Is it bad that i like his singing. It fits his style. Its odd as we are used to show stopper belts like phillip quasts(confrontation and stars) or seasons of love or defying gravity. I understand not everyone is gonna take this away from the movie (and the musical) but from a theoretical and cultural point of view the way this musical blends together so many Latin styles and rhythms together while using them to reflect each character's culture in a unique way is absolutely remarkable.
@sungod13843 жыл бұрын
The styles are also leitmotifs. And each person has their own motif. Champagne is vanessa/ love story arc, breathe is ninas and you can hear it sprinkled in. Also the blending of latin styles with rnb just blends nyc. Its quite suprising how well recieved it was especially that broadway is filled with old white ladies and this doesnt seem like old white ladies would be cool with that. If im sure it won like tonys in 2008 and 2009.

Absolutely! Also when the Puerto Rican characters show up you get a lot of salsa/merengue, when the Dominicans show up you get a lot of soca rhythm as well as some salsa, and the Cuban characters get different things but my favorite is when Claudia gets this Guaracha thing during the blackout that kind of shows her culture and age.

I think there’s a lot of points for people who didn’t get some aspects of the movie or musical that strictly have to do with not sharing the Latino experience, for example: Schaf feeling weird about the musical being built around someone winning the lotto. My grandma, mom, and pretty much everyone in my family who all immigrated from Venezuela have bought the lotto tickets every week ever since they arrived here, and it’s something that I can easily say is a shared experience in our community. Writing a musical with that as one of the central events speaks heavily to a fantasy that many of us don’t really think about but is ingrained in our culture.

I think in the movie they sacrificed the breadth of Abuela Claudia and Nina's storylines partially due to runtime and partially to give Anthony Ramos more screentime. But for me, that change really didn't work because not only are you losing some of the show's most moving songs, but Vanessa, even with the added aspiration to be a fashion designer, isn't compelling enough to carry the plot. The scrap of paint rag sewed into a mall tube top is not a believable enough reason for Usnavi to stay in New York as compared to being reminded of the impact a single person can have on their community. I loved the choreography and cinematography in the movie and I'm grateful it exists at all, but the changes they made left the characters underdeveloped and a somewhat thin plot even thinner, unfortunately.

I also dislike how drawn-out and misplaced Abuela's death felt. In the musical she dies after "Carnaval del Barrio" and it's revealed softly and quietly by Benny over Dispatch. Coming straight from one of the most uplifting, joyful, and fun numbers of the entire show right into her death is an emotional gut punch that doesn't have the same weight in the movie. That tragic sense of juxtaposition really struck a chord with me and it's not there in the movie version.
@NameNik2233 жыл бұрын
Yeah, but it's a sticky situation because Benny over Dispatch wouldn't work the same way in the movie. On the Broadway, it seems normal that one character sings alone and says something but in movies, you have to make characters say the lines in the context of a story. It would feel fake if Benny would just randomly announce Abuela's death on the radio

As a theatre kid who loves to pick apart movie musicals, I really enjoyed In the Heights! So many movie musicals feel like they are in a struggle between "movie" and "musical" and are trying to sit at the cinema adults table by downplaying the theatrical aspect of it. It was a breath of fresh air to see a movie musical that was unapologetically a musical and established the typical theatre suspension of disbelief right away. This opened the door for more darling visuals ans scenes (especially "Paciencia Y Fe" which was my favorite song) and created the best Hollywood movie musical probably since Chicago in terms of the musical diegesis.

Yeah but the movie takes place in modern day. If a blackout were to happen it’d be realistic that people would use their phones for light, something that wasn’t feasible in 2008. Plus I get them not wanting to display the whole thing as if a black out is all it takes for the latino community to break out into riots and chaos automatically.

Personally having listened to Blackout a lot, there were a lot of subtle things I liked, like how the pacing was different from the original. Yeah it’s jarring if you’ve liked the original (personally it’s my favorite song in both versions) but like, that’s the point of the song, it’s supposed to be chaotic and the changed structure makes it so it is chaotic even if you were already familiar with the original. And then the whole “taking that interaction between Benny and Nina and giving it to Vanessa and Usnavi” was cool to me because it took me a sec to realize why it was familiar even though it wasn’t in the original.

i relate to nina so much and it killed me that not only did they cut a lot of her stuff out, but the tensions between benny and kevin too. their ending doesn’t feel as earned, you know?
@sofiaescobar44553 жыл бұрын
Yes, I'm upset they cut off her line: "I was working 2 jobs to pay for books I didn't have time to read", to me, it's one of her most impactful lines in the original because it showed how much of a hard worker she is. I'm not a 100% on board to all the changes they made to Nina's storyline for the exact reason you said, her hopeful ending didn't feel as earned as the original, because it lacked the character development the Musical has.

Really upset they cut Enough. It’s such a funny, moving song and I think they lost a key moment in the musical when they did. Maybe they were trying to stress how much of a mother figure Abuela is to Nina, but that doesn’t make sense since they cut out “Everything I Know”, which shows how much of a mother figure she was.

Something that really got me thinking in this movie was in the very first song (In the Heights), Nina’s father, Kevin Rosario gets a $20 lottery ticket. In the original musical, he tries to put down $20 for the lottery, but his wife stops him and makes him only get one ticket. But since she’s dead in the film, no one is there to stop him. This was my subtle way of seeing how the death of his wife affected Mr. Rosario, even if it doesn’t make sense from a stand-alone movie perspective.

I also felt like the only reason their relationship comes off as semi-convincing was due to Corey Hawkins doing so much of the emotional heavy lifting. He’s an incredible talent. I felt a bit bad for Nina’s actress because between the script’s reduction of her character and Corey’s great charisma, she almost faded into the background.

I was upset that Hundreds of Stories was cut because it's my favorite song. The choreography was amazing, the visuals were stunning, and everything was pretty good. I do agree that Abuela Claudia was done dirty. I also didn't care for the actress who played Nina. No offense, but she miss some marks for me. What also bothered me about the changes is that they didn't connect with the lyrics anymore like abuela's bredcrums and a bunch of other details that the people who know the musical will get but are totally loose on the plot of the movie and just make a few passages kinda clunky for people who are seeing this story for the first time

@@rocky4264 I don't think he's literally saying it to present day Vanessa. God that was complicated to describe).
@amypatterson73953 жыл бұрын
@@rocky4264 I’d say the bigger inconsistency for me is Usnavi BUYING A WHOLE ASS PROPERTY IN ANOTHER COUNTRY and then they have the gall to keep “It’ll take most of that cash just to save my ass from financial ruin” from 96,000. Like… how’d you pay for the frickin beachfront property that you’re going to have to invest a ton of money into to restore IF YOU ARE BROKE??? And it makes Abuela giving him the money feel kinda gross too. Like, he already clearly has enough money for that expense at the beginning of the movie, but she still leaves the whole 96k to the one guy in the movie who apparently already has a ton of money just lying around? Not even “A third for you, a third for me, the rest for Sonny?” Just, the stakes are totally shot between them cutting Nina and Abuela’s plots and then getting rid of any real need for the lottery to be a plot point at all. Like, what’s the point of caring about or rooting for Usnavi’s dream of moving back to PR when he’s already got it all planned out within the first few minutes of the movie? He’s not actually working for anything for the whole movie, just biding his time until his flight.
