With an overwhelming amount of people requesting that I start doing some videos in my "old style", I decided to shoot In Depth Tours again, including test drives and the occasional "cold start". There has been so much positive feedback on this new style that I will be working to integrate it more often, in addition to my In Depth Reviews and project car videos. Today, I take you on an interactive walkthrough of our next big potential project, a '69 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu sedan that used to belong to my wife's grandmother. In addition to showing you all of the cool stuff, I also get it running after a long hibernation and take it for a drive. I feel this style will be a continuous work in progress so please, any suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated! A lot of you suggested I ditch the GoPro for the walk around portion so this video is shot with my camcorder that I shoot my reviews with. As you'll see, it's a HUGE different in quality! Anyway, I hope you all enjoy, it's been a very very long time since I've uploaded videos like these. As before, this was a lot of fun to film! Again, a HUGE thanks to everyone who took the time to watch my recent update video and those of you who provided your honest feedback on what I should focus on in 2018. You all are the best!

I know the patina is probably more interesting these days, but I'd love to see the car restored to it's former glory with a fresh coat of the champagne gold paint. Regarding the engine, I personally like keeping a car original so I'd rebuild the 307 since so many people drop 350s in everything. I'm sure more muscle would be cool too though, I'm just weird with the love for completely original OEM setups lol. Really loved this tour and I look forward to seeing what you do with it this year! Since I'm hoping to have a few classics of my own eventually, I'm sure I'll learn some valuable tips from whatever you decide to do with the Chevelle.

I’m 100% with Matt. I’d love to see the 307 kept and car painted. I’m more partial to the 307 than the paint personally but still. And you have got to keep that original Jim reed dealer tag that’s so cool. But I do realize there would be a lot of work in the 307 unfortunately:(

I would have to agree because an original car like that deserves to return to it's former glory as when it was new. Not the most desirable car but that is what makes it special, not everybody had the hotrod 454 chevelle of the day. I like the fact that it is a regular car, for regular people.

I'd say restore it, and keep it as factory as possible. Just make it a nice cruiser. But maybe upgrade some parts of it, if it were me I'd give it at least power front discs, and an overdrive unit. But keep the 307.

My dad and I own a '67 4-door Chevelle Malibu with a stovebolt 250 and the 2-speed powerglide. My great-grandpa was the original owner and when he died in the 90's, my dad inherited the car. It has very little rust and is very solid. It's not a performer, but a cruiser- And that's good enough for me in the summertime, when we've got the windows rolled down on a two-lane highway doing 50. I can't wait to do that again.

Today's world is so much about going fast or it's either " drop an Ls in it " I'd fix the little 307 and keep the 2 speed. Sometimes cruising taking in the scenery is better. Keep it an honest and reliable car. It definitely deserves respect as a survivor.

Saabkyle04 that 307 is definitely a very capable engine if you can it up and get it in good tune. My 307 was burning rubber with all original parts! If you're worried about gaskets, get some good felpro gaskets, and some AT-205, and your engine will never drip again

Keep it a 307. Then its still original to the name plate. Keep adding oil to the engine till your ready to rebuild the engine. Paint, the fade looks great. Chevy ss rims with the center cap would look great on this car. This car is being handed down to you, take good care of it. :-)

When i was 5 or 6 (Im 12 now) my dad purchased a 72 nova, but it was just a rusty old shell. I was always eager to help but we didnt work on it much. My dad wanted to get the original engine and fix all the rusty parts to get it back to its former glory but ended up selling it the same year. This video really inspires me and makes me want to do it all over again now im a bit older.

As a child of the '60s, I have great memories and respect for these cars when they were new. So I favor restoring it to factory-fresh condition, although I don't object to a different engine (period correct, of course) or updated electronics. I don't understand the appeal of "patina", and hate the idea of condemning this vehicle to permanent rust-bucket status. I would enjoy following your progress in the restoration process--finding parts, refinishing the paint and interior, etc. Good luck!!

Beautiful car....four doors don't get the love they deserve. Rebuild it back to stock, those 307s may not be the most powerful small block, but they have plenty of grunt. Too many people dump a 350 on everything. And the patina fad is done, repaint in the factory color, give that car what it deserves and bring it back to its former glory. A couple mellotone steelpack mufflers, Cragar s/s wheels with white letter tires, and that's all I would change.

If it were mine, I'd get the body work and interior back to driving condition. No reason to turn it into a showcar you can't use. Just get it to daily driver standard. I'd spend most of the money on the powertrain, particularly upgrading the 2-speed Torqueflite. Updated transmission will boost the mpg significantly so it can be driven for a reasonable cost. I'd also upgrade the brakes to front discs. Then I'd drive it every day.

I did that with my car. The engine and all that was religiously OEM, as Hambert would say, except I plan to have an HEI converter installed to help with starting and continuing to run after starting on cold days since it's a daily driver, and a digital AM/FM radio with a headphone jack, though I do wish the digital radio had the same warm orange light as the speedo, fuel gauge, transmission gear panel (hydramatic indicator) and warning panel (assuming that would've been a tach as well, if my car had one)

Something I've always adored about Saabkyle and his videos for the past few years, is that unlike other car reviewers which either just give you a minimalist bare bones overview of a car (many copying Saabkyle's style in a very cringey way) or give you a review akin to an emotional rollercoaster ride, Saabkyle always manages to have such an amazing air of positivity to his reviews, that honestly make his videos a pleasure to watch, he doesn't drop harsh polarizing opinions about cars, he just loves em all for what they are. It truly immerses people in these videos (especially his return to the "tour" style videos), to where whatever you're here for, wether it's getting another in depth look at a new sports or luxury car, or you're looking out of curiosity for vintage cars, and the culture that created them. Whichever one you're here for, you truly get an amazing immersive take on these vehicles, on par almost with driving them themselves. And that is something that I think no other car reviewer can have (especially the Saabkyle knockoff channels which even now in 2018 they still sound like they're reading off of a checklist rather than getting you and the car on to the same level xp)

I'm no car expert but what I would do is take the engine out of the car and put a 350 in it and save the 307 for restoration when you feel like restoring it....then I would paint it a color that wasn't from factory like a plum purple or volcano orange or something that you don't see everyday...that's my idea tho...do what you want to do with the car...but keep it as original inside as possible

That 307 is a perfectly good engine after a rebuild, though. Not saying a 383 would be a bad idea, but would that even increase performance with the tranny that car has? old automatics are sluggish at best, especially the two speeds. I know, because my car has a 2-speed Jetaway, which is just an Oldsmobile rebranded Hydramatic.

Yeah you're right. Thinking about it now, it is a 4 door. Would probably be better off going more of a straight Restoration or lil Resto Mod. Those old Chevy 2 speed power glides can handle a lotta power, lot of old drag cars built with em. Either way will be nice to see it Restored. Those old 307's are pretty bullet proof. Had a buddy in Highschool try and blow it up by running without coolant, maybe even oil. Still took forever lol

I would definitely keep the 307. Good sounding, good running cruising engine. I, for one, would love to have a '66 Olds Toronado, just to cruise in. Something powerful and torquey, and decently quick in a straight line, but obviously not meant for the track, but also stylish af. Something about the pneumatic popup headlights and buzzy power windows, as well as the ice and snow eating grip of a FWD transmission and 7L V8.

COOL ....... My mom during the 1980's had a 1967 Malibu with the same engine and it also was a 4 door. My brother found out it's TOP speed during High School of being 100 mph. We ALL would LOVE more of your CREATIVE in depth reviews on car's that you do........ AND ignore the HATERS because it just shows how COOL you are.....

I was thinking a kind of period-correct hot rod build. Maybe some American Racing Torq Thrusts, some factory upgrades, and as many New-Old Stock parts as possible. But as I was reading these comments, I noticed everyone was very opinionated. I do not want to come off like that. I see the amount of genuine commitment and passion you have put in to your channel and I see this as something that shouldn’t be for us, but for you. I think you should do what you’d like with the car no matter what anyone says.

Happy new year, once again. Good luck restoring the 1969 Chevelle. I would keep the original radio on the dash, my opinion. Sure, it doesn't work, but, that's originality right there!

Make it a restomod like you're doing with the 240. Make it look like stock, but perform like you want it to in every category. Paint it up like stock, but instead of the 307/powerglide put in an ls3/4l65e. Make it a good driver. But for the love of all Chevelles, Paint It. You're not doing the buety of that body justice leaving the paint as is.

Randoom heavy as these things are, it would just spin and crash into something... :P old, steel body cars can't drift, plus not to speak about all the safety issues.
@Serps-ii9zc
@Serps-ii9zc 6 жыл бұрын
André Fontes It's not as heavy as you think it is, a 4 door 69 Malibu's curb weight is less than 3400 lbs. It's not as light as something like a 240 but it's not heavy. There are guys that drift heavier cars than this and do fairly well. As for the saftey, you could gut the interior and add a roll cage and not gain much if any weight.
@acoffeewithsatan
@acoffeewithsatan 6 жыл бұрын
Serps1991 still, even completely stripping the interior and swapping the engine with a more powerful one wouldn't make it a decent drift car, it could work, but not effectively. Regarding safety, rollbars don't suddenly turn any car into a death-proof machine. Just as an example, in a front collision the engine will be pushed into the interior, depending of the gravity of the accident it could smash through the firewall and the dashboard and crush the driver and front passenger. Rollbars usually overlook that since it requires completely removing the dashboard to make room for the reinforcement.
@Serps-ii9zc
@Serps-ii9zc 6 жыл бұрын
André Fontes I never said it would be super effective, just that it could work and has been done and mostly that the car isn't super heavy like every seems to think these old cars are (that was your original argument after all), hell that Chevelle is only about 100 lbs heavier than a 370Z. The GM A-body is body on frame with a fairly beefy for the time perimeter frame, if you combined that with a good roll cage (and I'm going to say that again CAGE) you can make it a reasonably safe car on a track. I've seen plenty of 8 and 10 point cages in these old cars with the factory dash completely in place and intact, a good cage builder can work around it. With the suspension parts available you can make these things into pretty much and kind of street/race car you want and do it fairly well, no it won't be as good as some other cars, but they damn sure can be decent.

Hope the restoration of the car is going well! I love the classic cars from that era, as you say quite rightly, they really do have so much character! I would personally restore it to factory condition. It would be good to keep it original because of the history that it carries. It would be nice to see it in that sort of condition. As cool as an upgrade would be, there’s something nice about keeping it in its original form.

I own a '69 Chevelle Station Wagon 350 that I bought in 1993 and I've been driving it ever since. A great old car and since I live in southern Nevada there's no rust. Kind of a gas hog but on the upside there's so much work I can do myself. Would like to some day have it looking like it just rolled off the showroom floor. Yo 1969!
