It would have been interesting, because in dallas when he was sometimes used as a spot-up shooter it was clear that off-ball movement and off the catch triples weren't at that high of a level so it would be interesting to see how it translates.

Great video! You definitely value scalability more than I do but the analysis of each player was still spot on. I always find your perspective on the game very interesting. If I had to make any changes I'd probably move Nash and LeBron ahead of Magic but I'm not sure. I also don't know that we've seen Jokic's offensive peak yet, and definitely don't think we've seen Luka's, I wonder how high each of them can reach.

Thru Chamberlain's "scoring" seasons, 1959-60 thru 1965-66, Wilt averaged 32.8 ppg, 26.4 rpg, 3.2 APG, and on a .50.5 FG%, in league's that averaged .42.6 shooting in that span...or WAY over the league average. And, keep in mind that Wilt's roster was so horrible in his 62-63 season, that his team failed to make the playoffs...in a year in which he averaged 44.8 ppg on .52.8 shooting. Thru Wilt's absolute prime, 1959-60 to 1966-67, when Chamberlain led the Sixers to a 68-13 record, and a world title. 30.4 ppg, 27.0 rpg, 4.5 APG, .51.5 FG% (in league's that shot .42.8 in that span) Thru Wilt's 11th season, and in the year in which he was injured... 25.8 ppg, 25.6 rpg, 4.4 APG, .52.4 FG% ( in league's that shot .43.3 over that span.) You need to read Thinking Basketball by Ben Taylor. A lot of the reason why Wilt’s team weren’t that good for a while despite his crazy scoring is because he was a black hole who never created for teammates

For example, one of his main points is the idea that Wilt’s offences got worse the more he shot, but he just doesn’t mention that the Warriors’ offensive rating relative to the league was 100% positively correlated with him taking more shots during his six years there. He can be “Mr. context”, but when talking about how Wilt shooting less made the Sixers better offensively in 67, he fails to mention that Wilt shot 16% better than anyone else in the league from the field (crazy outlier season. Or the remarkable internal improvement for what had been a young and mediocre Sixers team when Wilt joined them. He claims that the Warriors “weren’t that much worse” when Wilt left, even though they won 4 of their next 33 games after he was traded. In the Bill Russell write up, he compares Wilt’s scoring against Russell (would have led the league in scoring in five of his first seven years on that alone) to David Lee and Roy Tarpley (in a 19 game season no less, doesn’t mention this), and these are just some of my gripes. One can find legitimate critiques in Wilt’s game without trying to mislead the reader, but in my mind, Taylor chooses not to do this for the most part.

His teams pace was 131 that year lmao, when adjusting the highest scoring seasons of all time greats to 131 Jordan would've averaged 60.71 ppg in 1987, Kobe would've averaged 59.73 ppg in 2006 and Lebron would've averaged 51.77 ppg in 2008. Nobody cares about Wilt averaging 50 ppg against plumbers at an absurdly high pace that allowed him to shoot 40 times a game along with 17 free throws a game.

I’m somewhat giving Luka the benefit of the doubt that he won’t have some random absurd statistical falloff but I think he’s poised to finish much better than where he is now in the history books as an offensive player if he stays on the right track. Like you, I also left off Kareem because tbh despite being the former leading scorer and having the “most unblockable shot in NBA history,” he really just… wasn’t all THAT as a scorer. Kareem not once averaged over 30 points per 75 possessions for a season. That coupled with not really being any sort of noteworthy playmaker makes me leave him off. Left off Wilt because just too different of an era.

Wilt Chamberlain's career scoring average is 0.4 points behind only Jordan's, plus he has over 4 assists per game. Not even on the list??? He averaged 40 ppg for his entire first 6 seasons, but was asked, and did, curtail his scoring to concentrate on defense after that.

Those high scoring seasons weren't actually Wilt's peaks as an offensive player, it is more so around '67 when Alex Hannum was his coach. There are a couple things you need to know about Wilt, one was the pace of his era was the highest in NBA history plus he played over 90% of the game. If one guy is playing 110 possessions, and another is playing closer to 80 it isn't fair to compare their ppg without adjusting for era. Also those scoring seasons he was a massive ball hog, once he started to learn how to pass he became way harder to stop, it's not just about inflating your own value but also being able to make your teammates better. Look at the 2014 spurs, one of the greatest teams of all time destroyed a team that had three top 15 players because they as a team simply played better than the Heat. It's not what you do as an individual but also what you do for your team

Points generated (scoring + assists) per 36 minutes played: Doncic 46.7 Magic 41.1 Westbrook 40.7 Jokic 40.1 Harden 39.8 Lebron 39.7 Curry 39.5 Stockton 38.7 Chris Paul 38.4 MJ 38.2 I believe that makes ten. Of course, several of the above benefitted greatly from 3pt shot. If you adjust for 3-pt shot, Curry would fall out, replaced by Oscar Robertson. (Adjustment made by taking 3 pt attempts x 2 pt fg percentage x 2). Of course, this list doesn't take into shooting efficiency, so does not represent players with highest fg percentages.

@@HoopVenue Really, because in 2001 and 2002 Kobe, who was younger and the 2nd option still averaged MVP level numbers in both the playoffs and regular season, in the 15-1 run Kobe was arguably more dominant in the west leading up to the finals, averaging 35 for a 4 game sweep of the kings and 33 7 and 7 for a 4 game sweep of the spurs. Steph, ok maybe. Nash hasn't won a ring, he was good for running a good offense but once Kobe got Pau it was over, there was no more Suns dynasty it was clear they just weren't built to win, but they did have to deal with all time great teams such as the lakers, spurs and mavs of the mid to late 2000s. Nash, has no argument. Now Lebron has some argument, but ignoring that much of his all time great statistical seasons came when the league pace was higher resulting in better looking stats. If u actually adjust for pace, in their primes, Kobe averages about 2 more ppg, and only 1 less apg while winning more rings. I mean we can't ignore the fact that the 2020 ring is not as important as the rest of the rings even he got, which aren't as valuable as Kobe's. I mean, I'll go your rout and think of advanced statistics. SRS is used to determine the degree of difficulty for a schedule as well as for championship teams, of the top 10 teams for SRS, score, Kobe is on 3, 2001, 2002, and 2009. Mj, ok yeah sure. Lebron, arguably but his one man passing style hasn't proven to be effective really other than the 2020 ring, because it takes away from team passing, which was slightly offset by rondo, but overall that wad just a weird year for basketball in general.

I believe LeBron’s scoring/Playmaking combo adds lots of value, but Magic’s Playmaking is still just so valuable that you could argue Magic is actually floor raising at a very similar level when paired with his efficient scoring game. However next to high-end talent I would prefer Magic’s more scalable traits such as his off-ball game and passing.

KD over Kobe is a joke. 08 kobe crushes him as a ballhandler, passer, and on ball playmaker in addition to having a lower turnover rate and generating more high quality assist. He was also a more resilient scorer.

Yeah but KD is more scalable due to his efficiency. We saw this when KD put up better numbers with Steph in the finals than Kobe did with Pau in the finals. There is a lot of noise with that comparison I must admit, but KDs efficiency frankly makes his more scalable. Kobe however is frankly light years ahead with scoring resiliency and high quantity scoring so frankly for me it’s a toss up.

If that doesn’t deserve too 3, idk what does. Curry dropped 30+ a game in 2021, and they didn’t even make the playoffs. You have to start factoring in WINNING when making videos like this.

Not a knock on Kobe but while they had a great offense in 2009, their 2010 offense wasn’t all that great they won it on defense as far as not having legit stars you might be correct but they had a lot of talent and that is shown by the fact that they had the highest paid roster in the NBA. The truth is that era was sort of thin, while there were a handful of big stars playing, there wasn’t a lot of depth in the league at that time. And again this is not trying to shit on Kobe. I mean top 10 all time is crazy ranking the fact is he wasn’t as an efficient scorer as some of the higher players on the list. And you could argue that he should go higher but putting him where he did by no means disqualifies anything because most people that analyze hoops would have him around where he is at.

While he has peak lebron offense at 6.00. He’s got Steph also at that. But if scalability weren’t factored at all, then nash would pass lebron and steph, as he has peak nash at 6.13.

All of the efficiency numbers I use are relative to era. Kobe being 3-4% ahead of the league’s average during his time is the same as someone being 3-4% ahead of average today, if I were using raw numbers that argument would hold, but I accounted for that.

I think, his combination of scoring and playmaking alone, with the load he had on those Rockets teams, makes him Top 5 already. He's literally the engine that drove thos Rockets teams under D'Antoni. You know, the posterboy of Morey Ball. And if we're talkinh about peaks, I dont think there are even 3 guys better than him the way he has played since the 2016-2017 season. If you have Nash in there, Harden has to be higher. He's essentially Nash on steroids. D'Antoni basically made a heliocentric offensive system around Harden based off of thos Nash's Suns' blueprints, and took it further by adding the elements of selective isolation and that slavish devotion to efficiency via a ton of 3's and total elimination of mid-range shots. And he numbers show that (see Rockets offensive ratings). Harden's scoring is like the basketball equivalent of the Ketogenic diet. Iso-heavy style, emphasis on taking the most efficient shots, and mind-numbimg amount of free throws and 3's. I mean, you should put more value on isolation scoring because it is self-generated offense. Being able to create your own shot, especially with how Harden did it in his last 3 years in Houston, should really put a premium on iso ball. Plus with Harden's playmaking ability, that already makes him one of the most valuable and impactful offensive engines in all of basketball. It's like having Lamar Jackson as QB but modded with Aaron Rodgers' arm.
