At what point was it a scam? He let his insurance policy expire. 6 months car insurance policy is the standard thing here in States. If you let it expire and drive without insurance they'll suspend your license and registration, then you'll have to pay $600 fine and then you'll have to file with the state proof of insurance for 3 years. Not exactly a scam, but in many Canadian jurisdictions, a house developer will bury in the contract, if the value of the house increases before it's built, they can charge you the difference, or refund any deposits. Two great things from Russia - Mayuri Dance group in Petrozavodsk and Leonid and Friends band. Check them out Sam if you didn't know about them. Talking about car scam - I paid $29000 for a Nissan Patrol the dealer confirmed everything is great - I trucked it in like a fool without inspecting - because it needed 5 hour travel. Found out it had 300 faults and had to sell it 1/2 the price. Then a local dealer sold me a Ute - looked great only 231k on the clock - within 3 months engine blew up and now it is sitting in a shed never to be driven unless I can afford another $10000 to buy an engine and fit. So if local dealer can do that imagine how much others will do that if they know you are not from the country.

@michaelmckelvey5122Ай бұрын
Yes, and it is the reason why so many building companies 'go to the wall.' It is very hard to always get the prices right and there are always extra hidden costs not seen at the point of contract. Just look at HS2 in England. The cost of the train line just mushroomed over time, even the government got it wrong and the whole scheme has cost some 84 billion pounds and the line still does not even reach central London. They say that quantity surveyors are some of the most important people in a project as their forecasting or better to say bad forecasting can lead a company to bankruptcy.

Thanks for sharing your experience. In Norway a very common scam is when you pay for everything before the work is finished and one day the company is suddenly gone and on top of it the work that is done less than half is done very cheap and poor quality. Do you have to buy car insurance and car tax in Russia? I wonder why as a single man, you have built such a huge house? On my own, I could live in something much smaller and would have finished it all off by now, even a small one bedroom house would be enough for me on my own. As for scamming, even in England with the English language, people are being scammed all the time. Unfortunately, I have little sympathy for you scammed friends. Many years ago, we went to the county court as my Polish wife had signed a contract and I thought we stood a good chance of winning. However, as it turned out, the judge told us that under the law of contract, it does not matter if you can read the contract or not, the contract is still valid. So even in England, a country with long legal traditions signing a contract you do not understand gives you no excuse not to be forced to comply with the terms. I suppose we all have 'to live and learn.'

Insurance of damage caused by my car to another is mandatory. This is a payment for the repair of someone else's car or loss of health. The price depends on the power of the car's engine, region, and driving experience. My car is 158 hp. in a big city, about $ 80 per year. Full insurance of your car or home is voluntary. Cheap cars and houses are usually not insured.

This just highlights the necessity to speak the language of the country you're moving to. People seem to believe if they just spoke English they would get by everywhere because everybody on the planet speaks English, or so they think. Before I moved from Germany to Australia I used to watch a program on German tv about German's emigrating to other countries. Many of them returned home after just a couple of months and language was the main reason. Even though I think I'm going to end up in Australia permanently, I'm learning Spanish, French, and Russian. It's not very fast, not very efficient, I'm on my own using mobile phone apps, but if I planned to move to Russia I'd certainly ramp up my efforts to learn Russian long before I did the actual move so that I would be proficient in Russian when I arrive in Russia, similarly to the level of English I had when I arrived in Australia.

No one will touch such a job, after the fact, as all the money has been spent and now the cust. is desperate and NO WAY would another contractor come behind another not knowing what has been done and give a guarantee so, tough luck. Municipal fees for services that arn't wanted - like special water services, garbage collection fees if you don't use garbage collection, government ID fees for government IDing purposes, amazon splitting up orders into multiple payments if you buy them all at the same time resulting in bank charges for the purchases due to the number of orders they are split up into when buying a lot of items at the same time. Property tax assessments WAY higher than the actual retail value of the house so that taxes on the property will be more, Drivers for perfectly working hardware not being updated to work with newer OS - so you need to buy a newer version of the product with the driver even if they could just have made a new driver for the old product as easy. These are the ones that are most annoying, these are sort of "Structural" scams by government and businesses. I am not actually sure if amazon somehow benefits from breaking orders up to qualify as a scam but it definately hits me for petty extra especially on low value purchases that it feels like a mini scam cause it inflates the price of the transactions by $1 or $2, when you already paid a monthly fee for free shipping they still manage to make a per transaction fee in there. Also in general rather high application processing fees are usually scammy its like it takes 5 minutes to review a document and make a decision but they are billing say $75 to look at the application that is a page long, sort of feels scammy.

The Russian Unorthodox Church is manned by FSB agents. It has been run by the secret police ever since Stahlin brought back the Church to inspire Christians to fight his former NAZI allies. Russia is devoid of the love of Jesus. That is what happens when you have atheists running your churches. You should stay as far away from German philosophy as possible. Both Marxism and Nazism were birthed based on German philosophy. It is a great way to start a death cult which describes modern Russia best.

The main thing that I personally don’t understand about their situation is how the 50000 USD that they "invested" is all or most of the money that they had. Even if they had not lost it to the scam, how were they hoping to sustain themselves in Russia in the long term? They have mentioned that they had plans to start a business selling some food products, don’t remember what exactly it was, but if they just automatically assumed that this business endeavour would work out and would almost instantly be able to generate enough money for a family of 5, that is just extremely naive.
@SamsRussianAdventuresАй бұрын
I think they decided to leave the US rather than decide what they will do in Russia. Many people are doing that now, it’s why I wanted to highlight this. I had a good chat with them and we discussed some ideas that they have. We need to try and reinstate their faith in humanity and get them to a place where they can think clearly and move forward.

What is common in the U.S. is for the contractor to walk away from paying for supplies, leaving it to the lumber yard to go after the property owner. We became aware of this practice, and elected to pay the lumber yard, directly. Well, this upset our contractors house of cards, as he was sinking the money into his own, McMansion. In the end, we recovered the most we could from his bond. The lumber yard felt cheated because they didn’t get a piece of it, although they knew what was going on, all along, And he killed himself in a motor cycle “accident”.

You can get legal help but as a start you can google for sample contracts for the particular transaction and get an idea as to what to watch out for. In the US I have found REVIEWS of sellers etc very helpful. There is also a system to find out about cases filed against or by people which also helps. Another step is to think about what could go wrong and make notes of them and guard against them in any agreement you enter into. You can also share those concerns with an attorney or third party advisor. YES if the contract is dealing with something high value - get an attorney. If there are local laws regulations etc. that can affect your contract, hiring an attorney maybe the best option.

I had some great times in Russia (Moscow & Kaluga) but I'd never have gone to live in Russia without having Russian friends to help (well they actually organised everything even my job & visas before I went). As far as car insurance goes I just bought it at the border of Latvia & Pskov, was about €200 for 12 months all Russia unlimited mileage - I never needed to claim so I dunno how good how the actual cover would have been in the event of theft or fire. I head that a "mark" or a patsy is known as a goose or a duck or something similar. I had an Armenian fella try some BS on me tryna sell me something because he found out I smoked cannabis & must have thought I was daft.... I knew a few local wealthy Armenians and they head about it before I even knew he was tryna scam me (I'd given him no money yet) and he was brought into the shashlik shop late one night when I was in eating after a night drinking - they dragged him in and open hand slapp d him 3 or 4 times while he apologised but I was confused as to what had gone on until afterwards but they wanted me to slap him too but I was in the middle of my meal and drunk not knowing why he was even apologising! There are notaries everywhere in Russia- never sign a contract without a notarised translation! The only scam that happened to me in Russia was by a Ukrainian girl who tried to trap me into marrying her.... I never married her but she did give me a handsome & healthy baby son so it wasn't such a bad deal in th end. I had to leave Russia after the sudden death of my best friend and some serious legal issues (I can never return without risking charges)..... Hope your house goes up smoothly! Dasvedanya.

@@SamsRussianAdventures I probably didn't pay close enough attention to the video because I didn't realise that the Lexus theft was so long ago. I came across your channel while I was still living in Kaluga in 2022 or early 2023. (You replied to 1 or 2 comments I posted ages back). My first visit to Moscow was summer 2001 - just a 10 day visit, but it was quite an experience. Crime was still a big problem, I remember the Merc that we were chauffeured around in had 30mm+ thick windows, the doors were so heavy that they opened & closed by button on the door or from the car key/ remote, it was a 1995 or 96 S600 that did about 10mpg going down hill! Supposedly it was 'bombproof' not just bulletproof. The drivers & CP guys were all armed. When my friend's Dad was in town he'd travel with 2 or 3 cars in convoy - all this was supposedly for general security not some specific threat or wartime precaution.... I was 20 at the time and thought it was the coolest way I'd ever traveled. BUT- It was very ostentatious/ nouveau rich. For a moment I thought my Russian pal was joking when he said "yeah so the cars are always dark grey or black - cos it's not flash & doesn't draw attention .... But blue flashing lights and speeding down tram lines and thru red lights doesn't make us stand out already? The trip blew my little London mind! I'd been told many a story about "trust me brat when we go to Moscow we do xyz..." I thought it was maybe exaggeration but it wasn't - Russia was a wild place around the Millennium years. I'm already nostalgic about my time in Russia. My first & only son was born in Moscow. (His UA born Mum became a Banderite in Feb 22 & since moved to EU). I think it's great that you've settled and made yourself a comfortable life. You're house is underway. You got your sh1t together since the Lexus was held for ransom. Will you have the house weather tight before first snow? I think updates on the progress of your house would be popular videos.things like heating system and insulation is interesting because winter means winter in Russia - so insulation, , Windows etc need to be high spec. Anyway I've written a million words again 🖋️ 🥱

That's terrible that they stole your car. Sounds like the car company was involved. That would never happen here in NZ, because they would get closed down by the law, and they know it. Plenty of car thefts in general, but I never heard of a car company behaving like that. Plenty of phone and internet scams here, almost always involving a transfer of money to overseas. If it was totally internal, they would be found and prosecuted. We have a big building company in liquidation at the moment, but I never heard of deliberate extras being charged on a house being built. I guess if I was getting some staining done, I would ask the price. Assume nothing. BTW, how did you get on with your engine warning light issue. Resolved yet?
