Bond. refreshing to see an actual review instead of just an excuse to bash everything in the movie! saw this when it came out and it was the highest grossing Bond movie ever. its aged poorly cause it cant withstand the scrutiny of a rewatch, and Bond movies need to be timeless. it was shortsighted of the film makers to be so topical: nobody remembers that the villain changing his face wasnt a big deal cause FaceOff had just been a huge hit, or that the slow-motion was a trend from the massive success of the Matrix, or that the "fully loaded" car chase is just trying to keep up w/Fast&Furious, or that act III is probably so over the top cause they wanted to be escapism for the audience after 9/11. I cant hate this movie cause up until Iceland it had some really good ideas, it just didnt follow through. Say what you will about the Madonna song, but it did its job: did well on the charts and played everywhere, which brought attention to the movie. Its a shame that it distracts from the super clever new idea of using the opening credits as a story telling device. I personally liked the Vanish, it was a believeable gadget from Q branch (since 20yrs earlier they were producing submarine cars). The CGI tsunami just seems to overshadow the rest of the movie and make things they would have gotten away with tainted. Also, the opening wave is not CGI - they got specialist surfers in Maui, and Frost didnt take Bonds clip from his gun, she took out the firing pin. And the VR simulation is an homage to the huge Goldeneye n64 video game, which was groundbreaking for 1st person shooter games

This is one of those films that had its reputation perpetuated by an ouroboros of hate. It's one of those films that the "common wisdom" states that its just one of those "bad" films. No reason to discuss it. It's just bad. Idk, as films from my childhood age I find rediscovering them to be highly fascinating. Maybe it's because of the state of blockbuster today but many films from the late 90s and early 2000s have a different lens over them now. They feel retroactively refreshing. As I age I believe less and less in ironic enjoyment. It's a razor thing line imo. Do I like something because it's "lolz bad lolz haha look how bad it is" or do I like something simply because it manages to entertain me? The latter, I think. Die Another Day is just a goofy good time imo. It's big, extravagant, incredibly silly, and has some genuinely well done action amid the dated VFX. Brosnan is doing the lords work with the material here and overall this is the kind of big, dumb, and SINCERE kind of blockbuster we hardly ever get anymore. And I never saw DAD as the worst, even as a kid when I accepted the narrative of its badness. For one, it's simply more entertaining than films like Live and Let Die, Diamonds Are Forever, Quantum of Solace, The World Is Not Enough, and Spectre. And I like it better than some of the acclaimed and beloved films in the series like Skyfall - which I find to be a dull, cynical, lifeless film that muddies its own themes with half measures narratively speaking. Serious and gritty Bond peaked with License To Kill and Casino Royale imo.

Better than Spectre and possibly Quantum of Solace. This movie looked so silly, I didn't even go to see it in theaters. Then when I saw it on cable, I was laughing at how silly it is. When he goes surfing on the ice waves, I was like, this is technology gone bad.

DAD is definitely his worst (not through any fault of his own), and it is among the worst of the franchise, but unlike something like Spectre, it's never boring, and for that reason it's probably the best of the bottom tier Bond films. It's crazy to me that Casino Royale came out only four years after this movie. It feels like they're from different decades. For this brief period in the early 2000s (and partially the VERY late 90s), all Hollywood blockbuster/action movies seemed to have this aesthetic, this overblown "trying to be cool" ridiculousness. I'm talkin' Ben Affleck Daredevil, Halle Berry Catwoman, etc... and then, before the 2000s were even over, we just decided as a society that we were DONE with that shit lol. It was like the movie equivalent of disco, once it was over it was fuckin' OVER. I feel like The Dark Knight was the final nail in the coffin, but Casino Royale came out two years prior to that and it's just as much of a stark departure from the cheesy 2000s vibe.

I get that some James Bond films are just popcorn movies, designed to be fun, and I have no problem with that. But I draw the line with Bond in space, invisible cars, and a sci fi virus. I draw the line at things that definitively do not and cannot exist. The Bond films and novels were not meant to be works of science fiction like Doctor Who. I also take exception to Bond films that seem to be made for 13 year old boys. We have movies like that. They're called comic book movies. Bond novels and films were always meant to be for adults, and when they veer off too much into childishness, I have to take exception. That doesn't mean there can't be a quip here and there or some levity, but if I'm rolling my eyes, we've gone too far. Bond is not a comedian. He uses humour to maintain his sanity after a harrowing experience. Some say Brosnan got the short end in his films by way of writing. I content the films were tailor made for him. Goldeneye felt like it could have been written for Timothy Dalton, my favourite Bond, but had some innuendos and quips added in to make the film suit Brosnan more. I can't argue that he was good with the quips and the silliness, even if it wasn't my thing. I saw him in Remington Steele and Mrs. Doubter and it made sense that he seemed far more comfortable wooing women and cracking jokes than behaving like an actual spy. I could have understood Bernard Lee's M being somewhat tolerant of Connery's flirtations toward Lois Maxwell's Moneypenny to some degree because they're both guys, and there's a bit in From Russia With Love where Bond is being recorded by M telling Tania about a liaison involving M and M shuts off the recording and sends Moneypenny out of his office. But I don't at all buy that Judy Dench's M, after giving Bond the go around in Goldeneye about being a sexist, misogynist dinosaur, would tolerate Brosnan's flirtations with Samantha Bond's Moneypenny. That made zero sense to me. But the Brosnans weren't made to make sense. They were made to show a more "fun" side of Bond. Everyone's going to have their own interpretation of the character, despite Fleming's objections, but you could argue DAD went too far with the science fiction, like NTTD, and rather than being a film that adults could watch, it was purely, by the director's own admission, a movie "that would be acceptable for their (teenage boys') peer group." Lee Tamahori was intentionally, like Joel Schumacher with his Batman movies, making films for adolescent boys. And while Brosnan's tenure veered more in that direction in general, Die Another Day was more like a Marvel movie than it was a Bond film.

You are ignorant. At 45:30 you claim that they fired Pierce Brosnan because Die Another Day got a "bad" reception. That is simply not true. First, DAD did not get a bad reception. It had a mixed response, some liked it others didn't. Overall, the critics were far more positive to DAD than the previous two films. You can go back and read the reviews from 2002 if you dont believe me. In fact, 1 year after the film, the studio announced that they were happy with the film and was planning to continue with Brosnan for the "foreseeable future". The first draft for Casino Royale was written for Brosnan. The backlash against DAD happened much later. Around 2005-2006. The fact that Lee Tamahori was arrested dressed up as a woman had a huge impact. Also, Halle Berry's reputation had hit an all-time low after catwoman.

Overall, yeah it was a cheesy Bond film. But let’s be honest here, does anyone see Bond movies as serious? As for Brosnan, he was getting old. At least he got four movies. Gave us a cheesy Bond film. At least this movie made me laugh at the bad parts. Like “How about Gravity?” While this final part is not about this movie, the whole idea of a big business buying out the news media in Tommorrow Never Dies is a good message that has aged well, and in all fairness, it was a situation similar to the Living Daylights Bond movie because there were provocateurs trying to put us into a World War III with Chinese Communists, similar to how there were provocateurs trying to set up a World War III in The Living Daylights between the Soviets and The West.

Goldeneye is up there with Goldfinger as the best Bond movies. I really liked Tomorrow Never Dies and how it has a strong take on the media as a weapon of mass destruction if fallen on the wrong hands. Brosnan is the best Bond to date since Sean Connery, IMO. Roger Moore was a sociopath. George Lazenby didn't have enough screentime to be praised. Dalton was a bit of an overkill during his two movies. Brosnan was classy, resourceful, light hearted, but serious, all at the same time. And he could do all kind of stunts without feeling out of place (except for Die Another Day). I truly value his four movies as Bond. The best action movies of the time.

I like this film. Far more than the dismal Craig era. This is the last true James Bond film as far as I'm concerned.

Can’t lie this movie is so cheesy but it’s fun to have playing in the background so you can look up from your phone every 5-10 minutes and laugh your ass off. Goldeneye is so good i wish the other 3 were as good as Goldeneye. Used to watch all 4 Brosnan Bond movies with my Cousin growing up so we have a lot of nostalgia attached to them

I was one of those who claimed forever that the film was the worst in the series. Over the years, my love for the film has grown tremendously. This film had the unfortunate task of competing in the era of MTV, big stupid CGI action movies of the day and the film is clearly a 2000’s film through and through. So, everything that has been said about this film in a negative aspect is all true. That being said, those same people will defend Bond escaping in a moon rover in Diamonds are Forever. Will defend the voodoo magic in Live and Let Die and have no problem with Baron Samedi magically showing up on the front of the train at the end of the film when he had been killed already. They defend the space laser battle in Moonraker. Will defend Bond swimming in a fake alligator in Octopussy or him wearing clown makeup in the same film. None of those really campy, stupid things seemed to hurt their love for THOSE films, but the invisible car is where they draw the line? To me, I’d much rather watch an entertaining failure rather than a well constructed snooze fest. Thank You for making this video.

Besides being an enjoyable guilty pleasure movie, die another day’s ridiculousness made Eon entirely change their approach and giving us Casino Royal, the best Bod movie of all time. So, at the very least we must give die another day that credit.

bro, anyone who negatively critiques the Brosnan Bond era movies, needs to go home and cry harder. They were the epitome of what a 'James Bond' flick is. They were the closest to the original Connery era in terms of gadgets, girls, guns, and most important of all, dialogue/snarky one-liners . thoroughly enjoyed your video

I must have seen Die Another Day more times than any other Brosnan Bond Movie. Maybe I have a soft spot for it. I like bad movies. Maybe because I am a writer myself and I love writing the ridiculous. Or maybe because it's pure stupid fun and it pays tribute to the ridiculousness of the previous James Bond movies.
