It is 30 years since Greenlanders have been able to fish from on the sea ice off Ilulissat, but there is enough ice to make it difficult for boats. Today it is -28°C. Boats work together, sometimes making progress metre by metre. Most use long multi-hook lines to fish for the Greenland halibut that abound where the Sermeq Kujalleq ice bergs are grounded on the threshold at the mouth of Kangia, the ice fjord. Large amounts of plankton, crustaceans, and fish are attracted by the nutritious melt water from the glacier ice in Ilulissat Icefjord. The Greenland halibut is the dominant species of fish, but cod, capelins, and Greenlandic sharks are also prevalent around the Icefjord. The multitude of fish and crustaceans attract a rich birdlife. Arctic Sea Smoke appears to rise from the sea as very cold air mixes with a shallow layer of saturated warm air immediately above the warmer water. The surface sea temperature is as warm as -1.5°C. The Arctic Sea Smoke forms for the same reason steam rises from a cup of tea or hot bath: Cold air (-28C) above relatively warm water (-1.5C). The boat journey was organised by WorldofGreenland.com
