I feel like Nick complaining about the complexity and the rules is really missing the point, the constant shifting of rules and goals is part of how Nolan makes the entire movie feel like a dream, where nothing stays the same from moment to moment. Nick's point would be fair if Nolan was mostly trying to make a heist film, but that's just the genre through which Nolan is meditating on dreams and dream logic. Concrete rules are not how dreams operate. I can appreciate his point about how much exposition is in the film, but it's there so that you, like the characters, feel like the ground is moving underneath your feet. The rules were this, but now they're this, and a little later on, they'll change again. I don't know that this film achieves what it's going for without the characters needing to constantly reassess what's happening and why.

Nick is filling the classic "film buffs need to shit on Inception" cliche. The reason this phenomenon came about is because Inception was one of the first "heady" films to gain mainstream attention, acclaim, and fame, so, since it was popular, film nerds had to shit all over it. The same response can be seen in Dan Harmon's (creator of Community and co-creator of Rick & Morty) hatred of Inception. It's classic hipster mentality. It's just "the thing" that film buffs have to do to be hip, like musicians hating on pop music (some of which is genuinely good).

@@TheREALJohnL you nailed it. You obviously can't rewatch a movie for the first time but I don't think it's fair to knock a movie that does something brilliant just because you've already seen it do it. That is like saying the Vader reveal isn't great because you already know it

This is an absolute masterpiece of a film, by far my favorite film ever. I don't agree with Nick's opinions about the film after a second viewing since this film is literally made for multiple viewings in order to appreciate this film and understand how deep it is. I would've liked to share my notes about the film over the years I have seen it, containing reasons and clues to if the whole thing was a dream or a reality. Still appreciate you guys' review and opinions, I hope this is #1. It's definitely my #1 on my list.

Michael Caine said every scene he is in is reality. Also no ring in that scene. Also Nolan hired two different actors a younger daughter Claire Geare as the 3year old Phillipa and Taylor Geare as a 5year old Phillipa. Same for the son as Magnus Nolan (yes Christopher Nolan's son) as 20 months old James Cobb and Johnathan Geare as 3 years old James. The clothes these kids wear are similar but not the same as the old memories.

TO ANSWER NICK'S QUESTION ABOUT THE RULES CHANGING (and why exposition was so important because he seemed to have missed a few points): It was explained that the specially concocted sedative provides stability within the dream world and leaves inner ear functionality impaired. Meaning made it possible to go three levels deep without the levels falling apart from events happening in the higher levels (when the van flipped down the inclined but they didn't wake up which was dangerous cuz it was very similar to falling). The doctor also explained when Saito got shot and Eames was gonna shoot him that they were too heavily sedated to be woken up that way. They (Cobb) also explained the way to be woken up from three levels deep using this sedative would be with an extremely powerful kick to penetrate all levels hence the synchronized kicks at each level and that's why the kicks were so elaborate. (falling off a bridge into the water, falling in an elevator shaft, falling from a high level in an exploding building, falling from a high building in limbo). They are synchronized to create one HUGE kick to wake them up from being three levels deep. If they died as Saito did, the sedative is keeping them asleep at the lower levels. So they wouldn't simply wake up. Their minds would be kicked to limbo. The kick was the only way to truly be woken up from 3 levels deep. So the rules didn't change technically. It was the addition of the sedative that just caused that rule to become null and void and what makes Inception so damn hard. Nolan is brilliant.

You're right, except one minor correction: Yusuf said his special sedative left inner ear functionality UNimpaired, so they could be woken up through the "kicks"

I get that Nick thinks it should be simpler, but I feel like it was suppose to be purposefully difficult, and with difficulty comes more words. I for sure liked it how it was, the added difficulty is what gets people to have discussions like the one you, and a whole bunch of us, had. Also, it has to be simple at the start, because you can't do trigonometry without knowing 2+2. You need to have the foundation before you throw everything else on top, before you get the full effect of what Cobb knows and has gone through in his life.

I think they can use the rule of “if you die in a dream you wake up” in any consequent layers from the 1st one right? That’s how they’re able to do the explosions in the 2nd and 3rd layers. The problem was that they had to live in the first layer until the sedative wore off. So when Leo DiCaprio drowned in the first layer he was able to stay in limbo. The problem was that they had to die in the limbo stage (which was the 4th one I think where they are still alive ) in order to finally wake up from that and therefore reach all the top layers. The only problem is that we don’t know if it took decades for Leo to find him or if he actually waited that long (based on the principle that the first layer was a week and subsequent layers were months and years or something like that) to find him and kill him.

I like Prestige a bit more (mainly for the performances and time period), but Inception is a damn good film. I agree with Nick that the exposition is pretty heavy though. The only part that bugs the shit out of me is Arthur alone at the Hotel level. He would've had to wrap everyone up, without gravity, fought off the last guy, dragged them all into the elevator, placed the charges and simulated the kick through the blast in THREE MINUTES! That's impossible. There's just no way.

I personally think this movie Tells a lot, but it also Shows a lot. It's the perfect mix imo. Nick complained about how the beginning is just Leo walking around with Ellen Paige spewing exposition, but for me it's still rewatchable because Ellen Paige's character is constantly changing the world (Flipping the city onto itself, raising the bridge, etc), and it's like we're also experiencing it for the first time.

@simarbeer

For all the negativity around the use of such heavy exposition. That explanation of rules and exposition is the bases for an underlying theme that dreams function as movies with DiCaprio as the director literally dressed like Nolan, Tom Hardy as actor , joseph gordon as producer and so on. So the rules of starting in the middle like movies, the subconscious looking for the dreamer like the audience looking for the proof if this a dream or not and action scenes in dream mirror this homage to the james bond action and movies . So even when they bring your attention to such rules you fail to entirely distinguish between the dream and the reality of these characters and Mal kind of calls it out saying Cob's life is like an action movie which is like a dream. So that's why I feel like the exposition lays not just this sci fi rules but the underlying themes Nolan is playing with.

Obviously super late to comment this but Nick's point of them changing the rules and heightening the stakes half way through the movie seems like such a weird take. He wants them to do the "die in the dream, die in real life" thing. Then the entire movie would have to be different. Why would anyone go on this mission just so Leo can see his kids if the risk is death? You'd have to explain why every single individual character would go on this mission or change the goal to something different. And isn't ramping up stakes in the third act a good thing? So you start to feel the tension as you get towards the finale. If the entire movie had the same stakes, then the stakes aren't as impactful.

The best thing about the movie is the idea itself. Lots of movies have ordinary ideas. The film should not be perfect in every aspect of it but if it succeeds to make you think and try to interpret and criticize; you can say you watched a great film. Sometimes over analyzing films ruins the amusement of watching. You will like the movie everytime you watch it again. Also, the idea of layers is present in cinema itself so you have a movie with many layers each of which is relevant to one dream layer!! 👍🎬🎥

This is THE most Nolan movie. It's pretty much entirely concerned with the premise behind the story and takes great efforts to make tangible and grand spectacles. It makes for an engaging first viewing but loses most of its luster on revisits. I prefer The Prestige over this if only for the more fleshed out characters. They aren't deep or 100% believable, but they do serve as pretty good foils for one another - Jackman and Bale draw you in. There aren't really any interesting relationships or characters in Inception. It's mostly exposition and spinning hallways, but the spinning hallways are pretty dope...

Does the dude on the top right realize that even with all the exposition in the film (which I like) that people were still confused when it was over? Yes, show not tell is a good rule, but this movie is the exception, because it actually needed it. And it made sense in the narrative as well.

What's Up y'all, City of Legends here with a bit of context for my Haiku in Review, So "Life is a Dream" is a play by Pedro Calderon de la Barca about an imprisoned prince, fated to become a tyrant. Because of this prophecy, his father locks him away for his entire life. However, a few years down the line his father wonders if this was a mistake and decides to release his son, who wakes up in the palace and is told that his imprisonment was all just a dream. The prince starts showing some tyrannical tendencies and so is locked up once more and is told, Actually, It Was Your Time As a Prince That Was Just a Dream. This is just a basic explanation for the play, but I thought the name and the dream connection was a good fit for the #HaikuInReview

This movie is 80% exposition and hand holding. Personally have it a 3 behind prestige and memento. Interstellar actually suffers from a lot of the same problems, but I think it's not as on the nose as Inception. Literally TWO characters are just exposition machines in this. Still enjoyed it though 😂

On Nick saying Nolan doesn't direct action well: please go rewatch the first fight between Batman and Bane in TDKR.

Nick seems to be missing the point slightly imo. He keeps saying they should simplify the plot in order to reduce exposition, but the complexity is the whole point of this film. It’s supposed to be a mind bender, not a relaxed action romp or emotional drama. ‘Too much exposition’ is not in itself a valid criticism in general.

This movie has the appearance of depth but really it’s a simple, if not, borderline stoner logic with just a group of high folks saying imagine if we were in a dream within a dream within a dream within a dream etc. This is another Nolan classic of taking an amalgamation of different time theories, Greek metrology, and dream consciousness theories all rolled into this visually stunning movie where people mistake this concoction of utter nonsense as intelligence and genius when in reality it’s none of those things. But it’s true nice to look at 👍🏼

How ironic. Because Andy bringing up the point of people making fun of this movie is definitely true and earned. People are acting like you have to be some sort of genius to understand Inception. The people defending this movie, because they need this to be the smartest movie ever made, are the pretentious ones.

After watching it again for the tenth time and still questioning parts. Pay attention to Cobbs ring finger when he is in reality and a dream. I personally feel it is reality because I wanted Cobb to live a life with his children. After reading a theory about Cobbs ring being on in a dream and off in reality i feel vindicated that it is in fact reality. Though I'll watch it again and STILL question if it is.
