No, not at all. Once Jesus followers came to grips with his death, they figured out the 2nd Coming wasn't going to happen. Since they had shed all their worldly possessions, a new follower with fast cash written on his heart, the literary Damascus pedestrian is a natural progression character. _"Do away with the law! Just have faith and worship Jesus and your soul will be saved!"_ Amazingly, new churches outside of Judea arise who are gathering tithes and the Damascus pedestrian is writing letters to these and requesting cold, hard currency from those flocks. The poor Jerusalem leaders are aghast at this change but once the money flows, the gentiles with no law fulfillment are slowly adopted as okay. And that's how we now have Joel Osteen, the Copeland's and all the other prosperity or seed/faith evangelists.

I did like the bit where he claims "I've been a Christian for 4 years" and then admitted that he grew up in the church. Dude, come on. He had a religious experience 4 years ago that led him to devoting (rededicating) his life to Christianity, but I bet he would have called himself a Christian the entire time. Usually that kind of religious experience involves changing denominations too - which is also part of why they will often pretend they were Christian before. My grandparents did the same song and dance. They grew up Methodist in the 30s and 40s. Then in the 50s, they had religious experiences and moved to being Baptists. They swear up and down that they were saved as adults and that's when they became Christians. And I know that's what they really think and believe, but anyone looking at it from the outside is gonna hit x to doubt. It's especially true for ppl that end up in denominations that are exclusionary like the Baptist group my grandparents all ended up in - they legit believe that most Christians aren't really Christians. They're not evangelicals, but rather a sort of pre-evangelical fundamentalist that gets along really well with evangelicals but are not quite as... political. In a way, I'm rather glad that if my grandparents were to end up in a specific exclusionary group, it was the GARBC (General Association of Regular Baptist Churches) that they ended up in. There's a lot of really toxic stuff in the later fundamentalist/evangelical denominations that I'm so glad I wasn't subjected to growing up. Not that I don't have my own set of anxiety issues that I'm fairly certain trace back to my religious upbringing, but I never had the same kind of deep self-loathing and sheer hatred for LGBTQIA+ ppl that the newer denominations cultivate in their followers.

"We can do things no other animal can do" uuuhhh that's actually not true. Plenty of ape species have shown the capability to communicate in ways that we can, primarily sign language. Sure we have to teach it to them, but the fact they can learn and use it once taught is pretty telling. On top of that, the one thing many people say distinguishes us from animals... I.E. the crafting and use of tools and weapons, has also been shown to be untrue. Again, lots of ape species have figured out how to use objects around them as crude tools or weapons to aid them in their day to day. If that wasn't good enough.... also consider that the Bolas Spider also exists. Like the name suggests, it's a spider that got its name because it actually uses it's own silk to craft throwing weapons (generally in the form of a bolas) for the purpose of catching its prey. On top of that, spiders in general have shown to have at least a rudimentary understanding of physics. You ever notice when there are pine cones or leaves hanging off a thread of spider silk? That's not a coincidence. That's a spider actually using what qualifies as a heavy object for itself, as a counter weight for keeping it's web stable when it doesn't have enough points to anchor its webbing to. I've actually watched spiders do this while they build their web, and it's actually really fascinating to see.

No other animal can deploy tools that would blow the planet to smithereens several times over so yay for the fancy monkeys. If we are the end goal for creation that creator has a piss poor imagination and a completely hamfisted way of going about getting us here because we appear to be hairless apes who evolved here. On top of that, if it's the Bible God, his only need for us is that a few of us will get pulled into Heaven to spend eternity praising him. It seems to me an imaginative creator could have skipped all of this pain and misery and just popped a few sychophants right into Heaven from the start. "Behold, you exist. This is why guys - when a Christian comes on wanting to talk about this or that - you should cut them through all the bullshit and just ask why they believe. You had to listen to all that crap about slandering Christians and at 21 minutes - its the birds and the trees. You should make that a precondition of talking about anything else.

and at 21 minutes - its the birds and the trees. Good point - it would have helped avoid the blah blah blah waffling to get there too.

It always cracks me up when theists say they have a relationship with their magical sky daddy.... That is like me saying I have a relationship with Harry Potter......Nutty....

Isn't it weird that so many callers claim to have been atheists up until recently, but also admit to being raised in the same church that they have recently come to believe in?

When I was a kid and going to Catholic church (still Christian but long past being Catholic) I remember the droning monotone every single sunday "we believe in one God the father almighty...." and yeah that borg analogy rings familiar.

He protests being called a Borg too loudly me thinks.

"I am a rational thinker" Well there's the problem. The caller has labeled himself as a "rational thinker" therefore anything he thinks must in fact be rational. Rational thinking is an action not an identity.

I love how the caller brings up how one side can be perceived as the Borg from Star Trek 05:33 and then this happens... 30:22

One of the biggest issues that turned me off to Christianity is the blatant manipulation done to attract believers. The carefully selected music, timed to enhance pleas for donations and bring more "lost sheep" into the fold. The overwrought, theatrical emotion-fests by professional preachers in $200 haircuts and $5,000 bespoke suits, complete with tears and manufactured "rage" as they rant against supposed sin. The obscene wealth of people like Joel O'Steen, Creflo Dollar, Franklin Graham, Kenneth Copeland and Paula White. Their palatial churches. Their gift shops. Their private planes. Their "us against them" attitudes and preaching that divides more than it unites. Their involvement in politics. Their opposition to any group that the church's software gurus determine is disliked by influential members. Their obsession with irrational biblical teachings and their rock-hard determination to ignore the inconvenient parts of the bible (Exodus, Chapter 20 is a good example). And how obvious it is that the "word of god" is nothing more than the words of men intent on manipulating their followers while avoiding the obligation to provide evidence that such a being even exists! Incredible claims demand incredible evidence. A skilled verbose pastor can avoid the demand to provide such evidence while dazzling believers with cleverly crafted bullshit. God is far too much like those who believe in him. Religion, improperly used, brings out the worst in people.

I'm in a relationship with Jesus. Just like any one else's relationship with their girlfriend, that you'll never meet because she goes to a different school and lives really far away...

I know this is an old clip, but I watched it through for the first time. The caller starts off the call criticizing Matt for broad brushing questions as these robots, then the collar epitomizes a Christian robot with all the bad reasons for believing and all the discussion on faith

Yep. On other shows with similar accusations of making theists look bad or characterizing them in a negative way the hosts have been quick to point out that it is a fucking call in show. The hosts have conversations with people who have voluntarily called in to make theists look bad. What are the hosts supposed to do about it? I think they go out of their way to try to find something positive in all of the stupidity. "That caller was dead wrong but they were very nice and that was a good conversation." They say stuff like that all of the time. If a caller is a jackass they say that. It's a lovely mixed bag.
