My father always mentioned his mother used to bake beans all night on the back of a cast iron stove. He died in 1958 so it is another memory you have brought back to me.

Love the big bunch of fresh herbs. I have an old pot belly stove I removed from my first house years ago and we use it now in the backyard mainly as an ornamental piece but it could be used for cooking - I should fire it up again! The peas and fried bread looks amazing - well done Dale. :)

Jotul is a fine stove.Had one years back.Cooking surface is great. I planted two sprouted yellow onions last season and got the most amazing flower spikes! Everyone asked me about the exotic flowers.I can appreciate why you built your cabin. It is a Zen like retreat, right in your back garden. Gram taught me to farm cook. When I asked her for the recipe, she said it was in her head and to pay attention. You would enjoy the Lehman's Home Comfort kitchen woodstove cook book. It is an original reproduction 1930 recipe book/no oven temps! It helped me to restore our 1930 kitchen wood stove, as I never saw a Home Comfort in NH before! Our farm has a Glenwood stove. Thanks for the cooking lesson!

***** I was born in 1950 and I remember a lot of houses that still cooked on a wood stove. The island didn't even have electricity until after World War II I think around 1948. I know the house I grew up in was one of the first that was built with electricity already installed.

***** I was born in 1950, and I cooked on a wood stove I was almost 18 years old in 1968. we lived in the country and it's just what my dad did because of the economy. I thought it was common to do this sort of thing and it was just natural for me to do it. I cooked many meals for my family, meaning my mom and dad and brothers and sisters, until I got married and moved away.
@arttrombley73856 жыл бұрын
Dale, I just purchased a woodstove used and am poking around KZbin for installation ideas. I too enjoyed the stories from the people born in the mid to late 1800's when I was a child, the stories about life before electricity and automobiles. One old-timer was a full blooded Indian that watched His parents murdered by Union soldiers. They renamed Him " Fortunate " Frank Dupuis, fortunate to be alive I suppose. He had terrific stories about life back then, so I can definitely relate to You and how You grew up. Thanks for sharing, Your fried dough looked very good. Peace to You always.

Thank you Art. Glad you are doing research before installing your stove my original stove cost around $200 and the installation chimney stove pipe and surround was close to $1500.00 but the one thing not to skimp on is safety. I had many conversations with the old folk and like a lot of people what I regret now is not recording them.

Hello again Dale, I waited and waited for a good deal to come up on a local resale page on Facebook and ended up buying a Mohawk Tempwood 5 stove with pipes for $50, fortunately I'm a very patient person. Very interesting way to cook black eyed peas. I grew up eating them with my Grandmother's homemade "chili sauce" on them. The sauce wasn't very hot but it did have some hot bell peppers in it it's primary ingredient was ripe tomatoes it also had spices vinegar and sugar. She used to can it in quart jars and we put it on any kind of beans. She grew several varieties of beans as well as a large variety of other vegetables. We lived next door to my Grandparents so we had a large family garden. With anything that we could grow in Michigan. We also had strawberries and raspberries. There were gardens in three different places and I think total space was over an acre. My Grandparents had 14 acres total and my Dad had one acre that our house sat on.
@DaleCalderCampobello9 жыл бұрын
grant wright That was very interesting Grant. I'm likely one of the few people here that have ever eaten Black eyed peas. The only dried beans that are eaten around here are for backed beans similar to what I did in this video. My grandmother made them every Friday night. Your Grandmother'a sauce sounds very good.

Gardeninggirl1107 Thank you. Many memories of Julia one of my favourite was here showing how she cooks turkey and it had one of those things in it that is supposed to pop up when the bird is done and she said the first thing you do is this and she grabbed onto it, pulled out and threw it over her shoulder.
@Gardeninggirl11079 жыл бұрын
Ha! ha! That's what made her so much fun. One of the last times I saw her on TV was when she was a "guest" for Emeril on the Food Network (I think) show. The segment was about making the perfect hamburger. All the toppings were already cut and prepared & she was shocked that the toppings didn't include onion. Julia mentioned how could a person have a burger without onions, and just the look on her face was priceless. My mom taped a bunch of Julia's cooking shows from I think the 70's -80's. I need to go look for them and see if my player still works - I hope it does.

I like your stove too and the cooking was good enough to almost smell! Years ago I learned a good trick for getting a cold stove to light more readily. Once you have your fire laid take a twist of about a half sheet of newspaper, light the end and poke it into the stove so it is burning right below the pipe opening. Let it burn a few seconds and then light your fire from the front as usual. The burning newspaper will warm the stove pipe and get the draft going quicker. Have fun. The quail are cute too.
@DaleCalderCampobello9 жыл бұрын

Thanks for your videos Dale. FYI, I just purchased a Jotul Model 118, circa mid-1970s, this past October 2015 as an eBay purchase. I have shopped for this model stove for years, but there hard to come by in the Great Lakes Region. Numerous on the East Coast though. This stove is an original Jotul with original Green Enamel finish. Excellent condition. I have a friend that has a Jotul 118 knock off from Taiwan, but it will burn you out of the cabin by 3am in the morning its so efficient.
@DaleCalderCampobello8 жыл бұрын
+Carl Spence Thank you . Yes that is a beautiful model especially with the colour finish. Too big for my little cabin though. I just spent the first night in the cabin this winter and I'm very impressed with the stove no problem at all keeping it going and it heats the cabin beautifully and the cook surface works wonderfully. With my old stove the surface never got hot enough to cook on. Video should be out Saturday.

Years ago I lived in an old farmhouse that didn't have much insulation so I got a Vermont castings VIGILANT woodstove and had it installed by someone who knew what they were doing. They gave me THE WOODBURNERS ENCYCLOPEDIA and I learned all I needed to know from it. That little woodstove would keep that little old farmhouse warm as toast on a winter night, all night long (8 hours) on 3 hefty pieces of split wood, 16' long, with the damper way down, and still be hot enough to fire up from the coals and cinders that were there in the morning. It had a griddle top and mitten racks and loaded from the front or top and could be used as an airtight ( as I did at night) or as a fireplace with a screen by day (but it used a lot more wood) ~ I'm not trying to sell them and I don't know anyone in the company ... I just know what a wonderful stove it was, and wanted to share that with you, since you mentioned not wanting to sleep in your little cabin at night with a wood fire you had to keep feeding. This might be a bit too warm though. I don't know.
@DaleCalderCampobello8 жыл бұрын

that lil jotul is suppose to be the worlds top selling stove. I love it, I have its grand daddy and it's the bees knees.

Around 5 hours if it is loaded.

Fascinating. I love the pot you're cooking in. I've never thought to use molasses. I'll give it a try the next time I cook beans. Great photos. I'll have to try your fried dough. Our oven uses wood or coal It was a challenge to figure out how to use it properly, having used an electric oven until I came to the UK. Thank you for this video. I've enjoyed every bit of it.
@DaleCalderCampobello9 жыл бұрын
Texan In The UK Thank you. I'm surprised that your oven is wood or coal I would have thought it would be gas now. Is it an AGA by any chance. I've always wanted to use one.
@TexanInTheUK19 жыл бұрын
***** It is a Rayburn which is the same as an AGA. They are both common in the UK. The oil varieties are also common but more expensive to run and gas ones are the least used. The one we have was probably made in the 70's, but are still available from new. (This response is via The Husband as the most I know is how to operate ours.)

I couldn't wait to see your new stove, so I looked them up, BUT I did not know which one you chose, and guess what? I chose the one I liked, and you chose the same one!!! It's fantastic! Also, those shades are perfect too! I love them, and I'm getting those too. I love the light they let come through the glass. Most dim it, or take most of it away, and I will need all the light I can get since this is backup lighting for my beach place. I have some a bit like yours now, but they are frosted too, so they dim the lights too much. Yours are just right. I'm going to check them out right away. That bird photo is Gorgeous! That's like a professional photo, no kidding. You can show photos any time, I love them. The cabin in that color is perfect, it matches the wood on the inside. Love that photo too. Now all you need is one of those small table ice makers to be able to put a bowl of ice in front of that fan, and you will have Air Conditioning for the summer!!! You are so COOL, pun intended. Hugs, Sheila PS I just love cookbooks like that. I read them all the time. I even had to look up some of the measurements, and ingredients they used. The best one was of the Army and how they cooked for everyone. Whole side of beef in pot, how to refresh rancid butter, man, was some of it ever terrible. LOL

Sheila6325 Thank you Sheila I love the little stove. As far as Yotuls go it is the only model I could use in a cabin as small as mine. I really like being able to cook on it and being able to see the fire.
@Sheila63259 жыл бұрын
The cooking, and being able to see the fire is what I loved about it too. There is just something about a fire in the winter. I don't think a wood stove is complete until It has a kettle on it. Mine was cast iron back then, and as huge, and heavy as it was, I never minded hauling it back and forth for water. You made a wonderful choice with that stove, I think it's one of the best I have seen in quite some time, and I have been looking. Oh, and I also love the look of it, it's a beautiful stove, and that's a real plus when you have that kind of quality.

Thanks for the information on the Jøtul stove. I recently purchased a cabin and it came with the same brand of stove. I had no idea they were that valuable. Looking forward to using it once winter comes around.
@DaleCalderCampobello9 жыл бұрын
+jourdanbe They are not cheap but it is one of those times where you get what you paid for. IMO they are the best there is as far as efficient cast iron stoves go. The log stove that I was using would give lots of heat but it wasn't efficient at all if you didn't put more wood in every hour and a half or so it would go out. The little Jøtul stove that I just bought will run 5 to 6 hours on one fill up if you close the damper down. I suppose larger models would burn even longer. What model do you have?
@jourdanbe9 жыл бұрын
+Dale Calder I did a bit of research today and the model that I have is the F100. When winter comes around I will post a review video on it. Looks like it is rated for 600 to 1000 sqft.

Mr . Good looking stove, a friend has the bigger brother to the one you have and is using it to heat his woodshop in the winter. Now for your meal that looks good I'll have to give it a try, only I don't have a woodstove to cook them on. When I was fishing with Dad in Alaska we almost always had a pot of beans or beans and rice simmering on the diesel stove in the pilot house. Many times we had breakfast at 2 in the afternoon because we were on fish. When you are trolling you have to run the gear when the fish are biting it's not like the net fisheries.

I have watched quite a few of your cabin videos and have enjoyed them all with the cooking making me want to try some myself. One thing that might help with your stove is I was taught was to leave the door open a little when first starting a cold stove. Just dont ever walk away from the stove with the door cracked open as it could really take off. Oxygen is your friend when first getting a fire going. Once the fire is lit good just close the door and run it as normal. Outside air temp and humidity make a big difference in lighting off a wood stove. Also there are some good stove temp guages out there I have some from Condar.com that seem to be really accurate. You have a great looking stove and this just my humble advise not criticizing at all. Keep the great videos coming.

Hello Dale. Love your videos. That logwood stove was probably overkill for your small cabin. I have a similar logwood stove in my house (same size, same style, different brand from tractor supply). When I pack it full of wood, it cranks out heat for the whole house. I have found that the damper is hard to adjust (not much in between). With an open damper, it drafts like a tornado, which is good for starting fires. Looks like you got a good, new stove.
@DaleCalderCampobello8 жыл бұрын
+superdavedfw Yes I really like the Jotul stove, very efficient but I can still get the cabin too hot. It is a very small cabin and insulated.

I like that you can cook on this stove. It really does seem to make more sense for you. I loved watching you make that dough. It looked so light and fluffy for a flat type bread. I wanted to take a bite of it. I'm pretty sure that was water in your glass but for a second I thought it was vodka or gin! How about a video update on the quail? I'm sure you are busy so whenever you have a chance it would be nice to see them. Love your videos!
@DaleCalderCampobello9 жыл бұрын
C Foster LOL no just water. The quail are doing fine but still in the coop under the brooder I will do a video when I release them into the cage area in a week or so. They are fully feathered now.
