Sator is the first word of a well-known Latin palindrome featuring the five words “SATOR - AREPO - TENET - OPERA - ROTAS”. ... I think this movie brings out the best and worst of Nolan as a director. His commitment to practical effects for action set-pieces is amazing. Unfortunately I found the exposition, sound mixing and lack of heart/character as major drawbacks. For me this is mid-tier Nolan.

STRONGLY disagree with Nick here at 21:50. The final scene between The Protagonist and Neil was so heartbreaking. For the Protagonist, he's just now beginning to become friends with Neil. But Neil has had years of being friends with Thr Protagonist. I think it's such a bittersweet idea that each of them will know how the relationship will end before they meet each other for "the first time". It's not comparable to Attack of the Clones. The fact that we DON'T know the history of their friendship makes it even more heartbreaking.

I loved Tenet and all of Nolan's films, but with Tenet, and even a little bit with Inception, the dialogue gets drowned out by the score and sound effects. The sound really needs better optimization so the audience can understand the dialogue without needing to turn on subtitles. I don't recall if Dunkirk had the issue much.

I didn't get the emotional B plot until the second time, then the idea actually really resonated with me. They don't give the protagonist a name because it is meant to express how distant the nature of the "secret agent" style job he has is. It also, for me, gave context as to why the movie's characters are somewhat emotionally flat- it's because we are following the protagonist and everyone is kept at a distance. I really dug tenet through the lens of "Nolan's bond movie", but I definitely see where it is unappealing, annoying, boring, or pretentious as it comes off to some of my friends and some of the boys :)

However, it’s frustrating to me that Nolan made the choice to make exposition so important in this movie, while simultaneously not giving a crap whether the exposition was coming through clearly in the sound mix. And is it the same yacht in Vietnam as the yacht on the Amalfi Coast? Isn't Vietnam only a week before Italy? And the Stalsk 12 assault and the opera in Kiev are all at the same time as Vietnam yes? So That Yacht only has a week to get all the way to the Suez Canal and then to the Mediterranean Sea. I don't think that's possible, unless it is another yacht, which is completely possible..... But the teeth..... wheres that in the timeline?

Tenet doesn’t resonate with me as much as Inception or Interstellar or Prestige because the main character doesn’t have the same level of heart/motivation for me to care about them. He’s literally a nameless soldier with very little to lose and zero stakes. Also, on the villain side, the bad guy is just pure Bond villain, wants to destroy the world, bad guy. While it was visually and conceptually deep, the characters felt shallow.

Normally when Nick nitpicks I get frustrated, but I gotta agree with him here. This movie doesn't do enough to inform the viewer of what's happening, It's the most pretentious Nolan film to date by far. You shouldn't have to watch a movie twice or explore reddit threads to understand what you're seeing. It was basically just Nolan being an arrogant snob. I was pissed when this movie ended.

People: Nolan has too much exposition!!! Also people: tenet doesn't explain enough! This is ridiculous.

@@JakeTS1992 My problem is that there's so much exposition, the film doesn't give itself any time to convince us why we should care about what's happening. There's no character, no emotion, no chance for the audience to figure things out by themselves. The film itself says "don't think, just feel", but there's nothing to feel anything about. The audience is just there to witness without given permission to care. Don't do all the work for me or I start to wonder why I'm even there.

I've realized what this movie is for me: It's like a really complex "mildly interesting style" gif combined with a massive rube goldberg machine that can be difficult to follow. It's visually interesting and engaging and it's fun to try to follow the marbles in the machine and see how they get to where they're going and loop back again, but it feels like a cold skeleton of a thing. The characters feel barely sketched out caricatures during most of it. I got a little something out of the protagonist and Neil's relationship, but that was about it.

Threading the film into a projector backwards is basically the first special effect. It's not impressive looking after over a century of being used no matter how well executed.

With Nolan films, watch with subtitles and watch at least 2 times.

Saw it at the Regal a week before they shut down. not the best cinematic experience I've ever had (The Dark Knight holds that candle) but one that was worth of seeing in a theatre for sure. pour one out for everyone else.

Might watch it when it streams, never had intention to go to the theater in the current state of the states, bedarn the impassioned directive to see it on the big screen. Happy for those who could see and those who did enjoy and those who didn't get ill after.

Man i loved this movie when i saw it in theaters in august. Its such an amazing theater experience. Saw it a second time and it was even better. Dont try to hard to understand it the first time around. Just try to get the main plot and goal, just enjoy the action and spectacle. And the score my god!
