Unfortunately they do not come out exactly the same but it is closer. I would recommend using a stencil to get the both the same after putting your object through the hole

My guess was that before watching the video I was thinking the boat in the paddle war one solid piece at first and you carved each part out and then you carved a hole in the canoe where the paddle would be going through to make them into two separate pieces I really wasn’t guessing that you soaked the wood and squeezed it down to a smaller size

So... I boil the coin for 1 hour and it will soften, then I shrink it in a vice and hey presto, it will fit inside the solid walnut cube. Or... I could freeze the coin to -150⁰C and it will expand inside...

Cool. I saw a video once on how this guy creates these thick, curved wooden beams, for use in ship making, horse carts (I think) and buildings. It was a similar process; take a thick wooden beam, steam it for like a day so its totally waterlogged using this big steamer and then they would put it in a special vice to slowly bend the beam into shape, before leaving it to dry out for several days. After it dries it gets stuck in the new bended shape.

Same method as the nail through the 2 inner pieces of wood. In that one he just soaked the wood, squashed in the vice, and left the wood return to full size as it dried.

You could possibly make both pieces with one piece of wood and keep them interlocked the whole time. If you did this approach but with completely different kinds of wood, it could remove the previous possibility from the mind of the viewer.

The other option is to carve it out of one solid block of wood, but it takes for ever. Positive side is you can make it look like even more impossible, hole is smaller and paddle bigger / wider .

You just soak the wood in boiling water and squeeze it together push it through and boil it up again to retake the shape. It's the same as the nail between four pillars of wood

Why not just clamp the entire paddle in the vice then it will reshape uniform when immeressed in the water the second time👍I like this trick...btw because of the shape of the paddle it determines the the boat as a kayak...a canoe uses a single end paddle whereas a kayak uses a paddle on both ends of the shaft...I do a bit of kayaking...so this is cool for me👌
