Support is only slightly diminished and the amount diminished can easily be reversed. There are two current issues: First, Trump and his fanatical following will be discredited and done with in November. Second, Biden has been a weak and timid leader, both for Americans and for the world, and has continually backed down when threatened by Putin. After the election we will have Harris, and hopefully she will be less intimidated by Putin and will let the Ukrainians defend themselves and fight their war.

Francis Fukuyama is very easy to listen to, and for the most part with clear reasoned ideas. But is he not just a little pessimistic about the likely outcome of this war, suggesting a ceasefire with some NATO guarantees? While I would agree that an outright victory in the field is unlikely for Ukraine, the possibility of internal unrest in Russia as the cost in human lives and resources mounts up is quite high, and Putin would be lucky to survive it. What happens afterwards is anyone's guess, but the odds favour an optimistic view of the future.

What would a Ukrainian victory look like? Perhaps South Korea provides the answer. Although the hope of one free and united Korean nation did not come to pass, South Korea did emerge from the Korean War as an independent country with their independence guaranteed by treaty obligation. Although no peace treaty was signed, the 1953 Armistice has held up rather nicely. So, what to do for Ukraine right now? Immediate NATO membership coupled with an immediate ceasefire and the opening of negotiations would be a realistic start. This provides Ukraine with a guarantee of their remaining independent going forward and spares them a demographic apocalypse. This also presents Putin with both a fait accompli and a face saving off ramp to end the war. Even if negotiations were to go nowhere and the world is left with a frozen conflict that is still preferable to an escalating hot war.

The OECD is quoting russian numbers. The inflation rate in Russia is currently at 8%. The interest rate for loans in Russia is at 19%. Russia is currently borrowing money at 16.16% (bonds 2039). Even a credit card offers better conditions. The Russians have currently a severe labor shortage. To attract men signing up as a basic soldier for one year the russian state offers up to $ 60.000. The average anual salary in Russia is about $ 14.000 per year. Adjusted for purchasing power, that would be like the US military paying young soldiers $193,000 in their first year. They will have to offer more and more over time. Russian spending on internal security and defense has increased by 30-40% annually since the beginning of the war. It now accounts for 35% of total Russian government spending. When the warehouses for old Soviet equipment are empty in about two years, this figure could rise. Military spending is part of GDP but it is spending on entirely unproductive assets. Military good need to be stored and repaired and will finally be destroyed. This kind of spending does not provide long term returns (like a school or a road). Russian weapons sales are going to zero. BUT: Until you run out of money you don´t have problems, you just had costs.

From my reading of what he said, he wants Ukraine to be given the support to force Russia into a weak position where they have to come to the negotiating table and give up an amount of land sufficient to persuade Ukraine into an agreement. There's no easy road ahead.

What if I challenge this. “Make Russians feel the pain of war”, but, what if “we are Russian people and we used to suffering, we can withstand everything like our grand parents did!”
@moggadahАй бұрын
This is my conclusion. Even though Russia isn't at an American standard, the standard of living has increased since world war 2, especially in the big cities. Just like in the rest of the modern world, parents aren't really interested in having their children killed in war. There have been polls, the majority don't want a mandatory conscription if it means a possibility of getting killed. So they're relying pn contract soldiers, convicts and whoever they can coax into doing military service. This is the reason Kremlin is pushing the narrative that this is an existential war when it isn't.

Welcome to Propaganda TV! This conflict can only end in one way..sit down with Russia and discuss ways to end the hostilities! Unfortunately Ukraine is falling into a trap..there is no way to win against Russia a nuclear auto sufficient country with a much bigger population! Is unfortunate I agree..but just like Europe is subordinate to US, Ukraine is under the geopolitical sphere of Russia :(
@etoiledenoundiАй бұрын
@walsterd7490: Interesting that those not standing at the battlefront are the ones shouting loudest! If Fukuyama thinks war is so 'great', I wonder why his home country decided not to have a big army for several decades after their section of WW2 ended? Maybe he thinks the World has forgotten that his country carried out some of the gruesome and unnecessary invasions during WW2! If he understood the history of his country, he should be hiding in the cellars of his home, not babbling nonsense here!
