Yeah to this day is scary to think about people that western governments train to expertly carry out operations on their behalf, and if it goes bad they get completely abandoned, then years later there is the chance they come back with all the skills their government trained them in with a sinister motivation of revenge. My guess is there are many of them out there.

"In the line of fire" was the first movie where Eastwood turned his tough guy image completely on its head. He showed more depth, was vulnerable, even cried. It was the prelude to his most emotional part, the love story "Bridges of Madison County". He directed and played the lead opposite a radiant Meryl Streep. Together they pulled off one of the most unexpected, romantic and touching movies of the 90ies. It was then advertised as "Clint Eastwood's gift to women". That may sound cheesy, but it's true. Bring your sister and two boxes of tissues. You two will love it.

A must-see with Clint Eastwood is 1979's "Escape From Alcatraz" (based on a real 1962 escape from the notorious prison). This is where "The Shawshank Redemption" got a lot of its ideas.

The crazy thing is that Eastwood didn't start making the spaghetti westerns until he was 34. It blows my mind that Dirty Harry was made when he was in his 40s. The man has had more hits after retirement age than most stars in their entire careers.

@@clydesalley Not in my opinion. This is one of my favourite thrillers of all time, that still holds up perfectly. Where Eagles Dare is a silly old war movie with slow pace and crude stunts, "German" soldiers speaking perfect English. Clint barely does any acting. The only memorable scene is the cable car thing. For a "best war movie ever", try Platoon or Apocalypse Now (or Saving Private Ryan, but she saw it already)

@@shredd5705 There are two types of 'war movies'. There are the serious looks at the conflict like your Saving Private Ryans and Platoon that make us thankful we didn't have to fight. And then there are the popcorn, fantasy war movies like Where Eagles Dare, Guns of Navarone and Dirty Dozen where you can just relax for a couple of hours and enjoy Nazis getting shot. It's no different than Westerns. Two of my favourite Westerns of all time are Clint's Unforgiven and For a Few Dollars More, but they're completely different movies in tone and seriousness.

“That guy”, John Malkovich, hasn’t played that many villains although he does a great job in this one. ConAir is the first one that comes to mind. He’s a villain in Jenifer 8, but it’s an inferior movie I felt was elevated by him. Empire of the Sun is a Spielberg movie with him in it that I think you’d love. And since you’ve seen Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, you might like Being John Malkovich which has an even crazier plot.

This was one of the big, anticipated movies of the summer of 1993, when summer movie season had more of an impact. The trailer was attached to movies for a couple of months. It made over 100 million in theaters, which was a definite hit movie for an R-rated thriller. It was perceived as one of the smarter, more adult thrillers. Clint Eastwood was hot again after "Unforgiven" the year before, as well as Rene Russo after "Lethal Weapon 3," and John Malkovich would become more in demand because of this as well. I don't know how several people are regarding it as "underrated" just because it might not be in memes or have five sequels or something. Maybe it has something to do with so many movies and TV series covering the political thriller realm in the last couple of decades. When this movie came out, the Secret Service methods and tactics still had some mystique.

Great work by Clint Eastwood, John Malkovich - who was nominated for his role - and of course Wolfgang Petersen, who made Das Boot, Air Force One & The Perfect Storm. First of all - thank you for knowing who John Mahoney (Frasier's dad) is!!!. He's been in some great movies in these kinds of "tough guys with hearts of gold" roles. Check him out in Rob Reiner's romantic comedy/political thriller (yes, they do go together in this case) The American President, from 1995. It has an amazing ensemble cast of people you either know, or recognize because they're in everything. Also, one of your countrymen, Michael J. Fox, delivers a performance so good it really is criminal he didn't get a Best Supporting Actor nomination. Second, Eastwood has always looked a little bit on the worn side. It's part of his mystique. Definitely check him out in the Dirty Harry series, especially the original from 1971, and its sequel, Magnum Force, from 1973 - the two strongest entries in the film series. You'll love him. He also did a movie in 2002, very similar to this, called Blood Work. It wasn't as good, but it was better than what critics gave it credit for. It's worth checking out, at least on your time.

Cassie, here’s the perfect movie for you: ‘Sully’. Eastwood directed it - wonderfully - and it stars Tom Hanks. It’s based on the true story of Chesley Sullenberger, the pilot who saved an entire plane full of passengers when it lost engine power. He made a daring and heroic landing in New York’s Hudson River. The movie has a dramatic recreation of the incident, but it’s mainly about the tough questions Sullenberger faced afterwards - from others and from his own self doubt. He was really haunted by these demons, and that’s very hard to show onscreen. But here it’s painfully vivid, thanks to the outstanding work of Hanks and Eastwood.
