Alocasias are basically spider mite brothels! Also, maybe you should shower the leaves and THEN spray with your mix. Doing it in the reverse just washes off the treatment before it has a chance to work?

Another technique that works very well for me is “sterilizing your potting medium”...many times fungus gnats and other pests can come from the soil and potting mediums we bring into our homes...try microwaving it for 60 seconds to kill anything crawly before you pot your plants...of course make sure the soil is cooled first! This is CLUTCH to avoiding pests especially gnats!

I had spider mites in my cabinet too! I think after almost 2 months I’ve gotten rid of them all 🤞🏽 What I did was take them all out every 7 days, spray them with alcohol, dish soap, and water mix, spray down the whole cabinet with that same mixture every 7 days as well, clean it and they’re gone. It is a process though! But it’s doable! Good luck 😊 ALSO! I think something that helped me was realizing that pests will unfortunately always be around. We’re not bad plant parents if our plants get them. It’s just about controlling the situation but like I said, we can do it 👍🏽

I know many people prefer to use less toxic means, but if you are careful and wear gloves and a mask, a No Pest Strip hung at the top of an enclosure overnight works well to wipe any and all pests out. Re-wrap the Pest Strip tightly in foil and sealing in a zip lock bag keeps them well for re-use. Do not run the fan during it's use and leave the doors open in the morning to air the cabinet out after removing the strip. I am not sure about plant sensitivity for some of the rare plants you own, but I have used this method for years and have never lost a plant. It would also reach/kill any bugs hiding in the nooks and crannies of the cabinet. I don't own a cabinet: I used to put the plants in a large tote with the strip in a mesh bag taped to the lid of the tote, again, only overnight. Learned it from an old plant enthusiast in the 70's. Be sure to repeat treatment based on the particular pest's life cycle. Really large plants or groups can be placed in a warm garage and tented with plastic to serve as the enclosure. You can use outdoor chairs to throw the plastic over to create the tent. What I find so amazing is it is winter where I am and I suddenly had aphids on my Ming aralia. I bought no new plants or supplies and did not repot it. No change in location in my home. I have been isolated at home. I swear bugs just materialize out of thin air! Lol!

The clarinervium you need to be carefull plating it in orchid bark. The bark can sometimes hold up soooo much water and the roots stay wet for a long period of time. I recommend planting the clari in a "pond basket". The little holes in the side help ventilate the roots! Also when you use liquid fetilizer only use very small orchid like doses every month / 2 months! They really don't like fertilizer i've learned :) .

I think once a collection gets large enough spider mites are just another part of plant maintenance. I get them occasionally, I don't stress too much when I find them I don't even quarantine them just take the offending plant and spray it down. If you check your plants often enough they shouldn't become a huge problem and it seems like you're quite diligent when it comes to your plant care. I just want to reiterate that they are practically unavoidable. I use green cleaner every couple of weeks in case you're looking for a product that doesn't stink like neem. Also, nothing is impossible when it comes to nature. Good luck and don't stress! Edit: Just got to the thrips part, just wanted to recommend spinosad if the neem doesn't do the trick.

Oh, and the new growth is actually recommended to cut, because they like to hide inside unfurling leaves, but I didn't dare, I just keep wiping 😅

You may need to try some beneficial bugs in the green house, and if you don’t already have a tiny fan in there to circulate the moist air... definitely get one. Good luck!

This reminds me of the time I discovered ear mites in my cat's ears. I had to put special meds in their ears, clean everyday. Then gave them a special bath, it got rid of them but one cat got sick and had to take the cat to the vet. She's ok but that was a nightmare. Bugs. 🤪

Honest question, why do you spray the treatment and then rinse it off? I've treated with a similar solution but didn't rinse it. Should I have?

I usually don't rinse, but it makes the plants more susceptible to burn to leave it on and I was doing this in the morning instead of at night. Basically, it was just to minimize risk of burn. The alcohol in the solution would have killed everything on contact!

I had (have?) thrips outside... They infested a huge ficus tree and weirdly were reproducing exclusively there... Some flew down to bother the other plants but it wasn't terrible... I don't know what happened but when winter started they vanished

Thrips are my nemesis. I might try that captain Jack’s.

Omg. So sorry your cabinet was attacked. That’s the absolute worst part of plant parenthood. You got me checking my cabinet tonight!

Sorry about the pests! Hope you got them under control. Scotch makes and outdoor heavy duty version of mounting “Velcro” that should work for your light. They are very strong hold for 10-30 pounds depending on need!
