The stroking motion you used in this example was one of a forehand drive. Would a forehand slice not be more applicable in order to keep the ball low and skidding as opposed to high and bounding?

Hi Blair, great question. Although a slice would also be a great option for an approach shot the drive is typically the preferred method due to its ability to penetrate the court at a faster speed. A drive can be flattened out so that the spin does not rebound off the ground quite as high. A shape however, (striking the ball as it's descending) will create topspin and will tend to sit up, so it is not the preferred method on an approach, unless being used to pull the opponent off the court. Hope this helps!

@@Playyourcourt Indeed helps. Seems like fodder for another video lesson to assist players with the nuance of flattening out their forehand drive in context of the approach.

Scott, when doing the approach shot, do you recommend using topspin or slice? And where does one place the ball for an approach shot? Thanks for the great instructions!

Hey Alex, it’s a bit of a complicated question and certainly varies depending on the situation, but as a general rule in singles if your opponent is in position hitting down the line is a better play, as it is a shorter distance and takes time away from your opponent to react. It also opens up less angles. As far as top spin versus slice, it depends on a lot of factors - how high the ball is, how good you are at hitting top spin off of a low ball, how much your opponent hates low balls, etc. I hope this helps!

Thanks for the reply Scott! That makes sense about angles. If I hit down the line, to pass me, my opponent will have to hit down the line through me or if the opponent does cross-court to hit away from me, more chance the opponent's ball will go wide and out. My son knows how to hit topspin and slice so I didn't know what to tell him about what spin to use during an approach shot. But to give spin that the opponent's hate is a very good tactic.

@@alexdaudsyah4981 Lob to your opponents back hand,(topspin, neutral, or backspin...your choice) then waltz to the net, call out the score and put the ball away.

PlayYourCourt.com A low approach would be a Left-Left where as the higher approach would be a right-left. Beginner level player-semi closed.

I thought there were 2 main footwork patterns to use on the approach shot: the hop step and the crossover run through (in which your weight transfers from the right to the left foot) How does the one you teach in this video fit in with those 2? Thanks
