I was a regular viewer of Def Noodles, and as much as he will accuse me of being a "fake viewer" and "jumping on the bandwagon".. I just never commented but I religiously watched his videos every single day for over the past year. I've stopped this week as I'm so freaking disappointed in his behaviour, turning into a mix of Trisha Paytas and Onision - attention seeking via drama and being so incredibly hypocritical.

Yeah, I kind of stopped watching him maybe 4-8 months ago, I don't recall exactly. I had previously watched him pretty regularly and I sometimes commented. I enjoyed his videos, but he acts like he is some kind of satirical genius. The problem is that being sarcastic is not the only part of creating decent satirical content and Dennis doesn't seem to get that. I had to unsubscribe yesterday because of everything I've seen/read over the last several days. Dennis is just doing these awkward, unhinged rants at this point.

This whole situation reminds me of that thing from Bojack Horseman where he has that habit of asking people if they got the joke right after he told it rather than waiting for a response. There's that one scene in season 01 where Bojack is doing standup and asks if the audience gets the joke after every single joke. People start getting annoyed and making their own jokes back and Bojack starts getting a bit uncomfortable/frustrated making the situation worse for him. Afterwards, he meets Herb who tells him that he doesn't need to constantly ask if people get the joke because he'll be able to tell by their reactions; if it's a good joke, they'll laugh. This whole Def Noodles - "Comedy" thing feels like this exact scene to me and he's not understanding that he doesn't need to ask if people "get the joke".

I've noticed a trend amongst creators who get into these compulsive emotional-reaction downward spirals: they tend to become incapable of seeing their own hypocrisy. Case and point, Def admitting he didn't bother watching Moist's full video, so didn't actually hear his full critique. Then justifying his dismissal of Moist's critique as irrelevant because Most admitted he doesn't watch enough of Def's content to be able to speak on certain points... Ignoring the fact that Moist may have relevant points based on other experience, such as having his own very successful channel and understanding an audience. iNabber's absolutely right: Def needs a vacation; somewhere quiet and peaceful where he can take some plant medicine and reflect.

Dude I've seen KZbin COMMENTS funnier than Def Noodles. If you need to explain the joke, it's not a funny joke. A good comedian will dominate an audience. The jokes will naturally flow into one another. Like I'll never forget hearing Ralphie May the first time OH MY GOD hilarious. When he made the Tsunami joke, and people groaned him, he played with the audience. "I can't believe some of y'all groaned me like I CAUSED THE TSUNAMI. Yeah, I did a cannon ball from 40,000 ft in the middle of the Indian Ocean cause I'm extreme and drink Mountain Dew." turned it around and made everyone laugh. THEN LITERALLY THE NEXT BIT was "Okay so this next joke only one person died. Big improvement right? When the Pope passed away." too funny. AND THEN IT RETURNED IT TO THE TSUNAMI JOKE like it just felt so natural. Incredible. This is just cringe.

After watching your video, I feel like I finally understand Def's "comedy." In his video explanation, he was trying to explain how the apology video was all a joke because the "apology" wasn't a serious apology, but (duh) nobody thought it was a serious apology. He seems to think saying something in a sarcastic tone automatically makes it a joke, so I decided to look up the definition of sarcasm: "the use of words that mean the opposite of what you really want to say, especially in order to insult someone, to show irritation, or to be funny." Technically, yes, he is being sarcastic because he is saying the opposite of what he means, but the way he does it isn't succeeding in being funny; it's just showing his irritation. Sarcasm can definitely be used as a tool in comedy, but saying the opposite of what you mean isn't inherently funny.

Yes! I think you nailed it. Sarcasm can be funny, but it can also simply be a way of conveying that you're resentful, bitter, annoyed, etc., which is exactly what Def Noodles did in this video. Didn't do himself any favors, just showed that his ego is incredibly fragile.

I started following him when he appeared like a year ago and he disappeared from my algorithm lol. He seems like he desperately needs some sleep. He looks extremely stressed from the stuff he's trying to get off the ground. It has to be shitty when you're going through a weird identity crisis and then a channel with millions of viewers calls you cringe. But self awareness escapes so many people since he's made a very good living cringing at other people, and not being able to see he's being weird and coming off creepy. It's not like a funny thing where someone doesn't give a shit, he's being self aware in a way about destroying his career and people thinking he's lame, but not realizing the RESPONSE is key... I was shocked to realize he's 37. Also stop trying to diss Americans like we don't get sarcasm lmaooo you're always dissing us 😂

We Americans get sarcasm, but only sometimes. It’s weird. We’re sassy yet earnest people. And I think we get sarcasm, but how it’s delivered is key. Deadpan stone faced sarcasm without any inflection is the British way, but Americans typically deliver sarcasm with exaggerated tone, expression, or a physical marker like an eyebrow raise, a smile, a goofy face, etc. But the content of the sarcasm is also key. Brits love to downplay things and treat absurd situations as normal when they’re not, Americans like to fake stupidity or obliviousness. Of course, these two arent mutually exclusive! 😗

Dennis criticises Charlie for not being familiar enough with him and for jumping to conclusions (I guess??) but then in the same sentence admits he couldn’t even be bothered to watch Charlie’s whole video and then proceeds to jump to conclusions about Kritical. Dennis is just further proving that he’s a massive hypocrite and is legitimately unable to accept any kind of criticism. The way he reacts to people politely disagreeing with him is extremely immature, and it’s obvious that it is not an intentional satirical choice. He needs to practise his comedy and also learn not to take everything to such a personal degree. I’ve never been a fan of him (was barely aware he existed until recently) so I’m not familiar with him as a person, but everything I’ve seen about his recent downturn just perfectly displays the issues he needs to work on and seems to have needed to work on for a while. (I do not know if this last sentence made any grammatical sense)

Its sad that this has made me reflect on the person I was a few years ago, my friends told me, but I was living in denial, and obviously, the professional victim. I get it. This literally just reminds me of how cringe I was to my friends. It takes a lot of growth to finally break out of the negative spiral downwards, because of denial. At this point I'm trying to convince myself that this is all a weird strategy Def has created. Like he's deliberately sabotaging himself, in order to orchestrate a comeback of some nature. That HAS to be it, right? Like he can't be that dense to think this is a good thing otherwise? If the guy went back to his regular tea/news reporting (in any format he chooses), and just built up his comedy on the side, I'd go re-sub right away. I can't even bear to watch his channel any more, hence coming to videos like this to get a breakdown of his latest rant. It's too cringe over there right now 😬

Def Noodles insisting he's a comedian and unbothered has the same energy as Shane Dawson insisting he's an empath On a more serious note, I do feel kind of bad for his "comedy" bombing so hard but what's less forgivable and much less sympathetic is calling people alt- right for criticizing Ethan Klein and always going out to ride for him (hopefully he's opened his eyes to the fact that Ethan could care less about him) and what's even less sympathetic is his nasty little habit of lying, calling people atrocious things and his weird cult like mentality that if you criticize him/are concerned for him you're being "weird and parasocial and you don't know him" but if you completely validate him and ignore his flaws you're a "ride or die fan and his real ones talk and think like him". I feel like Def legitimately thinks he's some Andy Kaufman level comedian but the thing that made Andy a genius is he understood that no matter how creatively jarring the performance the payoff MUST COME. He once intentionally did a set in a comedy club where he came out with a bongo that he set aside, was timid, on the verge of tears, told bad jokes and bombed horribly, walked off, came back, had a surprisingly convincing emotional breakdown and then turned his dramatic crying into a bongo song. Meanwhile Def just sniffs his own farts, screams about how great they smell and then gets angry when people say it smells like shit, because "that's the joke."

I think you hit the nail on the head with the sarcasm vs comedic sarcasm vs passive aggressiveness. I think the "joke" would've landed if with the music and b/w and everything he just said something like I apologize for wasting your time with my horrible comedy, I will now return to my day job which is what i do best and started irrelevant news like nothing has happened! That would've been peeeerfect. He would've acknowledged he bombed, he wouldn't have gone all crazy so there wouldn't be any more videos about it or his reaction or response and best of all, he would've been able to distance himself from all this back and forth about comedy and his jokes and all of the cringe. You are absolutely right that these are non issues and this is "drama" that never needed to go this far. The sheer ridiculousness of all of this is baffling. If his responses weren't so unhinged I think people eventually would've forgotten about the papa gut situation and he'd be back on top (just like every other controversial creator), however, I think that right now no one is watching his actual content because they're annoyed that he can't let things go and are not getting the content they subscribed for. This is not the good type of ridiculous drama for views, it's the bad kind, the kind that drives people away.
