You cannot beat the price to quality ratio especially in California. A double double cheeseburger is 3:45, a Big Mac is nearly 6 dollars and taste alot worse. Every location is designed the exact same, all the locations get their ingredients from the same 1 or 2 distribution facilities, and small menu to be efficient. I’ve been to at least 10 different locations and my experience has been the exact same at every single one, the quality control is top notch.

Mistake #1- opting for the cheeseburger instead of the double-double. The ratio of burger/patty/cheese/sauce/onions/lettuce/tomato in a 2x2 creates a much better “mouth feel” compared to the cheeseburger. Only took me 10 years to figure that out.

Animal style is a MUST! And it’s not necessarily that it’s super top tier, but that it’s a really solid burger for pretty cheap, AND they treat their employees well. My niece works there and almost makes more $/hr than I do!

As a California native I've never understood the hype, for the price it's a serviceable burger but it doesn't have much flavor and I find them to be kinda mushy. I'm from the Bay Area and when I really want a good burger I go to my local spot called Buds Burger. It's an legit old time burger, cooked fresh, good size, on a grill that's been coated in burger fat for literally decades. They season the beef, the buns are buttered and toasted, the fries are fresh cut and double fried, and that's pretty much all they do. It's a greasy hole in the wall that's easy to miss but it's where locals line up every day. My job hours make it so I don't get to eat there regularly but it's the spot to go and I'm sure you all have one too. Try it out and see the difference.

Why do people bring up local spots in these conversations? I’ve got a local spot called Bill’s Burgers where Bill, in his 90s, still flips the patties himself. He makes an amazing burger that’s frequently on best of LA lists. Everyone can find a great local spot but it’s a dumb thing to bring up when the conversation is about restaurants that more than you and your neighborhood have access to. So annoying.

A Double-Double Animal style is very different. Animal style makes the patty mustard grilled, and adds grilled onions and more sauce and removes the salad except pickles. The thing about In-n-Out is knowing your order and getting it made exactly the way you like it. I love a Double-Double, mustard grilled, with all the fresh salad, extra pickles.

I will agree, that In and Out is not the end all be all (and I grew up in San Diego) as there are better. The thing that makes In and Out great is the consistency and the simplicity. You know you are constantly getting the same thing at any location you too. Which cannot be said of Culvers, Carl's Jr, Jack in the Box, etc.

Native Californian here, gonna say a couple of quick things. First not all in n outs are made equal. While most are pretty high quality in terms of taste and freshness some can dip a little. Second In n out is a great burger but its reputation was made in a time when it was common for places like McDonald’s to just have giant bins filled with hamburger under heat lamps while In n out made everything to order which has become more of a standard in fast food. Third definitely get the double double and make sure to try it animal style ( animal style on the fries as well )
