I'm really fond of the first line of 40k RPGs. Certainly played them the most out of any tabletop systems, because I always felt they did their job mostly well without getting too much in the way, while having enough mechanics to sink your teeth into. But we always had a good number of house-rules, which is another advantage of those systems - they are very conducive to hacking, rewriting and doing your own stuff, all without breaking too terribly (or, at least, it's easy to fix the breaks). And I actually think you are overestimating how ponderous the combat in DH/et al. is. You roll to hit, yes, but if the opponent can dodge, that's the first thing to be determined - if they succeed, surely all the other rolls aren't done.

I’d love to get a group together, but it’s challenging enough to get my local gaming friends together for a regular 5e D&D game 😢

I've played and GMed several campaigns in Dark Heresy and I agree with the criticisms of that game. There are also some extremely broken things in there, Fire for instance is hyper-lethal and the way "pinning" works (while giving use to utility characters who aren't combat oriented) can drag combat to a crawl of each side trying to unpin themselves while pinning the other. Also, Long Las builds can become one of the most absurd damage options in the whole game, once you start stacking stuff like Hotshot packs, damage buffs, etc you can basically invalidate anything's armor through sheer damage.

Ah pinning, they never did get that quite right in the rules. I’ll be curious to see if and how it gets changed.

You see, to me pinning, fire and sniping are the coolest things of the rules.

Thanks for the video. There are few mistakes tho. In the old 40k RPG, you roll evasion after the roll to hit. So if the hit doesn't connect, there is no need to calculate damage, criticals, etc. And the dodge roll, while too easy to be realistic, didn't represent people where dodging bullets like neo, but seeing the focus of the weapon coming towards them and getting out of the way.

At 2:28 you say evasion rolls were done after damage rolls which isn't true. These are done after a successful hit roll. Only after a failed evasion test or lack of evasion is damage rolled. I completely agree with the point you're making during that sequence, the game is much slower than other systems due to that. Though saying the evasion negates actions that already happened is overly dramatic. But yeah even then it is still slow. On the other hand I've heard some players be very happy to move away from DnD5e's "This guy shoots an arrow and it hits you" "Wait can't I dodge?" "No the dodge action must be done beforehand on your own turn". "????" Which can feel like it removes autonomy to players though it is very fast, just 1 roll to hit and 1 for damage.

Combat in D100 games is a tricky beast, as to stop your characters from whiffing due to their ordinarily low scores. So designers add modifiers to boost these initial scores and sometimes they seem to not know where to stop and everyone gets bogged down keeping track of equipment modifiers and all the other combat options these can also lead to spirited discussions as rules are re-read and checked, again slowing things down. WFRP 4th edition is probably a good guide to what is potentially coming with this game considering it's from the same people but from the Actual Plays I've seen the combat in WFRP can still be overcomplicated. I quite like Cakebread and Waltons Renaissance system as it has a nice balance between things boosting your skills but not so many as to overload Players and G.M's. Also, I really hope they do keep the game dangerous as honestly there seems to be so many ways to change a die roll and it can make combat somewhat anti-climatic, some sort of Fate and Dark pact options should be enough to help survivability whilst still giving that much-needed tension.

Wouldn't an easy fix to the old games be to roll to evade before resolving the damage and crits? Like in WFRP 4th where it's an opposed roll and if the defender wins, that's it, no need to resolve damage etc.

Interesting perspectives. Considering I'm writing my own D100 rules at the moment, I'd enjoy very much a summary of what you think D100 systems do well and what they often have issues with (regardless of GM and player performance obviously)

Awesome video and great thoughts! DH is one of my favorite games...I really hope WH40k rpg is as good or better than WHFrpg.. I think Cubicle 7 did a great job with WHFrpg.

There is much more math in fantastic 4 then the 40k rpgs. You are rolling for everyone single melee attacks counter rolling and seeing what the degrees of susses is. For 40k it's hit or miss And you can decide to try to avoid it for that turn or not
@GrimdarkGamers
@GrimdarkGamers Жыл бұрын
I can’t comment on fantastic 4 as I’ve not played it, but degrees of success do play a role in the 40k RPGs during combat. The degrees of success you score on your hit roll can override the damage roll if you roll lower than the number of DoS on your attack.
@coldrage20t8
@coldrage20t8 Жыл бұрын
@@GrimdarkGamers yes but the point is that there is much more rolling and and math then the 40k game. The thing that speed up the game is the low hp totals and no matter what if an attack hits deals at last one damage

I've always wanted to participate in a FFG WH40k campaign, but it's hard to find anyone who's familiar with it, let alone has a copy of the rule book...

I feel you. Very common problem! At some point I’ll probably branch into a 40k GM series and cover this issue but right now is a great time to get people interested in a new, up and coming game.

Running a DH 2e campaign at the moment and I can definitely say combat is a bit flawed, a bit of info overload and my players have lost one too many characters from being set on fire somehow, cuz fire is just kinda op

Very 40k lol, but yes fire is pretty damn crazy when it works. My players were Ordo Hereticus… a lot of things got burned down.
