Greeting guys, thanks for tuning in. Today I'll be showing you the basics on how to get your transit empire up and running. I'm using a large USA free roam map in the year 1900 in this video. I find that starting the in year 1850 is a little bit slow in terms of gameplay pace.
When starting I tend to pick a city/area that has a lot of resources and other cities relatively close by without too much in terms of obstacles presented by the terrain.
I will start my transit empire by picking two cities and linking them together with a basic rail connection.
To support the rail lines I then create a decent intown transit network to get people around the city and to the train station. The trains run at a high maintenance cost and it's best to try and fill them to capacity as often as possible.
Once the in-town lines are setup I'll connect one or two nearby towns to the cities that have rail connections with a simple bus route - this is just in an effort to get some more people into the towns and using our trains/transit.
The towns will start to grow in size once they start getting goods and people so we'll be quite profitable soon enough, but unfortunately the way we set ourselves up in the beginning we'll be running a negative balance.
I've done quite a bit of tinkering think this the best way to get a really profitable empire up and running. I'm not saying it's perfect, but it seems to work well for me - hopefully it will for you too!

I bought this game a few weeks ago, having loved the original Transport Tycoon series back in the day. I was ridiculously excited about having a game that seemed so similar but with hugely better graphics etc. Even my wife got excited about playing it, as she loves Cities Skylines et al. But, oh boy was I disappointed when I tried to get into it. Every attempt had me reeling with frustration as I sank deeper into debt with no clear end in sight. The cargo system made sense but seemed to choke itself, making heavy investment into trains and long distance goods production hugely risky. Even passenger transport seemed lackluster... Basically I kept quitting after a year or so, feeling a little more deflated each time. Almost to the point of walking away from the game altogether. Then I found your KZbin channel... So now, on year 5, having paid back a whopping $8,000,000.00 in debts and seeing my little transport company thriving, I find myself (with the inclusion of my wife) needing to take some time to praise you for your very encouraging tutorials. Thank you, ImperialJedi! I am thoroughly enjoying the game now, having listened to your advice and basically borrowing like crazy and throwing caution to the wind. Albeit with some careful planning using your strategy tips. Your How To Start video should be the default "go to" for anyone new to the title. Keep up the great work, mate. You have an excellent balance of cheerfulness, excitement and intelligent delivery to your presentations. I'm also excited about this game. I've been a TTD/OPENTTD fan everysince 94' and i've been waiting a long time for something similar to come out. This is about as close as it gets with all the bells and whistles and new dynamics. I'm still on the fence about buying it because I wish there was an MP mode. I'll probably buy it eventually because I want to try it. I've read a lot reviews and a lot of ppl mentioned the same thing as you. I'll give it a shot i'm looking forward to seeing this game evolve or maybe another TTD comes out that's as immersive as this or better.

I know what you mean it is very difficult to earn money well. However if you do get very frustrated you can always save the game and load the game it with the built in mod no money and you will never need to pay for anything ever again.

Right!?! I like the obviously loud and energetic game tubers also, but I mostly listen to tutorials at night when I’m winding down or even going to sleep. A big pet peeve of mine are game tubers who have a chill style of speaking then a loud obnoxious intro or outro, or when the whole thing has a softer tone, funny, sarcastic, serious or otherwise, but then throw in a yell or loud clip here and there like they are trying to have a markiplier kind of moment. At least with the loud channels I know what to expect, but 15min when I’m getting lulled into easy listening an suddenly “aah! No way!! *loud sound effect at 3x volume*” that sucks imo. Anyway, none of that here! Great video!

Nice tutorial. Arguably quite a capital intensive way to start though. Another way you can start is by making internal bus routes for all the bigger cities (residential to industrial etc). This starts turning over a profit and growing the city populations without investing millions in a railway line straight away?

Recently I've decided to give this game another try and very fast I've realised that I totally don't remember how to play it ;-P. I've watched Your tutorial (actually, still watching it). Very good. Your setting doesn't look promising, though it really works. Thumbs up for Your ideas. One small "but" - instead of going early with 5 buses / trams per each line, I went with four - as a result got plain 0,5M profit in first profitable year (I think it was the second year). Now I think I would go with two, and add other two after few months - this could reduce costs, but would require little more work. Anyway, still: Your tutorial is really good.

Great vid- I am sure you know this but when laying sections of road and tracks if you use the M and N keys this will raise and lower sections which can often times lower your costs.

The best idea for junction signalling is to place the signals as close to the junction as possible, thus causing the junction to get cleared as fast as possible.

The ones going round don't stop there. Aren't you missing people who would like to use the train? Or are they walking over from the little bus stops?

A straight line between two cities not too hilly and with a siding in the middle so two trains can operate will make tons of profit as long as you have the cars full, it just requires two signals at each end of the siding to keep the trains going non stop. Shipping Crude oil to the refinery then fuel to a city in a loop also works pretty good, other methods seem pretty lame especially ships they dont seem too attract as much passengers as trains do even if they are serviced just as well with coaches.

I tried to use waypoints on a line but they would not add, is that a bug? The way I have it is a single platform station at a stone quarry that feeds into a loop, all of the stations are 1 platform, I have it go from Q>first construction material> second construct.>town>quarry, leading from stone to beginning of the loop is a 2 line rail, and the loop is one way(on the right), which then exits onto the left track, I also have a 2 wide main line that hits all major cities on the coast(it is also a loop, started as a passenger line), and I want to export some of the construction materials to a different city using said main line(its set up for 1 side to go one direction, and the other the other, however when I try to use the main line for the freight it keeps making the train go in the wrong direction, and no amount of signals or waypoints seems to help, when I tried to use signals it just messed up the lines, and any time I try to add waypoints to the line it just makes the line disappear and the train still goes on the original line ignoring the waypoints totally, help? Sorry for the long comment, I'm just trying to explain it right.

Could you please start the tutorial at the start of the game i.e 1850 and on Medium difficulty, because anyone including my dog can have success >1900 with $10mil. Try starting in 1850 with $2mil.

i have a question that is bugging me: can you set a mixed functionality line ?? i mean, those trains normally had some passenger wagons and some other freight wagons, so im wondering if you can set passenger stations and freight stations in the same line

You can. It does tend to be a bad thing to do though due to operating costs. Your trains will need to be about 50% or more full to begin making profit. Multi consist trains can be very hard to manage this, but it can be done. To do this you will need to proper station for what you want to pick up/ drop off. So every time you want to pick up passengers you will need a passenger station, and freight at a freight station. Stopping at multiple stations will reduce your frequency and thus hurt profits. You will also run into difficulty hauling enough on each train due to their power capabilities. For example my passenger lines may be running 6 cars and around 100 passengers. The most freight trains will be very large with over 200 capacity and filling a 320m platform. With multi consist trains you will need many more trains to handle this kind of load. As i said it is possible but not typically the best idea.

carljohnson621 it will have consequences. the maintenance cost for cars is very expensive and will hurt your profitability significantly. one thing that would work however is if you use those cars to transport goods between the cities of your passenger route. it would require an additional stop in each city hurting profit due to frequency but it might remain profitable.

Is it possible to relay cargo, Example if i want a train to pick up fuel and have them drop it off at a train station and then have truck stop near it and have trucks deliver the fuel into a city. if so, how do i tell the game to do that?

They do is automatically, as long as the truck stop is within the train station's catchment, and the truck route itself delivers somewhere requesting fuel, namely the industrial sector. The game can and will find a route getting any cargo where it needs to be if such a line exists, even it it has to route it through many different, otherwise unrelated lines to do so.

Hey, i think you have to put those bus/tram stops just before a crossing (never after). Just like in real life. The reason for that is the same reason why you put those signals for trains before crossings: so trams/buses do not block other traffic hen loading unloading. See: prnt.sc/d3u8gr

Why is it you build way to many Buss-stops. When you build a buss-stop you can see the area which is served by that stop. This costs way too much money.
