I am glad you have the top comment on here, you are absolutely correct. But for what it is worth it is his own criticism of his work that has brought him to where he is. There is a lot of value in that. A beautiful piece that you or I would love to have in our homes may not be good enough to meet his vision or his brand and that is ok. I am very bad at giving up when I know I should, not in wood working specifically, but in a case like that you could be cutting and cutting to meet you vision until your table is toothpicks… but to recognize your vision is flawed and adapting it is a skill I wish I could have… because I would have that toothpick table

It seems like the roots would've worked, if you had a solid, full, base. Instead of angling the planks out from the base. Then you could've shaped some deep grooves into it, and shaped the root system.

I appreciate capturing the self doubt and hurried frustration in this video. Tied up at the end with expressing the need to get a thing out of your brain and into reality even if you don’t like the result. Can relate so so much. Also showing the struggle of organic woodworking while showing cool experimental techniques for achieving organic shapes.

Yes CA glue can get old and go bad. Usually from moisture/air contamination from the bottle being opened/closed repeatedly. Generally better to keep smaller bottles around and go through them before they go bad than having a big bottle that lasts a long time.

Side note, there's a couple companies that make composite screws/nails, also brad nails/finishing nails/crown staples. That would work great for this project (and also for holding down weird things on a cnc router), since you can just carve right through them since they are just plastic

I believe the CA glue companies advertise a two year shelf life too.

@@thezfunk Unopened shelf life* Seems to go in a year when there is contamination and turns into stickier in 7 month mark, 9 months goo and finally hardens into bottle. Least the thicker stuff, but seems to be about the same for runny CA too though i have no idea when i bough them. Shop moisture percentage seems to effect it too. Recall last year it went off faster since very wet summer and warm winter so more moisture.

I have to admit at the end it looks good. I think I would have used a darker stain on the tree(?) part. The base was a good idea and blended in nicely. Good job John!

I think table turned out cool! Your last table inspired me to carve a nightlight for my daughter I glued up a bunch of walnut cutoffs and carved it into a tree and mounted a couple epoxy owls on and some lights. She loves it and I wasn’t too fond of it at first but now it’s grown on me!

Yea, CA glue will go bad over time. It’s polymerization (gluing) method is activated via water and if you let it sit for long periods of time, atmospheric water will slowly start to polymerize the CA in the bottle, reducing its effectiveness.

I would have drilled and through doweled every lamination multiple times. In the end it wouldn’t hurt the look and it would as a lot of strength.

It’s the difference between being one of the many guys duplicating the work we’ve seen a million times before and making something truly unique. Every furniture designer who made a name for themselves did so by making something no one had seen before. I’m sure they did not love every piece they made. Keep pushing the limits of your creativity. Side note: Even on a piece that doesn’t work together. As individual parts the work is quality. The top looks great. As for the base, your power carving skills are admirable. Perhaps they just don’t belong together.

For trees look up, "Bonsai Tree Nebari." Nebari is a term used to describe the place between the trunk and roots before the roots go underground. :) I like it. Its different!

So regarding life span or "Shelf Life" of CA glues. Firstly always remember you're calculating from the date of manufacture- not when you bought it. And most CA adhesives have about a 9-12 month shelf life. That's if they're stored at around 60F or room temperature. Do not store glues in a cabinet that gets hot. For CA adhesives you can always store them in a refrigerator and that will extend the shelf life significantly. Rule of thumb for CA glues, always buy in the smallest container that you can burn through more quickly. That old bottle of CA glue sitting in a tool box that rarely sees the light of day is worthless. I used to be a 3M Adhesive Specialist so I know what I'm talking about. Cheers!

This is one of those projects that “grow” on you the more you look at it. Maybe you need to make a treehouse table with multiple shelves built into it. really like the shadow idea of the base. That would be a cool idea on other projects.

I have a saying,: If i can draw it i can make it. Im not talking about a sketch but a scale MM drawing 3-4 sides, Top, Long side, Short side and Bottom (if needed) with details in that order. The video is very entertaining. I think you learn a lot from those kind of experiments. I totally agree, that it looks horrible, all the way through. An eyesore. To work for me, you should take a real bush/mini tree and mount a table on it. Making such organic shapes from blocks doesn't do it. And maybe make the table top more dynamic as well. Again, super intertaining video. Keep them coming!

Ok so I have an idea to improve this table to something really cool. Yes what you did resembles a tree, but I think where it went wrong was where the tree connected to the table. My idea is to connect it in the middle with branches attached to the table sides and then you can make a tree stump with root to all sides. Making it look like a tree house.

John needs to discover never hardening clay. With it one can model some pretty out there shapes. Spatial relationships can only take us so far. Then we need to see things in order to visualize them better. That's when modeling becomes useful. Plus I'd love to watch John play with clay. I've a feeling he'd really take to it.

I love this! I think the problem with the bottom is that a tree is round. If the roots came out on the ground all around it would look symmetrical. I think that’s what’s missing

Hey John, I have the solution to your joinery problems. I have been using bamboo skewers for dowel joinery and find it to be a noticeably stronger joint. I have done several videos on different uses. You can find them in my channel playlist "BS Joinery" if interested. Just buy a batch of skewers, the right size 6" long drill bit and start gluing them in from all different angles into the joint. J.Malecki, might have been time to go stomping around in the woods (of appropriate species) and see if there were root or limb bundles that might have 'worked'? Even two root bundles butted to one another may have been easier than laminating and carving from scratch? Might be worth a 'walk in the woods'? I like the idea a great deal but it may take a couple four or six of these to get the organic part like you want it to look? STILL, GREAT DESIGN!

Hey John love the channel I build kayaks for fun so I've got basically no wood working skill but have you ever thought to build a wire or metal frame before you put the wood together? You'd have to cut small prices and drill the holes for the wire or maybe burn through the wood? But I feel like them you wouldn't break so many :p just saying might be a squirrel idea

John, I love watching your videos and I was wondering if you had ever done a tool review on the ClampZILLA clamps by Woodpeckers for your glue ups. They are pricey and want a pros opinion on them for table top, countertop or any other similar types of glue ups.

I admire your commitment to the artistry of making squared timber look organic, but why not just build the base out of actual branchwood. You can get a thicker piece for the trunk and add other, smaller branches to make the end shape. They have the natural bends in them, if you choose the appropriate pieces, and they literally grow on (and fall off) trees. I live by the sea now, so I'm going mad with all the driftwood that I keep salvaging off the beach, but I used to live in an area with lots of woods. If you take a piece or two back with you each time you walk the dog, bury a body, etc, then you can amass a large enough pile for a project like this fairly quickly. If the wood is a bit juicy still, leave it covered for a year and come back to the project a while later. But given the way you built it, I would recommend drilling along through the pieces you are joining with a long auger and glue a length of dowel rod of the same size down the hole and through all the pieces. Cut two or three relief slots along the length of the dowel with a penknife or a v-chisel though to relieve the air pressure as you bang the dowel in, otherwise you turn it into a giant piston. 😂 I use 8 or 10mm, because those are some of the standard dowel sizes here in the UK, so use whatever the equivalent US standard sizes are. Once you're mostly done with the carving/shaping, you drill the exposed end of the dowel out by maybe 1/8th of an inch, and glue in a button made from an offcut of the project wood. Sand that to match and the job's a good'un. Nobody should see it. The dowel acts as a support, like a metal fixing, but it's so much easier to hide once you're done shaping.

now i have finished insulting you, I use bamboo skewers (bbq) i find a drill bit the similar diameter of the skewer, drill through the blocks and coat the skewer in titebond then hammer them in i then cut the ends off. Adds s massive amount of support. Its dirt cheap and quicker than trying to put dominoes in fiddly bits.

I use tight bond CA glue. It lasts about 2 years them goes nasty . The speedy dry seems to last though.

Maybe instead of screws use doves? Maybe instead of making the base, you could have screwed it into wall so it grows from the floor and wraps around the table. That would make much more sense.
