6:50 This actually explains why I'm so obsessed with timekeeping and making planned get togethers. I'm introverted, so I need a lot of willpower just to leave the house sometimes. I can never just 'go out'; I am a lot more comfortable if I know the thing I'm arranging is not happening the day I arrange it.

Thanks for this really helpful course. My keystone habit is meditation and as Alan Watts rightly said, the number 1 reason we should meditate is because meditating is fun, it is in and of itself an enjoyable experience. All of the benefits of meditating, of which there are many, are secondary to the fact that meditating is a brilliant hobby.

I found myself unemployed a couple months ago, decided to make multiple big changes to my day to day life. I found myself very emotional at the end of each day, with all of my vices pulling at me. “Ego depletion” is exactly what was happening, and I had no understanding of myself in this way. Thank you man, fr! This has already been a huge help to my mental health and understanding of myself.

Great video! Some of the logic used here was the same basis of me deciding to go to the gym every day instead of 3-4 days a week. Since I go every day, it requires no mental energy to work out, it's just automatic. It actually requires more willpower for me to skip a day, lol.
@justshrug7 жыл бұрын
Really loving this course. Great work. Keep it up.

i love you man, i have enjoyed your videos. In this video I learnt that making mental processes makes it efficient to get more things done. If am getting urges, i should be mindful by saying things like I have the urge to (addiction) and change my environment like getting out of the room or letting the door open. Also, with decision fatigue, i can instead just make an agenda for like a shopping list or the chapters. another example is the video that to schedule a workout early like scheduling on monday for wednesday workout (implenentation retention), going to the gym even is its for 1 minutes, 10 seconds even 1 second so that its easier for that line of automaticity (stick to habit), and watch youtube videos to stay motivated or convincing yourself (love the thing you like).

I liked your concept of automation of actions. It's actually in our Indian value system also. We can assume that our action is function of two types of variable 1. external stimulus ( like sticky notes , alarms ) 2. our conscious decision-making process . 1st brings automation and 2nd causes loss of will power.

I've noticed it very vividly when I moved my laptop from the main room of the house to my room. Now I don't even use it cause I only rarely go to my room, only to sleep. Now if I want to go and play some games I have to actively remove myself from my family, so it becomes a conscious decision, and since I'm trying to manage my gaming and overall computer time, it helps tremendously in keeping it under control.

Charles Duhigg addresses ego depletion and the question of willpower though without mentioning the two terms, ❝Habits, scientists say, emerge because the brain is constantly looking for ways to save effort. Left to its own devices, the brain will try to make almost any routine into a habit, because habits allow our minds to ramp down more often. This effort-saving instinct is a huge advantage.❞ (pp. 17-18). The Effort to be saved is willpower and the hard time of decision-making.
