Everyone PLEASE try this game yourself first. You can get a ton out of it (and probably see the credits) in much less time than watching this video. If you are the type of person excited to hear FP talk about this for 10 hours then you will probably find Immortality be one of the best games/movies/multimedia/literature of all time. If you've ever side-eyed Ulysses or Citizen Kane or Ocarina of Time and their fame, this is also your chance to actually experience something medium/mind/ground-breaking first hand rather than through foot-notes, history, and second-hand analysis; don't waste it. And I'm not trying to say it's flawless or gas it up too much: you might find its mechanics a bit clunky or opaque and its narrative/pathos may not connect with you; that's okay too. Feel free to refund it and come back if you hate it. But like eg. Outer Wilds it's a shame to see people spoil themselves and trade a truly unique experience for a "neat video essay" (no matter good, as FP's stuff always is).

I hope you dont mind me pinning you, but i agree its very important people give this game a try! Its got that x factor. And the blindness of the first time experience is very important.

Why does everyone think I have the money and time to go play a random, obscure video game off air when I can just watch my favorite KZbinr talk about it instead? I don't even own a computer or device that can hold and play it at all.

@@takemywordforit4128pretty sure this comment is directed at people with the means to do so but simply choose not to, meaning they have a working pc/laptop and the funds to pay for the game. For you, you could perhaps look into a no commentary lets play of the game before watching? It allows you to experience the game yourself without a pc or the need to buy the $20 game. And if you didn't realize it's a 2022 release and is available on steam. It's also not that random or obscure... Many people have played and enjoyed it already lol, it has 1.4k reviews on steam, so it's not like it's totally unknown or unheard of. 🫡

As a woman who used to be in the entertainment industry, this hit hard. Women are notoriously not treated very well in Hollywood, and although SA can happen to anyone, it's been so ubiquitous to aspiring actresses that it has its own term: the casting couch. Such a cutesy sounding name for a horrifying reality far too many women face. Whether that was the intended message of *_Immortality_* I don't know, but I personally interpreted it that way, with [spoiler characters] literally embodying an eager young starlet and the horrors she experiences at the hands of others, constantly being tossed around by the Hollywood machine, used up, and discarded.

It’s funny how Carl greenwood was put through similar if not worse levels of sexual harassment as Marissa was. And unlike her, he even exhibited visual discomfort. Story of the industry. It’s power exploiting the powerless, an idea that goes beyond gender.

Regarding the part where John and Marissa secretly film a love scene -- I think Marissa's comment has less to do with "demons can't couple" and more to do with John's line "make it look like she's ****ing him," to which Marissa says "can she?" After all, she can "shapeshift." Meaning: she can change her equipment, so to speak. That's why John jokes "that's a different movie."

Just want to point out: Olga asks Goodwin if he’s a buyer, and he says “Not tonight, I’m a cop.” A nice little sly reference to the fact that he has been a buyer before. Also, the emphasis on FORM in Minksy, well, the Ones take on the forms of motal humans, who take on the FORMS of the characters they portray. Constantly retreading until only the form remains. Minksy is a gold mine of themes for this game. [sleepy typos fixed]

"Her Story" has become one of my favorites, editing errors and all. I love how genuine your reactions and takes are. The Theories are interesting, revalations are well paced and the skits were funny as usual. It took me 3 days to get through this video, and I enjoyed every moment of it. Every avenue is explored, but in a way that enhances the source material, not bogging it down. In short, you're a real one Mr peacock. I genuinely wish you all the success, and hope that "The One" doesn't curse you with immortality, just with those sick ass dance moves.

I notice that the choice of the poem The Walrus and the Carpenter is a story about predators tricking their prey into believing that they are going to go on a fun adventure before breaking that trust and consuming them, so the inverted version putting the director through a more overtly sadistic version of the audition process reads to me as a commentary on predacious men in Hollywood using their position to coerce young women into non consensual activities for the sake of their career. I feel like there's a clear critique of the film industry being made with that scene and the way that the misogynistic tendencies of these predatory men inform the stories they tell, such as casting the naive young girl that they exploited sexually as a temptress intent on seducing and destroying men. It's in these reversed scenes that I think we see the true version of the actress, the one who experienced these things and who is generally hidden from view in favour of a more idealised public persona. The one who gets to go back to those moments and take ownership of them, inflicting revenge on those who inflicted that trauma upon her.

The only interpretation I disagreed with is when you say in the Two of Everything analysis that The One wants to keep collecting vessels. I think that was their motive initially, to connect with the human/mortal experience, but at that point in their current awareness I interpreted the lyrics to reflect their mindset after so long. "Two, too much." I think at that point The One was exhausted, broken down, and lamenting their immortal existence. They wanted a break, a long one, therefore asking The Other One to burn them. The One knew they'd come back eventually, but needed a hard death to take a long reprieve. This makes sense to me considering how many times burning is brought up as a way to kill immortals, clearly undesireable, but wished for in the end.

It's kinda wild you consider Her Story your weakest video; it had been sitting in my watch later for a while as my first introduction to your work - I liked it so much I became an instant fan and binged the rest of your catalog right after! It's so awesome to see these enigmatic works peeled apart, to me I can enjoy the art even More by collecting these tidbits I may have missed or misunderstood at first glance.

The point about how Larry/Andrew Hessenberg's actor doesn't seem to "embody" his character in the reversed footage (compared to Robert/Ambrosio) did make me think. As far as I can tell, Larry doesn't seem to share his character's reprehensible views, despite Durick's comments, but IMO he still puts up a fine performance of a Weinstein-esque sleazebag. Same with other Two of Everything actors and crew, who seem to have the most professional and healthy attitude of the three movie crews, vs Marissa and Durick overworking themselves literally to death. I think there's something to be said about how you don't need to deeply resonate with your role/your art, or have to put your full soul and lifeblood and suffering into embodying it, for the art to be "good" or "valid". This is something The One is tragically incapable of understanding, whether because of her trauma inherited from her stolen memories, or her inherent nature as a thing that only interacts with humans by eating and taking and possessing. (For the record, I don't think Robert Jones is meant to "deeply resonate" with his character Ambrosio, in terms of sharing his personality and faults. I meant more that he was putting a crazy amount of energy into the performance, vs Larry who seemed a lot more casual and just-clocking-into-work about it.)

Thank you for making this point. One of my favourite things about Immortality is the running critique of the fallacies around "Great Art" and "Great Artists", especially the trap of believing that the 'best' art can only be created by self-destructively pouring all of yourself into it. Like you say, trauma and narcissism are the fuel for that.

!!!!!!!! the one’s dance sequence is almost definitely a reference to maria’s dance from metropolis 1927. it’s a really close resemblance in regards to costume, movement, framing, etc. maria (metropolis) was also part of a body double plot - specifically, there was a robot built in her image who took advantage of the human maria’s status as a religious leader to sew chaos and hatred among the people who looked up to her. although metropolis’ maria never died or was possessed, and ultimately the one/marissa end up in a drastically different place, I definitely still think the basis of the one’s relationship with marissa parallels the marias’ relationship with one another. both were innocent women whose bodies, voices, and perception in the public eye were hijacked by a seemingly unstoppable inhuman force, it’s just that one story ends with the alien being being killed and the other story ends with the alien being absorbed. fuck’s sake the one’s self insert in their final film is even named maria

@@flawedpeacock glad I could introduce you! it didn’t occur to me while making my initial comment but metropolis is also a restored film like marissa’s works - a lot of it was lost during the ww2 era, and the ”full” version that we have now (approximately 95% complete) only happened in 2010. if you watch the whole thing in one go it gets really obvious with the drastic variations in sound/video quality :’3

Great video! Another Picasso reference I noticed: one of Picasso's wives (and his first consistent muse) was named Olga Khokhlova, who Picasso cheated on with another woman, Marie-Thérèse Walter (who was a teenager when the relationship started). Not sure of their veracity, but there are loads of stories about Olga harrassing Marie-Thérèse and Picasso about the end of their marriage. Lots of those stories really sound like the way the Olga in Immortality contacts Minksy, so another slight reference to Picasso! Plus I really like the idea of two mistreated muses teaming up to get revenge on their abusive artist, especially since all of Picasso's real-life muses get overlooked, when all of them were talented artists/creatives in their own right!

It's doubly interesting when you consider that The One and The Other One (two: TO and TOO, a trinity of only two parts, or possibly just two points of that triangle with the artist being the remaining part of the structure) are literally Muses in the mythological sense who collaborate with one another to create art on their own terms, taking on the roles of the people who previously took inspiration from them and inevitably consumed, exploited and destroyed them.

@@musicobsessive123 not OP but I do cross-stitch too! If you're just starting out, I'd avoid fabric canvas and go for specific plastic canvas meant for cross-stitch. This is for a few reasons- all the holes are open and visible, so you don't have to worry about misalligning your stitches or using a magnifying glass to check your work. Because of the size of the holes, you don't need to reduce thread size either, you can just use full size embroidery floss. If you want patterns to start with, especially if you're a beginner, I'd look at 8 bit sprite art or similarly simple things. I practiced with the classic tamagotchi sprites when I was starting out :-] Good luck!

in the Two of Everything segment, i noticed that in some scenes with dark lighting, The One’s sheer dress kind of looks like muscle fibers! it kind of supports ur idea that The One is the “skeleton” and the vessel the everything else. Maybe in the scenes where The One is lit up and you could see through to their body is meant to signify the moments where The One is “in control”? Oooo, The One was in a lit up space when they were burnt!!

When talking about the forms of death the One has experienced, you say crucifixion is the only one not related to asphyxiation. But one of the ways crucifixion kills is when the victim no longer has the strength to hold themselves up, gravity pulls their torso down and the pressure of their arms being pinned up compresses the lungs and leads to asphyxiation. So ultimately, crucifixion isn't the outlier. The guillotine would be though.

I just want to highlight: your vid on "Her Story" was great. I've played that game numerous times with different people and every single time a new theory emerged. And after we were done, the more we discussed it, the more plausible the theory became. Watching your video was like that too, which made it exceptionally authentic. I'm grown up now. I don't have much time to gather with friends and play games such as these, then dive deep into theories for hours on end. I have severe nostalgia for those simpler times and what you did with that video is give me another glimpse into those times. So thank you for that. It was not a weak video by any margin. And this one is fantastic too. A titanic effort, probably the most comprehensive analysis I've seen on the game. You brought up so many things that I had never heard or noticed, it was extraordinarily enjoyable.

2:23:13 YES SLAY THE PRINCESS It would be absolutely incredible if you did a video on this game, maybe after the release of the pristine cut !! Edit now that i've finished the video, I really feel like in 2OE especially that hug between Marissa and John, that part of Marissa, the one that died in the field by The One, came back in her body, so The One was in both John and Marissa but a bit of Marissa was also in Marissa. Marissa having taken in what the one went through as she lived on in her body, so not quite the dead French girl but maybe the memory of what The One saw in her. I got that from when The One said they brought her back after seeing the negatives of Ambrosio. Brought her body back sure, but also brought Marissa back. So when they're hugging, it's not so much Marissa and John but The One and that pert of Marissa fused in with The One. To me, John is fully dead and never brought back since he got his throat ripped out. Also I just realized, there's almost 30 years between Minsky and 2OE, John is in his 70 when they filmed 2OE, since he was in his early 40 when he took the role of Minsky. I'm guessing that's why they said that only his death was reported and made it so 2OE never finished, while Marissa only "disappeared". After your incerdible 10 hour love letter to this game, there's still so muwh to be said But thank you for making me discover this game and Sam Barlow!!
