I made these "impossible" casserole pies all the time when the kids were little, about 25 years ago. They really don't stratify like the custardy coconut one, but they are fast and kid-friendly. We tended to gravitate to broccoli and cheese versions which are more like quiche.

Way back in the dark ages, aka the 1970's, my mother would make this. She would brown the meat until it developed a dark, but not burnt coating on the meat, and then do the same to the onions, making them almost caramelized. Then she'd do the Bisquik. Goes a long way to giving you that flame-kissed flavor! :)
@wilkfiadh
@wilkfiadh 3 жыл бұрын
I remember my mom making this for me as a kid! She used a rectangular casserole pan though, and used less milk in the batter so that the "crust" of the pie would crisp up more on the bottom and be more fluffy and dry in the middle since the leftover juices from the hamburger are going to be soaking into your bisquick mixture.
@Brykk
@Brykk 3 жыл бұрын
We make these in a large dutch oven and cook them with the lid on for the first 20 minutes. The bisquick sets up more this way and makes more of a biscuit on the bottom. I like to take the lid off and then put enchilada sauce and cheese on top for 5-10 minutes.

I have a recipe for what I call an egg pie that's on the impossible level... It also consists of jiffy baking mix... In a bowl place 1 cup of jiffy add milk to make a semi stiff spreadable batter spread about 1 inch into pie pan or baking dish , sautee mixed Oriental veg's and meats of your choice.. pour over Bisquick batter.. beat 10- 12 eggs and pour over the entire concoction.. bake at 385° for 40 min. Or until center is firm .. cut into squares or wedges top with white sauce... The impossible part is that the eggs totally disappear...

I took organic chemistry from probably the world's only professor of garlic and onions. No joke, that was the focus of his research. The sulfuric-acid-from-onions thing is a myth, he said. Instead, onions metabolize the sulfur amino acid cysteine into a molecule that works like tear gas (Syn-Propanethial-S-oxide). And when I started making it myself, I added more spices cuz it's very plain. Fresh garlic, cayenne, Rosemary, etc. We also added the cheese in between the meat and bisquick layer. Hey Emmy! Love the videos! My mom has a fudge pudding cake recipe (not sure where it originated) where the ingredients are put into the pan and separate into cake and “sauce” layers when baked. It’s a family favorite if you’re interested. 😀

I got a Betty Crocker cookbook as a wedding gift and this was in there, and so it was one of the first dinners I made for my husband. It's an easy weeknight meal. We put ketchup and fresh, crisp pickle slices on it and it does make it taste like a cheeseburger. I also put the cheese in the mixture before baking it.

She made this recipe often, and I still have the small cookbook Bisquick published, there was also a broccoli chesse impossible pie she made. I'm a subscriber now to your channel love the format and you are a great narrator.

I make a version where I put a Bisquick crust in the bottom of the pie pan (I just kind of make Bisquick biscuit dough and padded into place, the pre bake that for 10 min. Then I add one egg and a little flour to the meat mixture.. I chop up some pickles mix them in and add a bit of mustard and ketchup into the meat mix. Add that all on top of the crust and smothered and shredded cheese, bake it for approx 20 min. It definitely comes out more "cheeseburger"

I really like the variety you provide on your channel. I can get too wrapped up in “gourmet” recipes which I really love and enjoy but sometimes it’s nice to have easy one or two pot dinners. This recipe is a good jumping off point but I would be adding chopped pickles and maybe some shredded cheese and diced tomato into the filling.

Hi Emmy, we love the impossible quiche using the same batter poured over sausage ( we use precooked sausages to save time) onions, broccoli cuts, mushrooms and 2 cups cheese. I make mine in a 9x13 pan or the next size down from the 9x13 if you want a thicker slice. This goes lovely with a fresh fruit salad. Enjoy your videos so much and hope your taste and smell returns quickly.

My beloved mother made these when I was a kid way back in the 1980s. I always enjoyed them, but I haven't had one in years. I should make one up some night: they were always a quick weekday night dinner. Thanks for bringing back such sweet memories.

I've been making an Impossible Taco Pie since the late 80s. Same idea, but you add taco seasoning, onions, and green chilies to the meat. When it's done, you have toppings for it: lettuce, diced tomato, black olives, jalapeno, etc. It's really any personal favorites. My mother used to make it with venison and turkey as well. It was always an easy meal to make and we all loved it. Sometimes, though, you had to bake it just a bit longer to ensure that it was set up nicely. It's a great recipe to experiment with.

I just made this and it's great! I added 1/2 cup chopped pickles after the onion and meat were cooked. I also just poured the batter over the meat in the cast iron skillet and baked it in the skillet. No need to wash another pan! Since the skillet is already hot, it only takes about 15 minutes to cook.
