I find it really useful that the guys have this nuanced discussion of beginner vs advanced training and I love it. Mike is really rational with his points. Also, about instagram dudes with weird exercises: regarding fitness and nutrition you can always say you have some unique / non mainstream way of doing things that works better. People will always fall for that “secret technique that works 10x better” in terms of marketing.

Great insight on back training from Mike! I’m intermediate and split back training into two separate days, thickness(erectors, traps, and rhomboids) one day then a lat day. I e found this beneficial because the back muscles move in different ways and allow me a better connection!

As a PT for 10 years I completely agree with Mike with the training idea. You really will be surprised how many people have very little motor control and understanding of how to move their body. I initially do squats with a client to gauge how they move (imbalances, ROM,etc.) but I virtually never program a squat for example with them initially because the connection with the movement simply isn’t there. You have to teach them how to move and connect with their body then progress to harder, more technically advanced movements. The idea go into the gym and do the three main lifts, should work in theory but doesn’t in actual application.

Paul, your shoulder pain could be exasperated by your traps highjacking your movements. Your shoulder could be getting pulled in which does not allow space to move, causing impingement and rubbing which then causes inflammation. Follow Mike’s advice. Get your traps out of the movement and keep your shoulders back and down. I’ve had the same problem for years and PT has been a savior for me.

I have to agree with mike about the whole not starting off with compounds for someoje who isnt wanting to be for example a powerlifter or strongman. Every client ive had for 1-2-1 pt i get them to first of all start with machines, learn the movements & not having to worry about staying stable the way you do with a freeweight movement. Thats what ive always done then moved onto compound movements further down the line. For first 3-6 months for me for a bew client its all machines, then start showing them some simple freeweight moves and just gradually getting to the more complex ones

Mike is correct on a beginner training. When you get certified to be a personal trainer such as NASM certified it teaches you first you must teach your client balance and compound movements. They have to learn how to feel first. Later add weights. It's a great training tool!

YOUR PODCAST IS SINGLE HANDLY LEADING THE WAY AT BREAKING DOWN THE RACE BARRIER THAT EXISTS IN OUR SOCIETY TODAY. The day we will successfully conquer racism as a society is the day we can openly and freely talk amongst one another and acknowledge the FACT that there just are certain differences that exist from race to race. PERIOD. YOUR WAY IS THE ANSWER LONG TERM FOUAD. I THANK YOU FOR HAVING THE COURAGE AND THE PLATFORM TO BRING TO LIGHT WHAT I'VE KNOWN TO BE THE TRUE SOLUTION FOR YEARS!!! Im with you all the fucking way...this is the exact opposite of racism...these are a group of men that speak openly and candidly in the hope of it bringing us all together and moving us up on the chain of evolution to finally get past this God damn ignorant racist bullshit that still exists all over North America and the world at large. You keep kicking ass and never keep your mouth shut Fouad...your instincts are true and trustworthy...if you feel it to be the right thing, trust that it is and forget all those who oppose you, as they are the true racists that are fueled by ignorance, stupidity, and/or plain hate. Keep fighting the good fight bro, this United States Marine and CPA Professional has got your back 100% all the way. Marine Mike 🇺🇸 💪
