IKEA Furniture Makeover: How to Paint IKEA Furniture, Hamptons Style!

Love the Vivid white shade for the cabinet. What color walls in the same room would you choose for the walls to create a Hamptons Style please?

You could choose another shade of white like "White on White," nice crisp whites rather than warm whites, or a very pale grey like Dulux "Brume" or "Tranquil Retreat" and don't forget you can ask for quarter or half strength to make them lighter/more subtle. I would love to hear what you end up choosing!! 😍

I’ve just bought a couple of white Billy bookcases, jan 2020 in UK, stupidly mismatching the two depths available, but I’ll manage. However, that’s showed me they use different materials for the backs on each depth. The 28cm deep has a smooth finish, whereas the 39cm deep has a rougher, micro bumpy surface. Late in the day I decided to paint the back, and didn’t want to muck about priming, at some extra cost. I tested a little corner, thinking If my paint didn’t stick I could rub it off. It didn’t even scratch off! Anyway, I’m happy to report that ordinary matt emulsion wall paint sticks to both types of back surface, without primer, but does need a couple of coats. I used a foam roller. To be clear, I’m not painting the laminate, but the back surface of the shelves. I thought I’d post this because I’ve noticed a lot of people wondering whether priming is necessary. Lots of people think it is for painting laminate, but if you’re lazy like me you can get a pop of colour by just painting the back.

That's great Bella Bee, thanks so much for sharing that!! :) What a great idea to paint the back for a pop of colour, I love it!! And yes I think with IKEA furniture it can be confusing because they seem to use different materials and have even changed the materials they use on each product over the years. But yes, I haven't had any problems with my paint at all, and the spots in the corners where I used a touch of spay-on primer have been fine too. Thanks again for sharing your experience! :) xx

Is it possible to prime instead of sand or is the sanding necessary? I'm planning on painting a Billy bookcase. Also, any other advice if using milk paint? Thanks.

I am not 100% sure - you could give it a go with just primer and not sanding, but maybe test a small section first, maybe the underneath side of a shelf, and then give it a good scratch when it's dry to see if the paint peels off. If not then you're good to go! But the good thing about sanding is that it should open up the fibres of the wood a bit and help the paint and/or primer to adhere, so I'd say it would probably help to sand it first. If you can, ask someone in your local hardware shop, hopefully they can give you some solid advice!! 💗 I found this article which might help a bit: www.architecturaldigest.com/story/options-for-painting-wood-furniture-without-sanding It seems to say that if you mix milk paint with a "bonding agent" then you don't need to sand first. Or you could give chalk paint a go which may work too! Let me know how it all goes, I would love to hear what how it all turns out!! 💜😍

Wondering how this is holding up? I’m goi g to paint a very slick ikea dresser, and will sand and use primer. I curious to know how you’re went without primer.

Hi Deb, it has held up really well, it still looks pretty much perfect. My pieces were a wood veneer though (a veneer of real wood), which is why I just sanded and didn't need primer apart from in the corners where it was too hard to sand. If your piece is very shiny I think sanding plus primer is definitely the way to go. 👌 I have another video where I tested levels of prep and different surfaces, it might be helpful too. I’d use chalk paint that way you won’t need to sand! Just paint!
