In 1982, friends and I drove nine hours from our college (outside Philadelphia) to Stratford and enjoyed performances of _Mary Stuart_, _The Merry Wives of Windsor_, and _The Tempest_. The memory of Mr. Cariou's thrilling performance as Prospero has remained with me all these years.

Since the fifties - an annual pilgrimage to Stratford for the Bard, jazz & avant-garde music, Hiroshima mon Amour, Cyrano..interrupted by over a decade of study, travel and living abroad, to return to Stratford / Shakespeare and once again, beguiled, sideswiped, discombobulated entranced, and moved to tears. Stratford defines our humanity.
