The best movie bei Wolfgang Petersen is "Das Boot". One of the best anti-war movies ever made. So probably not for this channel, but maybe for the other one. Definitely worth watching (be sure to watch one of the longer versions, not the theatrical cut).

Great performances. Really nice reaction too Coby. The Secret Service does do other things. In fact theey were initially formed to combat counterfeitting, and I believe they are (or for a long time were) a part of the Treasury Dept. Malkovich is amazing. Don't know if you saw it but he was hysterical in Red. He also was strong in a very small part in the movie Rounders. Coby, don't know if you have seen The Sting with Paul Newman and Robert Redford and so many fine actors, but it is a really entertaining movie too. Stay safe and well!!

While, ironically, their most visible role is the protection and investigation of threats against the safety of the current and former presidents, vice president and their families, as well as candidates/nominees for those positions and their spouses, they also protect foreign heads of state and their families while visiting, plus events designated as in need for special security by the Secretary of Homeland Security. On top of that, they are the enforcement arm of the Department of the Treasury. They investigate activities such as counterfeiting and cybercrime.

This was the very first Clint Eastwood movie I saw on NBC back in 1995. I was 5 years old! John Malkovich was nominated for Best Supporting Actor but didn't win. It was even the first movie trailer to premiere on the Internet in 1993, where it was downloaded 170 times for a week and a half!

Fantastic film. A high quality character driven thriller with an exceptional cast. This was a major blockbuster in summer 1993 and is right up there with my fave Clint movies. So good.

Wolfgang Petersen is originally from Germany. In addition to this 1993 film, he has directed movies as widely varying as Das Boot (1981, in German), The Neverending Story (1984), Air Force One (1997), and The Perfect Storm (2000).

Great reaction to a great movie! Clint is an icon as both an Actor and Director. Of all the oldies, westerns and Dirty Harry stuff are a must see. But one that showcases his Directorial talent is "Sully" about the Miracle on the Hudson, starring Tom Hanks. A true story, which Eastwood handles very well as Director.

Oh, Corby, when you got so upset when Clint took that bullet your reaction really got to me. Well done, glad you had such a good time. :) Like others have said, If Clint's name is attached to a movie, you can be pretty certain it will be good. The Eiger Sanction, is a very enjoyable film, mountaineering espionage thriller, fantastic vertigo inducing photography. And quite a tragic but interesting behind the scenes story. I think Corby would really enjoy it, I'd love to see her reaction to it one day.

Eastwood's character is loosely based on Clint Hill, an agent who was there at the Kennedy assassination and is still alive today. He didn't talk about the events of that day for years until a reporter (now his wife) convinced him to tell his story. He's now written a couple of books about the events of that day. He's had some great conversations with Mike Rowe on the latter's podcast over the last several years, including the last one in November 2023 marking the 60th anniversary of the event.

Wolfgang Petersen was an incredibly underrated director, I always thought, sadly passed away just under a few years ago now. Directed "Das Boot" and "The Perfect Storm", among others. Always thought he should have done more projects but appreciate the legacy he left behind. I'm sure I recall reading somewhere that Petersen thought this was the best screenplay he'd ever read, which I thought was very telling. The script was also passed around Hollywood for about 10 years before it was finally sold for about a million dollars, give or take, depending on where you read. The scene where Eastwood recalls the assassination at night was slightly improvised in a way, according to what I've read, as Petersen asked Rene Russo to hold his hand right at that moment which Eastwood wasn't expecting, and apparently the tears were genuine because of that. Overall, It turned out incredibly well and I think Malkovich is an actor who should be utilized more in a way too, always turns in interesting stuff. I think this was his shining moment as an actor although hopefully, he'll do something else equally as memorable sometime in the future. Great reaction to a film with great atmosphere, performances, and pacing.

5:15 A lot of people don't realize that the USSS was actually originally founded in 1865 to combat counterfeiting. At the time, about a third of US currency in circulation was believed to be counterfeit; Uncle Sam don't play that shit, so a commission was established (signed into law by Lincoln hours before he was assassinated, coincidentally) to figure out what to do to police & suppress counterfeiting. As a result of that commission's findings, the USSS was founded in July of 1865. Presidential Protection Details didn't come along until after William McKinley was assassinated in 1901.

Wolfgang Petersen also directed "Shattered" two years before this movie. That is a terrific suspense thriller starring Tom Berenger and Bob Hoskins. That is definitely something you would like. He also directed "Air Force One" with Harrison Ford in 1997.

Shattered still has the lowest movie profile, highest WTF rug-pull of all time in a Who Done It murder mystery thriller. It's an uneven film that's taken from a thin pot boiler novel with an exceptional million dollar plot twist. The film adaptation's screenplay didn't quite solve the central key creative issue when translating book to screen of this particular big secret reveal the whole story hinges on and reality is the whole 90 minute runtime is running in place delayed gratification because the entire premise is the twist so the whole middle section of the movie is padded and doesn't move the plot forward which even a great director like Wolfgang Peterson can only do so much to keep things interesting, and the film looks stunning and visually breathtaking, but is dull without forward plot propulsion. It's a testament to the power of that twist that it's so Earth shatteringly mind blowing, it stays with you long after you've seen the movie. One shot Inparticular. THEE shot. It's the reveal moment and it's up there with the reveal of Rosebud in Citizen Kane and last image table turn fake out moment to end the original Planet Of The Apes. But, this gangbuster cracker jack of a mind f*ck is unfortunately inside what looks like all these decades later, the best directed and shot Academy Award winning looking 90's cable TV movie of the month on Skinamax.

Lovely reaction! I had no idea this movie was still roaming around as interesting, but I am well pleased. I loved the film when it came out, and rewatching it a few months ago, I found myself still enamored with it. It reminds me of the best parts of The Day of the Jackal (the original), with a new and modern take (not to mention location and background). Not that I like it as much, and it is entirely different, but you might like "Bridges of Madison County", and it is quite a different movie which might show you that he has depth too.

Nice reaction - this film is an interesting dialogue between the idealism of the 60s and the cynicism of the 90s - a number of 90s films showcased weary specialists who've lost their sense of purpose, and fall back on empty professionalism as a shield against nihilism - also see Ronin and Heat - I agree I wish they'd made more of Frank blaming himself for Dylan - Malkovich has that rare Brando quality where he can pull the film's pov towards himself, almost rewriting it - other great roles of his include True West, Dangerous Liaisons, Glass Menagerie, Death of a Salesman, Time Regained - favorite Eastwood films include Bridges of Madison County and Mystic River - favorite Petersen films include Troy and Air Force One

Just FYI: The US Secret Service was a branch of the Treasury Department. In 2003 they became part of Homeland Security. Their prime function is enforcing monetary law (counterfeiting, etc.). In1901 they were assigned the added duty of protecting the President, his family, former presidents, presidential candidates, and other dignitaries.

Great movie, was tempted to put a note up pre show but decided not, but famously the rooftop chase scene was actually filmed in multiple different cities but seamlessly link together. Still a massive Clint fan with a big soft spot for Where Eagles Dare, Clint and Richard Burton what’s not to love

I just finished: "The Final Witness: A Kennedy Secret Service Agent Breaks His Silence After Sixty Years" (2023), by Paul Landis. Agent Landis was on Mrs. Kennedy's security detail for all 1035 days, and before that as a rookie, he guarded the Eisenhower grandchildren. Really interesting insight into the day-to-day routines, training, activities, perks and all the planning that goes into Presidential itinerary. And the first lady's as well.

I have always been surprised that Rene Russo didn't have a bigger career - she is gorgeous, funny and convincing in action roles (for example in the Lethal Weapon movies). She's a great counterpoint to Clint in this and she's also excellent in the modern version of The Thomas Crown Affair (with Pierce Brosnan), a very slick and fun heist movie.

One of my favorite Eastwood movies! Wolfgang Peterson directed this one. I love John Mahoney. Two other movies that he's in that I like are Frantic with Harrison Ford (1988) and The Russia House with Sean Connery, Michelle Pfeiffer and Roy Scheider (1990). Another Clint Eastwood movie I enjoy is the 1971 psychological thriller Play Misty For Me. Great reaction!

Another great (but very different) Dylan McDermott movie is Home for the Holidays (1995). It’s set during Thanksgiving but it’s great anytime of year. The cast is a fantastic ensemble, also having Holly Hunter and Robert Downy Jr. Lots of awkward and twisted humor. And it’s directed by Jodie Foster.

John Malkovich is in a movie called 'Rounders' from 1998 starring Matt Damon that I'm positive you'll enjoy. Malkovich plays another very unique character who's few scenes are the most memorable in the film.

yea great fun thriller / political stuff and rene russo was 34 and Clint 63 as hes 94 now. He certainly looked like a fit older ss agent and just a good re watchable film. WOW Coby was so invested in Clint's character I didnt see the tears coming, One thing is when did he have thought to get a bullet proof vest, but thats a good ending for a great film hero in this one

One cool thing with Malkovich's character that might be unintentional is that in real life there is a subsection of serial killers that are mission oriented. Also Day of the Jackal. The original, not the remake.

If you like this kind of thriller, you might want to check out "No Way Out", starring Kevin Costner and Gene Hackman. It's based on the 1946/1948 novel/film "The Big Clock" and it's a well done roller coaster of a story. Not as great as this, but still worth watching.

Great recommendation! I think Coby would also love DeNiro/Groden and cast in Midnight Run. Coby is unquestionably the best movie reaction in every regard! But You're right about No Way Out. I hadn't read the book and was confused at first. Gorky Park also had me confused in cinema before reading. The films turn a bit quicker than my witt without the depth of text. Good day and health!

This was one of the big hits of the summer of 1993, and yes, making $100 million was a big hit for just about any movie then, especially an adult-oriented crime thriller giving a look at an agency we didn't see in many movies. Now, this kind of thing is in every other TV series. I can't evaluate how some see it as "forgotten" or "obscure" or whatever now to younger people but then, it was heavily marketed and one of the top anticipated movies that summer. Rene Russo was coming off her popular role in "Lethal Weapon 3" the year before and it was Eastwood's first movie after "Unforgiven."
