4:07: missing steps: You need to remove the screws below the fan, and one in the center of the logic board that needs the screw adapter because it is high and a normal screwdriver will not reach it. It is necessary to back up your information first, if you remove the fusion drive card you will not be able to recover the information from the 1tb hard drive. "loss of mmio space" kernel panic after installing macOS on new SSD: disabling PowerNap worked for me. Check that the adhesive sticks well and add silicone glue in the upper corners, some screens fall after a couple of days if the adhesive is not stuck well or a poor quality one is used. SSD adapter: buy the small one, not the big one, some SSD drives have chips underneath and the adapter will bend if you screw it in like in this video.

I did only the easy HDD to SSD swap on my 2017 iMac and the performance improvement is huge. I have seen several vids showing replacement of the NVMe SSD and have wondered what the benefit is. Isn’t it already reasonably fast? If storage space is an issue, can’t that be solved with a bigger 2.5” SSD?
@jani0077 Жыл бұрын
the speeds don't matter for most users, but if one is doing video editing or post-processing or anything that takes up a lot of storage space NVMe speeds can reduce time 3-4x (I usually export large studio sessions and on a mac pro we use pcie nvme drives, which cut our export times from 30 minutes to like 5 just by swapping out the sata ssd drives)

Looking forward to doing this tomorrow to my 2017 iMac 27" Quad-Core i5! I got a Feather M13 2TB NVMe SSD (no adapter required!) with a Samsung 870 QVO 4TB SSD. The Fusion drive was alright, but it just can't keep up as well. My MacBook Pro obliterated in terms of speed, the smoothness a NVMe provides. Plus, internally backing up to a 4TB SSD will be amazing. Also upgraded the ram from 8GB to 64GB. If you plan on keeping your device for a very long time, I highly recommend the upgrades!

Excellent video. My only suggestion is: when applying thermal paste to a CPU or GPU SOC, you put a pea sized dot in the center, and let the pressure of the heat sink spread it. You should never apply it in the "X" form as you did, and you should never spread it manually to the edges. Your thermal paste syringe will indicate how much to put on the CPU or GPU SOC by dots. You depress the syringe one full unit for each application. Obviously, on the iMac, for the smaller areas around the CPU, you have to use your own judgment. In this case, you applied it correctly on those units. The reason for the pea sized application is, when done the way you did it, there is a high risk of the thermal compound touching other electrical components as it expands beyond the limits of the CPU "walls". Thermal compound can conduct electricity and short out other areas of the motherboard. Sometimes this doesn't even happen right away, and over time you run into mysterious shorts.
@frostizz20723 жыл бұрын
I’m planning to open my iMac to clean and put new thermal paste
@lesgarten2 жыл бұрын
I disagree with what you are saying here. Most thermal paste is non conductive, or a whole lot of folks would have gotten into trouble a long time ago. There have been a lot of people study patterns of application and it doesn't make much difference. If you are using paste that is electrically conductive, you need to assess why you are doing that, is it necessary, and have you watched the videos of the guys who toast there stuff with it a la Liquid Metal. I spent a lot of time recently looking into folks who change out the thermal pads on 3080 and 3090 Nvidia cards. The heat sinks require custom thermal pads from Nvidia to do it correctly. There are a lot of folks who just remove the pads and get VERY thick thermal paste and goop the crap out of the Ram chips to contact them with the heat sinks. They slather it all between the chips. No issues at all because the paste is non conductive.
@TheMakingofChannel8 күн бұрын
I watched many videos regarding this, but as long as you put some on there, it could be a pea an X or the letter H or whatever. As long as there’s some paste on there everything is good. It just shouldn’t be the complete syringe xD all these tests showed a negligible difference in terms of temperature

One caveat.. make sure you don't yank the power switch cable out... I was pulling the speaker out and it snagged the power switch cable.. a quick fix with prying the button out, soldering and gluing it back in.. but don't make that mistake. Make sure you backup everything before doing all of this, you will need a Time Machine backup to restore your system as the Fusion Drive is split between volumes. I updated the NVMe to 1TB and the 3.5" drive to 4 TB then created a Fusion Drive with both of them... works great. I also upgraded to 64 GB DDR4 memory, it was like $20 more from 32 GB. Upgrading to Ventura bumped up the active memory usage on my system so it was a good choice. No processor upgrade, my i5 can clock up to 4.2 GHz from 3.5 GHz. More clock speed is better for the applications I run at this time, I have a server in the garage with 64 2.2 GHz cores and 128 GB of memory for any heavy lifting applications I want to write.

I was able to upgrade my 2019 27” Mac to 2TB SATA SSD, 2TB NVMe SSD and 40 GB of RAM, but the Core i9-9900K upgrade didn’t work (black screen). Tried 4 times. I have a Core i5-9600K that I was able to put back in and it works. Do you know why the i9 won’t work? Is there something I have to do to the BIOS or anything in preparation?
@jamesaltonfilms4 жыл бұрын
@@MGTechPro It was 100% user error. I had to try 5 times. 3 with the i9-9900, 1 worked with the i5-9600 and then I tried again with the i9-9900 and it worked. I can't believe how easy it was to have the processor slip. The pins bent and I had to bend them back. I even bent the metal bracket that acts like a spring to lesson the tension on the mobo to work. Sorry to bother, was in a panic.

Be careful with cpu !! Don’t tight the screws !! I bend my 7700k thank god I fixed it

How did you bend the cpu?
@DannyNtarlas2 жыл бұрын
@@MGTechPro I start screwing very tight the cooler and just like that I bend it :/ so I fix cpu with my fingers XD and after that I re replaced the cpu but this time didn’t tight the screws until the end and now it works perfect

No thermal paste on GPU Ram modules. Either a Thick paste specially for such applications or thermal pads 1mm. You now have a GPU temperature issue I am sure.

Saludos.

Hi friend, I have bought the same ssd systems as yours, but I have a problem, I do not see the Nvme ssd drive in the disk utility, how did you make it appear? thanks for your help!
@oskarrodriguezmanso15554 жыл бұрын
@@MGTechPro Good afternoon friend! I already solved it, I directly inserted the mvme ssd in the mac and also a sata ssd to replace the hd disk. The solution is the next: (Found thanks to Samgung evo ssd mvme disks) When you turn on the mac again, you must enter the commands command + option + R and not command + R, since this first creates a function in which it starts all the hard drives that are integrated in the system. In this way both ssd appear and you can delete them to put them in apfs, and install catalina. (In my case I used a timemachine backup that I made before changing the imac components) Regards, and thank you very much!

Do you know where the mic terminals? I did it as same like you, but my imac doesn’t have mic function now T_T
@MGTechPro3 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is the flat ribbon cable at the bottom. Probably it is hidden under the logic board. Check min 3:58 of this video for the Zif cable location
