Doing these drills I realise just how much confidence got knocked out of me. The more I practice the more dialogue I come up with. As a kid I had TWO imaginary friends ... going through these reminds me just how much purposeful, articulate I was since I played with them daily even through the night and it was this that forced people to make me shut up. As a result I lost a TON of confidence, hardly did anything worth effort and at 35 years I'm trying to unbreak the chains I know were holding me back. Thank you mate, my writing is going to elevate significantly💯

@Mike it all comes down to the human soul, and how your conscience is trying to deliver the message. When the words from your mouth becomes fluid then it was meant to be said. There are messages that I deliver with flaws but they still reach regardless, God has a way of carrying our Message no matter if the individual has a brain injury, speech impediment, stuttering problem.. remember Gods beloved Moses gave an excuse of His stuttering speech but look at the mighty works that was done by God using Him to deliver the message ! Communication isn’t just about speaking clearly. The world has deaf people so a clear voice is useless. Even if you have a clear voice and have great writing skills the person you’re speaking to may not understand the same words you use, or disagree with your opinion, or aren’t interested in your message. Just because you say something clearly doesn’t mean that you’re right, or that you’re being understood or that people care.

Just a random thought here (related to speaking clearly). I feel I have an inhibition about speaking clearly due to my lack of assertiveness. Mumbling (etc) creates an ambiguity which makes it easier for me to back peddle on things I say. Now I don't desire to present as "strong" but I do want to be more authentic and speaking clearly, unapologetically (while still politely) will help me to achieve this authenticity. This method is identical to the process professional jazz improvers do to get better at improvising. We call it “transcribing” - imitating someone else’s entire solo, matching the style and inflections. I am studying for my DMA in saxophone currently, and they have me teaching on the spot often in front of audiences, and I feel that my speaking fluency needs to get better. When I converse with friends and fam I don’t use filler words , words flow easily . I really want to improve my communication and ease the nerves. Idk why I get anxiety when speaking to strangers. Can anyone else relate? I’m going to scroll through all his videos and hopefully he has one on this topic.

In order to speak clearly, you first need clarity in your mind. You can speak clearly having 100s of thoughts in your head. The more you calm, the more you get clarity of what u want to speak.

Hi Derek. In my rambling I've just come back after some while to this clip of yours and can't help notice the motivation you are giving. During the time since I have watched it first I practised mimicking the sounds and intonations from different sources I liked at the moment. They were like audio-books, youtub-clips, podcasts. It was helpful. English is not my native tongue, and beside the aural practice it was also the practice of new words, bits idioms, slang expressions, probably even gestures. I was not stuck to a single accent or voice, because after a while they were becoming to seem boring . I was changed samples, and went further exploring some regional British accents, which was also a great fun. Maybe sometimes I deviated from the clearness, but I think it was beneficial in some point for understanding the tonality and the pitch of the language. And, of course, it worked like a feed-back: the better we can produce the speech the better we can understand it. Eventually I have cached a feeling that the British voices are produced more likely from more former part of the mouth, even some sounds are coming from the back of the throat. It's like the feeling that the frontier muscles and the front part of the tongue work more than in my native Russian. It's a sort of my tuning when I try to mimic, my "inpersonality". And my question at the end. What do you think about this Yorkshire boy kzbin.info/www/bejne/fYW2k2uwj8l5j7s Isn't he wonderful? It's one of my likings now how he speaks. Does it feel like clear sounding to you?

An interesting thought is how this idea translates between languages. For example, if I'm a native Arabic speaker, would the practice improve my Arabic speech if I listen to an English speaker I admire? And thank you for explaining this and making it short & sweet!
@cuisine40 Жыл бұрын
I’m guessing it would, but it’s funny you say that because I came here looking to improve my Spanish (but I’m not fluent or native, only learning the accent) and I realized I’m pretty terrible with having control over my speech, in Spanish and English (native language). Do you think it worked for your languages?
@holliswilliams8426 Жыл бұрын
I do stuff like he does in this video for Spanish. So I listen to someone with a Spanish accent which sounds good to me and try to imitate how they speak, this can help to improve accent and pronunciation.

I am a Freshman, and the ONE thing preventing me from acting confident is the struggle of not speaking clearly. Sometimes I stutter as I come up with what I'm going to say, and not only that. I have difficulties speaking fluently and having the right tone when speaking, and I want to change so I can become much of a confident, speaking person.
