Hello,I am a widow who lives in Alabama,I love your cabin and I am wanting to put in a wood burning stove in my home for my main heat source to save money on heat..I am so glad I found your video showing the board I can use. I was worried about what kind of base I would need on top of my laminate floor to be able to set up the stove. Now I can just put that down. I will have the chimney installed and the pipe going to it. I also like your gardening video. Thank you....regards Maria

With that size cabin and and nice cast iron stove, i betcha it must get up to 90-degrees in there, even during the winter. I utilize both firewood and some bio bricks without going crazy with roaring fires, and i keep my house quite comfortable, and i am lucky my fireplace is "centrally located" for improved convenience and heat distribution. 72-74 degrees in mid-winter for living room and kitchen, 66-68 degrees in bedrooms for better sleeping. 1000 sq ft ranch home. Normally 2.5 cords firewood and 1 TON BioBricks. Keep warm folks.

Thank you. I have wanted a cabin for a long time and it is a long way from perfect construction but I'm pleased with it because I was able to build it all by myself, something I never thought I could do. I usually dread the onset of winter but I'm looking forward to it this year. I have a large property 8.5 acres and I would like to have the cabin further out in the woods in a clearing but it was hard enough carrying all of the materials by hand out to this location.

Love the decor! Especially the windows and doors with the trim & your oil lantern. BioBricks, what a great idea! So much cleaner and easier to store. I just did a quick search on them and it states that a pallet of the bricks is equivalent to a cord of wood. I also read that you should not overpack the stove because of the intense heat and that the bricks will grow in volume slightly as they burn.

Thanks Freida. The only problem with doing it all yourself is you can't blame the mistakes on anyone. LOL From fatwood . com : "Our Fatwood comes from the stumps of a pine related to the longleaf but native to our Central American tree farms. By making use of the stumps, we are reducing overall waste while creating a sustainable and safe byproduct." I guess from what I've read the longleaf pine is almost extinct.

The fat ligher comes from pine tree stumps or trees that fell and rotted, leaving the center core of the tree with concentrated sap. It eventually dries, leaving the wood solidified with the fat of the sap.. The woods behind my home is full of stumps with fat lighter in them. Some say it's from longleaf pine trees, and not sure if that's the kind in my part of the forest, but I have plenty of fat lighter and can easily collect a large pile of it in no time. It's hard to cut too being so solid.

Have been enjoying your videos, you do a good quality job on them. I was on youTube today looking at stoves and fireplaces.... I had built my own out door fireplace where I cook with cast iron, your demo on the rocket stove got my attention first. I have a cast iron chimeria that I took the spark screen out of for a short time....it did go off like a jet engine. In the part of the US I am in, wood stoves are very restricted in design for air quality reasons. The bio bricks sound ideal.

Just found this video. I live in Orange, Texas. Those fire starting sticks, are from the stumps of Short Leaf pine trees. These trees are fast growing, and are used to make lumber, as well as paper products. The high levels of resin, only occur in the stump, as a result of the tree being cut down. These trees, are not native to our area, but we're introduced, because of there fast growing. Thought this little, factoid would be interesting to know. I can go into the woods behind my house, and kick one of these stumps loose. One stump will light fires for a year or more. I was raised up calling it, rich lighter pine.

I'll bet if you split one of those bio-bricks in half with a heavy knife or hatchet, insert a couple little sticks of fat wood in between and light it you'll find it will start right up. Like your cabin. Very cozy. We have a similar pressed wood product here in NS but they smell like pine. They're bonded by the natural sap and sugars in the wood under extreme pressure. Enjoy!

I love fatwood.....can even be used to start a fire when it's wet....we buy our stock of it early in the burning season, becauses it often sold out in my area by mid winter.. I'm going to give the biobricks a try. My quick calculations say it would cost about $300 for the equivalent energy output as a cord of hardwood, so it wouldn't be as economical, but more convenient I would think.

I love your cabin, I am starting to build one in March and although it is going to be a 'traditional' log cabin I am starting off with a small cabin like yours so I can live on site (my sister being around a quarter to half a mile away through the woods so initially I will be using her shower etc, I intend to be fully off grid and using a small (not one of the huge ones) wood stove with a hotplate and a single oven part. Later on I'm going to install a separate back boiler which will be fed from harvested rainwater and if need be from the stream (it comes from a spring higher up the mountain and is very fast running especially with snow melt) which is below where I will be building. I hope to try an ingenious way to make a water wheel out of an upright washing machine that I saw on KZbin, mainly to run a pump but if it works out well enough to supplement the solar panels. I was going to go for a solar/wind hybrid but the big National Grid Windfarm nearby keeps bursting into flames due to the high windspeeds we get in N.E. Scotland. I don't want to be burning the trees down due to my wind turbine self combusting! I wasn't sure if the idea of putting a small cabin would work but having seen yours I'm definitely going to do it. I live in London normally and wasn't looking forward to being under my sister's feet during the whole build or commuting back and fore. The smaller cabin which will be incorporated into the slightly larger log cabin is ideal and gives me extra space for a kitchen perhaps later on. You have a lovely spot there and I am off to see if you have more videos. Best wishes, A.

+Anne Anderson (Foxiepaws) I replied to one of your comments with an Amazon link which google might put in your spam folder so have a look for it. I used solar on my cabin just because it is low maintenance with wind power when you have a problem it is hundreds of feet up in the air.

I just bought the harbor freight version, vogelzang boxwood stove ($160), the problem is they tend to overfire and get way too hot. I fixed that by gluing the top surface with stove cement right out of the box, then added a seal around the door and using the same glass rope to block the open slot beneath the door....just push it in there, then blocked the slots in the hearth plate with a vinyl glove to try and throttle it down. Once I did that the temp dropped from 500 down to 350, I opened the door to look and the fire was going out. Now that its controllable I can't see anything wrong with it.

***** I sleep 6 feet from the stove, its in the bedroom BUT... its in a fireplace. When I was burning logs in the fireplace smoke was a huge problem, unless it was burning good with lots of wood the smoke backed out into the room, theres zero smoke now with just an 8" length of single walled flue pipe up the chimney. Making the stove airtight is safer, I can put the fire out by closing everything down, no fire=no monoixde.

Brilliant! You have everything well sorted there and when you are sitting all snug and warm in a snow srorm I am going to be very jealous. Those wood blocks are produced under immense pressure which ruptures the cell walls in the wood to release lignin which then acts as a glue due to the heat produced by the process. I researched all this when I made the little briquettes because I wanted to see how the big guys did it. Are you left-handed? I noticed the orientation of the knives.

Thank you. I'm using a clear product that I bought that is just labeled lamp oil, hardly any odour. Hopefully not paraffin because the instructions with the lamp said not to use it.

Thanks but the problem is that it is mostly too warm even in winter with the wood stove going. The floor has styrofoam insulation under it and is usually very warm.
