I wouldn't be surprised if Netflix didn't learn their lesson and announces another tone deaf project, probably Alice in Borderland: The Challenge

Luckily almost all the Alice in Borderland games are completely non-recreatable for a game show unlike with Squid Game. They’re either based on extreme wit and are solved in the show or they’re way too physical and violent. They could use a couple, but hardly enough for a full show

I actually like the parallel between the OG show and reality show when Darius said he would do it again. In the OG show, after the first game when people realized what the stakes were, they were allowed to vote to end the games or continue them. Half voted to stay, half voted to leave, with one odd person out (the old man, secret insider) who voted to end the game. However, once everyone got back to the real world and faced their struggles again, they realized that their situation was life or death for them and decided to go back to the game and try to win. Of course Darius would want to go back! Even with the real stakes of dying, the thought of winning millions of dollars and just taking the chance could convince a lot of people. I just thought that parallel was super interesting.
@romarow
@romarow 9 ай бұрын
I totally agree, I feel like this reality show was a bit tone deaf to the purpose of the original show, but at the same time points like this are really interesting to think about. I think it's a testament to how well done the show was in regards to things like this and the idea of human desperation and risk. Though the reality show obviously didn't have the same risk factor to it, the parallel themes are fascinating to see play out.
@praiselinny
@praiselinny 9 ай бұрын
@Ks-101 That's not what my comment meant. I meant that in the OG show, people didn't care if they died in order to possibly win millions of dollars. So for the reality show, of course people who competed would want to go back for a season 2 like Darius said, even though they had cases of hypothermia and poor diet.

As messy at it looks, it was still fun to be a part of. Lol I wouldn't do it again, but I'm glad I did it. But in defense of my friend Spencer, and well everyone else, I will say that we had quarantined alone in hotel rooms for a week prior to starting the games, and we were in the dorms for usually a day in between games, by the time we came to dalgona we were all fully immersed in the "squidverse" and the stakes felt super high right up until the point of elimination. And I am not exaggerating when I say that people were PISSED at him. The first season of this show was definitely a social experiment like no other. - Player Number 357

I mean this is messed up and that is exists is tone deaf but a lot of what you're describing, poor quality food, condensing hours and days of filming into short episodes that are misleading or a poor representation of what actually happened, is what the vast majority of reality games do. Big Brother had contestants competing in tasks for the weekly shopping budget, and if they did poorly, they just didnt get enough money for food that week, Willam from Drag Race said they were just fed the leftovers after the crew ate which meant sonetimes all they were given which rice and ranch dressing. Shows that have contestant talking heads will have thrm wear the same outfits every days so thry can edit multiple days together to suit their narrative. This is just a few things off the top of my head.

Love this analysis. I have not watched the reality show version but i really resonated with your point about this show being another example of poor people struggle over money for the literal entertainment of others and to make the wealthy wealthier. The thing is, the other examples were set in fiction (OG season and new Hunger Games), but now we're bringing it closer into reality?? I feel like these stories were meant to radicalize people, not bring about a new level of TV dystopia.

I'm surprised there's hate against Spencer (the umbrella cookie guy), when I saw that episode I could completely understand why he was feeling so awful. Not only is $4.6 mil a life changing amount of money, he's also condemned his group to the hardest challenge. Hilarious but at the same time sad that clearly this cycle is never gonna end.

I liked the show alot though, the fact that it missed the point of the real show, and made it kinda original was actually nice. When everyone thought it was tug of war but it wasnt... I like how they strayed away from using violence and physical strength to win games. On top of that IT WAS SO ENTERTAINING. The suspense and unpredictability was amazing.

I thought the main purpose of this show was to show how brutal these games were and how they manipulated the vulnerable populations and killed them to clean up society. It wasn’t to make you want to do it for real. But then again, the viewers were like the sicko rich investors who watched this sick game as entertainment so the IRL version proved that in a way. I am not bothering to watch it. Only here for the commentary.

I think they signed up for a competition that gave them a chance to win a lot of money, not to be explored for hours, mistreated, starved, etc. A few participants said that when one person passed out, they received no medical help for more than 30 minutes, the Netflix producers just stood there and watched, and actually when they decided to do something, it was to put that person in a fake casket (just like they do in the show), to show that to the cameras; that person did not signed up for that. A woman that participated recently said she was sexually assaulted by one of the producers of the show, she definitely did not signed up for that. I think even watching the original Squid Game series, it's possible to draw real comparisons with this ridiculous reality show: people that are desperate will do a lot and go through a lot for the smallest chance of getting what they need (in this case, money), I mean, in the show people knew they were going to die and still came back to the games because to them, their lifes were already so shitty and so painful that death was actually worth considering if they had a chance to win, right? I think the biggest problem here is that Netflix knows all of that, they knew people were desperate and hopeful and they took full advantage of that, actually they decided to explore it even more. I feel bad for the people who just expected to go through a few silly tests and got treated like absolutely trash :/
@yeeyeeyeeye

The original Squid Game pointed out that for a lot of people, it really is a life or death situation. When you are deep in poverty and barely struggling to get by, of course you would sign up to participate in the Squid Games even with the knowledge that you may very well die. Even the thought that you may win the cash prize is enough to get someone to sign up. It's all about Netflix exploiting the impoverished for entertainment.

I completely agree with the comments saying this reality show is tone deaf and goes against everything Squid Game criticized, yes that's true! But the only people that care about the message of the show are the people who watched it (not everyone who watched it, obviously) and people who wrote it, I mean, Netflix only sees the show as a major hit that gave them a lot of money and opportunities to make more, like, Netflix doesn't care that Squid Game criticizes capitalism and how disgusting it is to put people in need in terrible situations for the smallest chance of receiveing what they need, Netflix saw "iconic" tests they could apply in real life, "iconic" uniforms with big numbers on them and the chance to use the product that they own to make even more noise and money for them.

@@MENGRANRANRAN I know that, I wasn't talking about those people (specially because I mentioned the comments made in this particular video), and you don't need to read class theories or anything to care about the message of the show 😂 a lot of people around me understood and agreed without any of that, even my 16 year old brother understood it, it's not that hard to be critical of the capitalist system (not everyone is) when you are living in it and can see all of it's flaws, or watch a show and think how heartbreaking it is that people were led to that point because of the way their world worked and how absurd it is that the world actually works like that. I tried to avoid reality tv for so long but I love the original show so was very curious. It's typical reality tv and pretty perverted. It punishes those for being too kind and noticeable then punishes those who didn't impress other enough to the point of faking a friendship. Like the original show, you realize that everyone supposedly is in this for themselves despite a few sacrifices by those who saw others as more worthy. That was very cool.

I really didn’t like most of the contestants on the reality show. I found it funny how in the original show, I was actually rooting for fictional characters to win because they all have a reason to be the way that they are. I may be mean but in the reality show, I saw how despicable people were and prayed on their downfall-that’s what kept me hooked on the show. I know one contestant that is an “influencer” (aka a really big egotistical asshole) and went on the show-which made me upset because he’s in a well paying job and living a comfortable life-why tf he needs 4 million dollars? I also hated where the contestant got rewarded a burger and fries and the one girl straight up stole his burger and ate it without asking. That’s so rude. The beekeeping man and the older mom was too pure for that show tbh. I felt horrible to see them go.

I feel like it's just too... scripted? I rewatched the first episode outta boredom on a Saturday morning, and I was like... WHY? when the duo chose to eliminate 200 at the first test. "one person eliminated means another 10 grand added to the pool", which doesn't seem to make sense. It isn't like there's more or less than 4,560,000 at the end of the day. What they did just accelerated the process. I think it was scripted so, so that we knew what the "tests" were supposed to be. Edit: the best part of the show is a comment I read the other day "do they really die when eliminated?". It sent me

There are certain tv shows that could be turned into real life adaptations and it can work extremely well, but “Squid Game” in particular as a real life game show does not work at all for a number of reasons. What made the fictional series so climatic and great was the ginormous stakes involved for all of the players, all of them living in massive amounts of debt and having their own individual things/people that they are fighting for, all of them being so desperate that they are willing to kill each other to be the last one standing that wins the money that would change their lives and their families lives, it is incredibly heartbreaking.. And in this reality game show there is nothing at stake for these players, they have absolutely nothing to lose because they aren’t at risk of being killed if they don’t win. All of them are just there to be on television, gain some clout, and possibly win some money but if they don’t they just return to normal happy lives.

I didn't really like the reality, I think it was too long and those tests were really boring, because a lot of people that were getting eliminated were completely random unknown people that we weren't even introduced to. I think they dragged it too much just to make a longer show. Also, I think in the original show they are fighting and competing however they can, and in the reality show it was a lot more about getting lucky, like in the first test two people were randomly selected to choose someone to get eliminated or have an advantage, and I feel like this kind of thing tempered with the game too much and made it way more unfair for people competing. Squid Game is compelling as a show due to us knowing that everyone is going to die but still getting attached to and rooting for them, as they all have very difficult lives and deserve more than that. I don't think this type of feeling can be reproduced in a reality show.
