I actually tried to get back in to Runescape a few years ago because I had a friend who was playing it and my brother had gotten back into it. I assumed my old account from the mid-00s was dead due to inactivity, so I made a new one. It was a Runescape 3 account, but I avoided the p2w stuff and ground a bunch of skills past 40 over the course of a month, and I was enjoying myself. Said friend even gave me some gold to help buy some mats to level some skills. My account was then banned. I do not bot, I play 100% legit. Apparently, my account was compromised and a OSRS account was made that broke TOS. I tried using Jagex's own customer support, but no dice. I even asked my friend, who was a streamer streaming the game at the time, to help make some noise. Nothing. So I said screw you to them and haven't looked back.

This is still ridiculous. There is no reason to jack up the prices. Why is it that every other MMO hasnt jacked the prices for literaly 15+ years. For Fuck sake Final Fantasy XIV has even a cheaper subcription at 10,99 dollars for only 8 characters per server instead of 40 characters for 13.99. A game that require only 1 character since that character can be everything at the same time just as that garbage called Runescape. Not to mention FFXIV has one of the best Free trial I have ever seen in any game. You dont 5% percent of the fuckin game like in Runescape which is absolutely fucking nothing and wont convince you to spent money for members . But you get 2 whole fuckin expansion in FFXIV for free with every single content in it. The only limitation is cap on your Gil currency and you cant talk in chat or some shit like that unless you are friend. And you cant use Grand exchange which already means you are playing Ironman in free trial. Fuck those at the top of Jagex because they have to be inhaling some cheap paint and Jagex too if they cant say them this wont work and then proceed to make asses of themselves in a survey.

The funniest thing about the FFXIV comparison is that you don't even need to pay for the base game or first two expansions if you're on the free trial. You get a trilogy's worth of JRPG and their respective endgames. The only restriction is that you're stuck without social features which is a good thing given the proclivities of the playerbase.

I played Escape from Tarkov, and Battlestate Games recently released a 250€ edition (taxes excluded) with tons of bonus gear, inventory space and the exclusive perk "enemy scav/npcs far away won't shoot you". That made us laugh, but what's happening to Runescape is not making me laugh at all.

There was another Jagex post earlier from Mod Pips (CEO) about the situation. Some background on why Mod Pips is significant? Mod Pips was the Lead Designer & Monetization Manager March 2011 to Feb 2012 and then Design Manager Feb 2012 to Oct 2012. Squeal of Fortune was introduced the Feb 28th 2012. Yeah, outlook not so good. I haven't played for a long time personally, but even then I still enjoyed being a part of chat when you got your fire cape though Cheese.

Good video! Shame because I recently tried OSRS after being driven away by... FFXIV, surprisingly! Yeah the players hate the devs now. The patch cycle is like 5-6 months for basically no content and all the jobs feel the same. Healer gameplay is so terrible that there is a 1000-page topic in the official forums about healers going on strike. And recently there has been a mod released that uses a badly implemented blacklist change at the beginning of the current expansion to stalk people who block you and see their alts. I guess nowhere has good publicity anymore. Except GW2, weirdly enough. GW2 is doing great right now.

I didn't know OSRS had it worse than FFXI (not a typo) on the return for your monthly sub content, at least XI has some argument for "literally made on PS2 hardware, we can't upgrade it without remaking the whole game" to add too much to the game. As for XIV, ignoring the grifters, I'd say in combination to a commonly perceived lackluster story (what XIV has essentially pigeonholed itself as being for most casual players, so any drop in quality effects them more), a lot of long standing issues have not really been fixed or gone through a long stagnation that have sort of "boiling pointed" with Dawntrail due to not having much to do post-msg like Endwalker did. To keep a lot of drama short, uh...the fanbase did not really do too well with those long, sparse periods of Warlords of Draenor happening.

you should check what ragnarok online has become, it started as subscription model from like 2002 to 2010 (10€ a month or smth like that) and from there went full f2p gacha mode with lootboxes, upgrade material from ingame stores and so much more :D they reworked the whole game to funnel microtransaction galore down our throat, its disgusting. the Death of a Game: Ragnarok Online (& Ragnarok Online 2) video from nerdslayer studios sums it up pretty good.

@@ImportedCheese true, but back when I played (international RO IP banned us europeans in 2018 because they didnt wanna comply to the data protection law) the lootboxes cost 3$ a pop and the best items had around 1% chance of dropping the best items, which was already insane to me, and nowdays it seems to have gotten a lot worse, with droprates of the best items being below 0,3%. Greed is destroying everything we love man ~_~ but I guess we pokemon fans are used to it.

The problem with vulture capital companies is they use good market policy (IE free market exchange principles) as a vector for coming in and parasitizing an otherwise profitable and decently run businesses. They're basically using video game exploits in the real world economy. The only regulation I could see fixing the problem without also severely harming your macroeconomy is tightening control over what companies are allowed to be bought out that way. Maybe a regulation where when a company becomes a corporation they can only be acquired by a holding company after [x] period of operating losses?

Controversial take, I'll actually defend the bond system. People are always going to want to buy gold in a game like RuneScape. If you just let people sell gold for cash, this seems innocent enough. The problem is that if you can earn $1000s or $10,000s selling RS gold (as some people have done), there's a huge incentive to get RS gold anyway you can, including scamming and hacking, and this used to be a very real problem. Bonds are purchased for real world money, can be traded for in game gold, and redeemed for one month membership. But there's not really anyway to make real world money using bonds, which eliminates a lot of the incentive for hacking and scamming. Of course gold selling still exists, but the rates are lower since they have to undercut bonds rates, and it seems most people will purchase gold via an official / legal method if one is available even if it's not the best rate.

Bonds are unacceptable....buying gold from 3rd parties is a bannable offense because Jagex themselves have said it undercuts the entire spirit of the game. But suddenly it's ok to buy progression because Jagex themselves now profit from selling you the gold and progression!! How about they ban the gold sellers and buyers?!

I love RuneScape back in the long ago circa early 2000s. Earlier this year I had stumbled across old school RuneScape I made a free account to see if it recreated what was. My big takeaway was that they have made everything so soul crushingly solitary. There is no real person to person trading anymore, just dumping resources in and out of a single trading stock market. No one is asking for help or info, we all just look it up on the walkthrough in the wiki. The body might be alive, but the soul is dead.

I agreed with the video, up until you said that we hardly get any updates. there is a weekly update, where the game server usually goes offline for 1 to 2 days.
