I just noticed that the bed box did not have any ventilation holes? Bottom is a big continuous sheet and the sides are also pretty high, higher than the mattress. In that setup the mattress can not breath. Imagine sleeping on the mattress, with a blanket, the mattress will soak in some moisture from you when sleeping on it. And that moisture should go away during the day (also one reason why covering the bed directly after waking up is not the best routine). Not having a sheet under the mattress, just the strips or at least sufficient holes in the bottom sheet will help air moving through the mattress, letting it breath and de-moisturize during the day. Not ensuring that might result e.g. in mold under or in the mattress.

Quick note from an ex Home Depot lumber employee: you can’t always depend on the cuts you get from the store. Each store has a “+/- 1/8”” sign up near the saw because nobody in the lumber department is trained to make precision, furniture grade cuts. You might find someone with some previous knowledge, but then again you might get someone who doesn’t know which side of the line to cut on. Also, If it’s busy in the store the likelihood that you’ll get good quality cuts is much lower since the employee has to get to all the customers in the store including the pros, contractors, etc. All that to say, If you’re planning on getting this stuff cut, it might not be as accurate as you’d like and you should probably go when the store isn’t as busy (like a Tuesday at noon)

This is fantastic! I've been fantasizing about a indoors workshop bench (assembly, electronics, model-making, but no woodworking/sawdust) using a rack shelving type of thing, with a wooden benchtop, and storage above, with lighting above the work table. I might abandon buying metal racking and adapt a loft bed for a workshop desk. Thanks for the awesome ideas guys!!!

First … LOVE THIS VIDEO. The concept of showing how to do DIY house projects like this is fantastic. Minimal tools. Great use of space. Easy techniques. It all appeals to the weekend warrior / beginner crowd. A couple of questions. 1. How did you convince the person at the home center to dk precision cuts? My local stores say they won’t do that. Is there a special way to ask? Or is it hit and miss? 2. This one is about the bed itself. Are you sure that pocket screws will hold up to the dynamic forces that will occur with a bed? Beds get shaken around climbing in and out, and get movement while sleeping. Is there any concern about long-term durability with pocket holes? I realize that what your build is far superior to ikea, so probably not a big worry.

1. I asked nicely and marked all of the boards myself. I tried to make his job as easy as possible. Even offering to make the cuts so he could go on break. 2. Josh here, yes I am. This will be the 7th bed I've made, 3rd elevated bed. All of them have held up to normal use and non-normal kid use. I've never had a problem. All of the beds have lasted for years. @@Iliketomakestuff Here's my thoughts as an employee of one of those home centers. It's definitely a good idea to mark the boards yourself. You are MUCH more likely to get the cuts you want. And it's probably for the best that the employee did not take you up on that offer. Those saws are supposed to be ONLY used by employees who are trained to use said saws. It's a safety hazard (and possible lawsuit) for a customer, even one as skilled as yourself, to use one. At the very least, the employee would have likely lost his job if he had taken you up on the offer.

@@kotadawndragon +1 to not allowing customers to use the equipment. It's a liability thing because if a customer got hurt using the eqipment, insurance would NOT be happy! Liability is also why the cuts aren't "precision". That disclaimer is made so that if the customer goes home and the cut isn't exactly as they wanted, there's wiggle room for the managers to refuse a refund. Basically, sure, we're happy to help but the employees are generally NOT experts in the departments they work in and are just doing the best they can. Finally, one thing to note is that the cutting is a service to be nice to customers but if you're abusing it by asking for tons of cuts, then that's an issue. There's LOTS of customers in the stores and only so many employees. So if an employee is spending lots of time doing cuts instead of all the other jobs they have to do, that's hurting other customers that also need help and also hurting the store because those customers will be upset and not shop there as much. It's all a balancing act and so PLEASE don't abuse those services.

I have built a bunch bed for my daughters and cut the stairs on the plywood. However, climbing up the stairs without shoes hurts, 3/4 is really narrow for stairs. I ended up adding some extra wood to make more foot space. If anyone is doing something similar the keep that in mind.

This looks great, but in my opinion the desk is a bit shallow if you're gonna use a computer on it... Because the computer and monitors take up quite a bit of room... I'll look at the design (and customize it) for my next bed... Then it'll suit my needs and I'll upload it when I customized it (it'll take a while to customize since I am not the best at using 3d tools)

Hi Bob. I want to make a full sized bed frame using castle joints and hardwood instead of plywood. Any tips? Do the inside dimension match the mattress size or does it have to be a hair bigger to allow for differences in the matress manufacturer?

My only concern is the support on the ladder side. Unless I am missing something it appears as though it is held only with pocket screws from the bed to the ladder/wall. I am sure it is plenty strong but wear and tear over the years or any racking from climbing in and out could weaken it.

If the whole thing is anchored to the wall, which it should be, then racking shouldn’t be a problem

The entire bed frame is a box held together at many points. The ladder side is mounted to both long sides of the bed box, the bed box bottom, the lower stringer, the desk stringer, the desk, and the desk's bookcase. I tested it before I let my son on it, and the only thing that squeaks are the bed slats, they should have been screwed down.

Awesome.👍 I was in the same spot about 2 years ago. It is absolutely rediculous, what most shops dare to charge for a double bunk bed! I sketched up on paper. And made a heavy duty version out of 7,5x7,5 cm and some other lumber including some storage. Our two and the neigbours "approved" the heavy duty several times so far. Maybe you can think about some reinforcements for the double bunk version. Can highly recommend it.

Not really ridiculous once you factor added cost for labor, cost of running a business, cost to cover warranty, cost to cover liability and possibility of lawsuits if anyone gets hurt using your product, etc. Add you're paying for convenience and time savings as well when getting a commercially made product... The cost of the materials is a small part of what it cost them to provide the product versus you just doing it yourself. This only really changes when they do mass production but most businesses aren't producing these on that kind of scale. Companies like Ikea are one of the few that do and even then they cut corners with lower cost materials and simplified designs. While anything really custom would be the opposite of mass production and cause the price to skyrocket to far higher prices than these... So, some things just make more sense to do yourself rather than expect someone else to provide it because that isn't always practical or cost effective to do it commercially...

Things like supply chain issues are world wide and some things, like Baltic Birch Plywood, are not going to be really available any time soon, forcing compromise and forced adapting, which effects a lot of businesses... Basically, being reliant on the world markets has it consequences... So there's going to be more that we may have to re-evaluate how we choose to do them...

Is it attached to the wall? I'd like to make a loft bed with wardrobe under it, and, being an adult, I'm afraid it'll be too unstable then it's a narrow bed. Should I attach it to the wall, or should I make a bookshelf or something going out, making it wider in one corner?

I tend to get a lot of things cut at home Depot and here are a few things. One, they do not make precise cuts and if they are off you still have to buy the sheet. I usually round up to the nearest inch or so. Second is that they have a minimum length that needs to be on either side of the blade. If I remember correctly it's a minimum of 12in on either side. This is just my experience at my local home Depot in Oregon so others may varies but just some things to keep in mind.

I'm sure it varies from place to place. But I was sure to mark every cut before we loaded it onto the saw. It helps them and gives you a place to confirm before cutting. And you have to make sure they don't try and start the saw with the blade touching the wood. I've had that happen too.

Absolutely brilliant, but I have two questions… I didn’t see any rounded edges. Not only a must to make a project more finished, but I would think expected with this level of design. The other critique is the built-in side ladder needs wood extension to make the, “rungs” more comfortable to place bare feet on. Other than that, it’s perfect!

Can anyone explain the benefit of pocket holes over a normal butt joint? The only I can think of is no visible screw heads.

@@Iliketomakestuff Well, pocket holes do allow for some wood movement. So advantageous for things like attaching table tops, cross grain wood movement situations, etc. While you can use them to fasten places you may not have full access to do a butt joint, etc. anymore... You can use pocket screws for clamping pressure, like for panels in grooves for glue ups that you otherwise can't clamp or get the proper pressure applied...

Great build! I do wonder though if there was a way to design the desk to be closer to the window to utilize the natural daylight instead of needing lights during the day. Plus a brighter colour in the desk area would make it feel bigger and airy. 🙂

The room is 8 feet. There are 32 inches from the top of the bed slat to the ceiling in the room. Some mattresses are thicker than others.

Really cool how you made multiple designs! On first sight I'd be a bit worried about the third, "regular" bunk bed variant, though... Feels like the top part only standing on two parallel sheets of plywood wouldn't be strong enough to sideways forces, especially with kids climbing around on it. Then again, I've never built a bunk bed like this, so this is just an impression from my - admiddetly always over-building - brain.

I do wish the prices for plywood would come down here in Sweden, currently low grade pine plywood thick enough for this would cost about $350. Birch plywood I would actually use to build something like this, at least $800, plus about $100 for delivery because nobody anywhere near me actually stocks the stuff.

What kind of paint and primer are you using. I’ve used latex house paint on beds before and it scraped off easily and things stick to it. Any tips?

Look into the furniture paints. They are specifically an "enamel" paint which hardens quite a bit more than latex/acrylics.

For some odd reason, not a single hardware store in my town seems to offer cutting services. If you can find someone in the department to actually acknowledge you, they just stare, like you asked them the atomic weight of cobalt. (58.9, obviously)
