Immortals: Fenyx Rising DIDN'T Live Up To The Hype | Review

Immortals: Fenyx Rising is a sleeper game coming from Ubisoft releasing right next to Cyberpunk 2077. Sadly, it hasn't received much media attention or consumer hype and that's unfortunate because after my preview I felt Ubisoft may have something awesome here. Unfortunately, after 10+ hours this foray felt all too familiar for a new IP and I put it down. I do believe I'll be an outlier for this one, but as always, do check out other reviews!

Definitely feeling this. The first person I had to resurrect, I was forced to take so many side trips into vaults, or locations far apart from each (or both) before taking on the vaults. I don't really have complaints about the main vault, I like it because it has that old school dungeon feel. It's just by the time I get there, I've already burnt out on dealing with the 'fetch quests' to give much of a care. Honestly would be better if they cut it back some.

Botw is different from both of these games in that the pings aren't predetermined and you don't have to go to a specific place to do them.

But skill up has also recommended games that he gave very little explanation to like BPM, then another reviewer made a video that was more negative that was WAY more comprehensive. Sometimes people put out poorly justified reviews (the content of the review, not the existance of the review itself). It happens to all of them, and it doesn't mean they are shills.

I think Fenyx's first outing was actually pretty decent, they were just different enough and took on a verticality that botw lacked. I'm a fan of gension impact so the combat was pretty similar, I just love all these different open world games that have interesting traversal systems. It's really nice how immortals lets you level up gliding, swimming, and even climbing to use less stamina. I am legit hoping for a sequel because then they can expand more and really iron a lot of these things out. It lacks polish but there's a lot of good things in here.

I appreciate this review. You told why someone would like it, even though you may haven’t enjoyed it as much. As a Switch user, I’ll take an open world with swords whenever I can get one lol. Plus I’ve been waiting since it was announced as Gods and Monsters. Even if it’s a 6-7/10 I think it’ll be worth giving it a go for me. It’ll be interesting to see the puzzle aspect and my feelings on it but thanks for letting us know. I can see why someone might turn it down though. Like anything else, might not be for everyone. I got it about a week ago and I like it a lot. I’ll give it to you, it is definitely not as engaging as BOTW. I couldn’t put BOTW down, I was hooked from the get go. I can put this game down and return to it a few hours later. I don’t love the story and how frequently it pops up, but it’s not annoying enough to turn me off. Overall, I love the puzzles and how many there are, I enjoy the world and the combat is really fun. Upgrading and gathering mats is fun too. I personally enjoy the vaults, and explore more than I follow the story. I hit up the main quest when I feel I’m at a wall. Overall, great game.

More than likely Skill Up is a bit influenced by his recent disdain for Ubisoft's stagnant formula. Especially since Valhalla was more of the same in his eyes. So he's going to be much more positive since his last Ubisoft experience left a bad taste in his mouth. Matt doesn't seem to be impacted by whatever charm that Skill Up was put under by Immortals.

Honestly for a game that was borne from the idea of an Assassin’s Creed Odyssey glitch, I think this turned out pretty well. Considering how well it’s doing too, I wouldn’t be surprised to see some type of improved sequel upon it at some point. I think the other part for me liking this game is that I understand it’s geared more toward a younger audience with the type of humor and storytelling it offers, and the other half is that it kind of falls in line with my nostalgia for other action platformers and the humor reminds me somewhat of Ratchet & Clank.

Its an impressions in my opinion unless you complete like 60% of a main story..if you only played 10 hours of demon souls and did the first 2 arch stones you would miss some of the most atmospheric and challenging gaming moments ever..if you only played god of war for 10 hours you would literally only experience 2 realms and not play against some of the best bosses in the game...10 hours is likely just enough time to learn the basics of most games and introduce the premises..most games don't really start being an actual challenge till post 10 hours.

I would not respect a review that played only a small amount of a game as I have mentioned in examples already. Imagine a film reveiwer watching first 10 mins and giving a verdict ...or only watching season 1 of game of thrones or something and "reviewing the whole series"...its ridiculous it would not fly in any other media

​@@jass9571 If the story matters most to you, it sounds like you should be watching a full play-through on a Twitch stream or a Lets Play on KZbin. I'm not sure how early he received the full game, but I doubt most reviewers can comment on the quality of the entire story for a new release so soon. Besides, even if he beat the entire game, it probably wouldn't change his opinion. 10 hours or 50 hours won't make a difference if it isn't clicking with him. You need to play the game yourself to decide if you like it.

Yeah I prefer your reviews because you flesh out the why so much that I feel like I understand the reason you didn't like it and I feel like I know if I would or not. I had this preordered but I canceled it and I will wait for it to hit a sale as even in the demo I felt the puzzles were a bit off but couldn't put my finger on what it was until you said they were all like that.

Matty, thanks as always for the content. I would say if you dont feel in position to review the game don't do so, just provide a clear opinion piece of why you did not finish. You not wanting to finish the game does not mean the game has a mortal problem, games are a sum of their parts and these conversations need to be nuanced in order to have clarity. Reviews for this game are seriously all over the place. ACG, Skill Up, and Yong Yea loved it and Mr.Matty didn't even want to play it for some strange reason. One reviewer on Metacritic said the puzzles were brilliant and some of the best he's seen, while another said the puzzles were awful. I think KZbin game reviewers and video game reviewers in general get jaded from constantly playing games all the time.

I LOVE the game, the puzzles are hard and there are different ways to do them..... it’s obviously a taste thing based on if youve played a lot of similar games, but since I haven’t, it’s a into to the traversal/puzzle/combat/fantasy open world rpgs

I like many of your vids, but this seems like a lazy review to me. I get that not every game works for every person, but if your criticism of this game is simply too familiar, then almost any game would fall into the same category unless it broke some new ground, which is quite rare. I just want to know if it's fun or not.

Huge fan of Origins and Odyssey. This game is like a standing ovation for Odyssey, an animated odyssey, if you will. Immortals Fenyx is one of the best games Ubisoft has ever made. Only finished the lengthy prologue and I have a feeling I'm going to enjoy it much more than AC Odyssey. Panning out to be one of the top 5 games I have ever played in my middle-aged, balding life. I love Matty's reviews, even though I disagree with half of his negative reviews, he still brings up good points. That being said...Matty, you are dead wrong about this game. Immortals Fenyx Rising is nothing short of amazing.

Ive played breath of the wild and still like this game. There are like three thing similar to zelda not as big of an issue as everyone is claiming. It's going to be different then AC2 and I would defiantly recommend it.

Rather than copying the Shrines from BOTW, the Vaults seem even more similar to the Domains in Genshin Impact; they have the same color palette and similar 'mysterious floating ruins' aesthetic.

I poured 80 hours in this game and dlcs and I legit cant find the energy to keep going , the combat never changes, the puzzles are everywhere and its a typical ubisoft game im not buying their bs again

Probably ubisofts best game so far, i'm not exaggerating since it feels like when i first played jack and daxter on ps1 and that's not a bad thing. Comparing it too games like zelda when you play it on xbox or playstation is a compliment.

Same here for me. I loved the game..... but the shrine move the block puzzles gets really dull seeing it repeated over and over again. They really needed more variation on said puzzles. Apart from that Ubisoft nearly nailed it.

I picked it up on Gamepass, played it for two hours, bought the dlc and Switch version so I could continue on the go with the cross save system. It's scratching that Zelda itch while I wait for BoTW2

Polygon got it right when they said it started out tight and focused and then turned into ‘Open World Game’. I really wanted to love this, but all that running from point to point and ‘fun’ activities every few minutes really makes it a stop/start experience. It’s not intense enough to be an action game, and it doesn’t have the atmosphere to keep you invested in the world. The puzzles are fine, and the battle rooms are challenging if repetitive, but it’s all just so cliche. I do think the story and voice acting were interesting, but at no point does the world feel believable. And frankly, a lot of what we have here is PS2 level, at least gameplay wise. Except this would’ve benefited greatly from a Jak 3 or even a God of War approach. Great review. And you’re not an outlier. There are a lot of mixed and negative reviews. Most of the positive reviews are basically damning with faint praise: oh, UBISOFT made a game that’s not uber bloated. I don’t think anyone’s going to remember this a few years from now.

I liked AC Valhalla, I was expecting more out of it though because Odyssey is one of my favorite games of all time. So I know I'm gonna love this game. I was expecting Valhalla to be a bit more like Odyssey, I just hope the next AC game is made by the same team that made Odyssey. Valhalla wasn't as funny, the story wasn't as gripping and it was all over the place, I didn't get attached to any of the characters and the main character wasn't as charismatic or as likeable. That said I loved the gameplay

I liked Origins and Odyssey more than Valhalla. Feel like Valhalla was supposed to be the game made before Origins. Too many gameplay aspects of Origins and Odyssey that were superior to Valhalla.

this definitely looks up my alley and im super hyped to play it here in the next few days, i was pretty salty ign gave it a 7/10 but valhalla 8/10 cause cmon... valhalla was a broken buggy immersion breaking mess, and this is super polished compared to that, im glad matt acknowledges a lot of ppl are gonna like this game even tho it wasnt for for him, thats huge to me, i think im gonna love this game, doesnt overstay its welcome, 25-40 hours of content depending on how much you wanna do, its definitely gonna hold me over til cyberpunk comes out!
