I'd love to see Apollo narrate like an actual documentary on the Napoleonic Wars like one of these battles, "And if you'll look over here you'll see the 9th Foot regiment marching and uh oh oh I hear screaming, yes on the far side we have the French Cuirassiers charging this unit of Hussars, I don't know how General Karl Freiherr Mack von Leiberich is gonna get out of this one."

The "e" behind the numbers is the french variant of "th" in english: 1er = 1st, 2e = 2nd, 3e = 3rd, 4e = 4th, 9e = 9th etc. For example, 3e means "troisième" in french and "third" in english, not three-E. Just a tip, love the NTW3 battles!

Napoleon was born on Corsica, but that was a French territory. And back in the early 19th century, most territories did not have their own identity. For example, people born in Prague, Bohemia, thought they were Bohemian. Not Czech like that would today. Same thing with Napoleon. He would not have identified as a Mediterranean blood because there was no nationalism. In my eyes he was definitely French

Kyle The Red Panda he was most certainly proud to be Corsican and in his early life planned on liberating the island from the French. He liked the ideals of the French Revolution and brought them to Corsica. But they did not and him and his family were kicked off the island

Pixelated Apollo Napoleon was indeed very proud to be Corsican and he did wanted an independent Corsica during his youth. But when he began his career in the military, he really fell in love with the ideals of the French Revolution. When you look back at it, I think Napoleon loved the idea that he could go up in the hierarchy so fast, that it was now based on merit and not on your nobility. Napoleon quickly abandoned his ideas of independent Corsica and fully gave himself to France. After all, his last will was « to be buried near the Seine river in the middle of the french people that he loved so much ». These are his words.
@Raig228
@Raig228 6 жыл бұрын
I agree with you, Guguss. While I would consider a person's nationality over the course of their life, and Napoleon was both Corsican and French at different times, I think in this setting it would be fair to say he considered himself French.

All of Western Europe looks like some super villain found a way to suck a large amount of vibrancy and color from human perception but it's beautiful in it's own wet cold way. And it's the birthplace of Western Civilization so it's always good to respect the progress and loss of life that have gotten us to this point. And I should say on a sunny day the English countryside is gorgeous on a beautiful day but it's just starts raining a few hours later and I'm not even partial to cold mist and constantly wet boots.

Almost like a real Napoleonic battle. Aggressive and mobile French with their brave leaders always getting killed, valiant Russians who always try to save their allies, sturdy and ferocious Austrians that just have bad officers and the incompetent British. All it needs now is the British to blame their defeat on their allies and take all the credit for the small coalition victories that were gained during the battle.
@EzekielDeLaCroix
@EzekielDeLaCroix 6 жыл бұрын
If you read the accounts of the Peninsular War, the British were knocked out of the Peninsula once(Retreat to Coruna) and somehow called it a victory... For some strange reason. It was when Napoleon decided to go return nearly driving the British again because Austria attacked in 1809, thus occupying Spain for the majority of the war and using it as a base to launch. Most of the fighting was done on Portuguese soil with Britain and Portugal were on the defensive behind the Torres-Vedas lines against an under-manned and under-supplied French army that nearly dislodged them even in spite of the hardships, not to mention the heavy guerrilla activity. It wasn't until 1812, when the the French were concentrated on the War in Russia that the Anglo-Portuguese allies made advances because the French Army in Spain was not only undermanned, undersupplied and constantly harassed, but also now having their units taken for the upcoming campaign. Hougoumont wasn't just you by the way, it was a team effort supported by Dutch infantry, Dutch cavalry and Dutch artillery.
@EzekielDeLaCroix
@EzekielDeLaCroix 6 жыл бұрын
This is the Napoleonic Wars by the way, before Britain became Great Power status as it still wasn't quite "there" yet. Regardless, even if we were to take the entire centuries, shrewd diplomacy and your policy of creating a disunited Europe was what gave you an empire, without any of your fiercest competitors at home to challenge you and with the Channel to provide you a good buffer, you were free to attack and occupy less advanced nations. VICTORY FOR BRITAIN, LADS. 10,000 SPEARMEN DEAD. ALLAH SAVE THE QUEEN.
@EzekielDeLaCroix
@EzekielDeLaCroix 6 жыл бұрын
Who can forget? Ciudad Rodrigo = The victory was somewhat marred when the British rank and file, who were upset by the 562 casualties suffered during the storming of the town, thoroughly sacked the city, despite the efforts of their officers and the fact the civilians were Spanish and therefore allies of the British. Badajoz = Same thing. British soldiers well-supplied and well-equipped with considerable Allied support again could not take such losses and proceeded to beat the shit out of their allies as well. According to popular author, Jac Weller: none of Wellington's battles in Spain can be called "great." At Salamanca he failed to exploit his success and the enemy quickly recovered. The battle of Fuentes de Onoro and especially at Talavera were near disasters. According to Weller the Battle of Busaco was "a technical defeat although claimed as victory" and the allignement of troops at Talavera was not very well thought. Weller wrote that "if Talavera was a victory because the French withdrew then Busaco was a defeat because the British were forced to withdraw." For the French the Battle of Corunna is a victory, for the British this is also a victory, but the Spanish considered this battle as a definite French victory (They called it the Battle of Elvina). Of all the bigger battles only Salamanca was the one where Wellington not deliberately set out to fight "at that place and at that time." Majority of the sieges were failures for Wellington. The siege of Burgos was a very costly defeat. Here's a quote from a book about a war that significantly helped drain French military might. "... irrespective of the quality of their men, the Spanish armies constituted a threat that the French quite simply could not ignore. Any sizable concentration of enemy soldiers had to be engaged, or at least contained, by a sufficiently strong force of Imperial troops; otherwise they were free to go on the rampage with impunity. Consequently, a colossal percentage of the French army' was rendered unavailable for operations against Wellington because innumerable Spanish contingents kept materialising all over the country." Even celebrated victories by the British such as "Red Albuera" was a disaster for the British and for some strange reason... Thanks to the British incompetence, almost lost. www.napolun.com/mirror/web2.airmail.net/napoleon/Albuera_1811.html A tremendous firefight developed between the French and Spaniards under José Pascual de Zayas y Chacón , (ext.link). The Spaniards fought tenaciously until British infantry arrived. The smoke and the anxiety resulted in a friendly fire; in the beginning some of the Brits fired in the backs of the Spanish infantry before they realized their mistake. British sources tend to be embellished in such ways that made them look so good, that even when one of their own properly credits the proper victors(at Waterloo, 50,000 Prussians saved the battle) such as William Siborne... His whole life is ruined for telling the truth. www.nam.ac.uk/online-collection/detail.php?acc=1975-05-56-1

The Plucky Brit The British army at the time wasn't actually very good. Great Britain maintained a strong presence oversea mostly via a very strong navy, which would allow for a better and more efficient deployment of military assets on far-away theater of operations, which not many nations of the time could match. They kind of had the same thing as the Japanese had in WW2 with the rivalry between the Army and the Navy, although in this case the Royal Navy was the golden child by default.

I've heard that when the French landed here in Wales they surrendered because they were bluffed into thinking we had more troops, they also mistook the townspeople on the cliff looking down at them as red coats due the woman's traditional dress. To be fair the French were actually being led by an American and they had some 800 irregulars, this included republicans, deserters + convicts.

I think you'd be interested in what Lindybeige has to say about Napoleon. He really paints a different picture of what kind of man Napoleon really was.

Love your vids Apollo! 1 hint: the "e" behind numbers in French just means "th". E.g: 5e = fifth. Still funny to hear you pronounce it as "five e" though :D

This is how Napoleon worked though, he would spread out his forces when facing a numerically superior enemy, then consolidate most of his forces on one position so he would out number the men in one specific position, break their lines, and flank their force, so this is actually pretty accurate
