In order to protect the ear from loud sounds, the sound has to first travel into the ear and get amplified by the ossicles in order to reach the hair cells and be interpreted as excessively loud. Only then will the stapedius and tensor tympanic reflex activate. You have to eat the poison first in order to know it is poisonous kind of logic. Great video as always !

Damage to ear in loud sound - because the tympanic reflex(attenuation reflex) has a latent period of 40-80ms. So when a very loud sound traverses the external ear in a very short period of time(as in bomb blast) the attenuation reflex(tympanic reflex ) does not get to work there by damaging the ear.

Stapedial reflex lasts for10s and after that stapedial reflex deacys and regenerate effective if sound level70_100db above person's threshold.sound louder than it may cause muscle fatigue or during the period between reflex decay and regeneration loud sound reaches OHCs and can cause demage. ❤love your lectures..

For stapedial reflex to occur, sound must reach inner ear first and then action potentials to brainstem. So very loud sound can damage inner ear hair cells

Ma’am my answer might not make sense😅 But i think because of prolonged exposure to the loud sounds, maybe the muscles which were pulling the ear ossicles could get fatigued and relax, causing damage to the hair cells in the cochlea. By the way your videos are really good.... and helped me clear many concepts. Thank you so much!🙏🏻🙏🏻

I think acute loud sound damage our ears because it can't initiate the attenuation reflex which prevent us from damaging effects of loud sound, it occurs before its latent period which is 40 to 80 m.sec so i think that if sound reaching earlier than latent period it will damage our ears.

Corrrct...but sound will reach ear rather has to reach inner ear to initiate the reflex...so if it’s too loud..it will damage the ear

Within the fraction of second at which acute loud sounds ,like.. bomblast..are vibrating the ossicles... the attenuation reflex doesn't happen quickly..it takes time...hence..acute loud sounds are harmful.

Actually it takes a bit time to generate reflex for contraction of these muscles, in case of acute loud sound there isn't enough time ti generate reflex so it damages ear. May b this is the reason of question which u asked?

maam, that was interested topic, thank u for sharing. actually i have one question to ask i.e acoustic reflects will help in protection of inner ear when loud sound is stimulated, but to stimulate acoustic reflects (i.e tensor tympanic and stapes muscle) the sound has to pass inner ear first (according to reflects pathway) so, how it will protect the inner hair cell as sound is already expose to inner ear before stimulating acoustic reflects?

Wow...that’s a beautiful question. Your question is a partial answer itself. Reflex takes some time to act and that’s why very loud sounds do damage hearing. Also chronic loud sounds do damage hair cells themselves for the precise reason you stated....

Ya but nature or creator of human body mind could have directly placed air medium and protective sensitive sound wave receptors, simple ! Why to add fluid to cause impedance and then to overcome that, again to add ossicles and middle war cavity complex structure strange ! Anyways its a good video!

Anywhere curving in body - increases surface area…cochlea is in a small bone but because of curved structure it’s enough to have adequate length of membrane for pitch discrimination
